Just out of curiosity- For those of you who work in corporate environments, what is the standard issued PDA within your company? The company that I work for issues Clie SJ22 as the standard PDA.

No standard. Laptops are issued but not PDAs.

Standard here used to be Palm, but has switched to Compaq Pocket PCs which most people seem to despise. No plans to bring back PalmOS -- something to do with syncing with Lotus Notes.(Yes, I know there are alternatives. Some things you can do nothing about.)

My company is a little slow in picking up new technology. Officially, the only supported PDAs are (try not to laugh) the Palm V and the Palm VII...and they've just added the Palm M515!

Wow! Just got the 515 added.

Similar here as mentioned by Sacharissa. Doubt there will be any upgrades in the near future as most of the upper and middle management people rarely use the ones they were issued.

The only handhelds allowed to connect to our systems are the Jornada 56x series and the RIM Blackberry and ONLY if the company issued them. They don't allow personal PDAs to be connected.

Despite the rules, many around here still carry palms of all variety. One of my co-workers is even buying a Treo600.

well i can tell you now the Detroit based Hummer display at the 2003 auto/truck show issued HP 5555's cause every one of those beautiful women had one, and now one even has my number!!!!! (ok ok so its only to recieve stuff about the H1 i tried beaming my information to her and it wouldn't connect, hers found mine but mine didn't find hers.........it sucked, i was gonna be all stylish, and beam it to her (Along with a picture) my "business card" but my clie let me down for the 2nd time, and this time it was important to me, last time it was just to my best friends sister, but this time it was mandatory............and it failed

No standard...2 years ago the company gave every employee a one-time $200 stipend to purchase a PDA. We got to choose what we wanted.

The company just gave every employee $1K to buy a computer + accessories. As long as you bought a tower with the company's processor in it, you could buy whatever you wanted as an accessory with the rest...I bought another PDA!!!

Used to be IBM Workpad and Palm m515, but now it's the Palm Tungsten T.

What companies do you people work for that buy you these things?!?

Our IT department won't allow anything other than Windows 2000 and Office 2000. I lost 2 days work and 2 hours of ITs time trying to restore an Excel file. Emailed it home and fixed it with my copy of XP.

Palms and PPCs are verboten. Despite that, I have my Clie connected and used, and local IT was told to never mention it to corporate.

My company officially supports PocketPC-based PDAs, but I think the number of PalmOS devices far outnumbers them. I think PocketPC was chosen because of relationships our company has with Dell and Microsoft...

Over here, my company sort of supports Palm platforms officially (by making easysync a LAN download to sync with Lotus Notes) but I suspect are moving to PPC bias.
I think a lot of large corporates are a little afraid of PDA technology as info can escape out of the bounds of the home network (ie I sync at work then sync at home, possibly exposing some data).
Certainly my company could do a better job to make my role easier as I travel internationally, I would love to just need to take my PDA overseas to collect work email but alas I need to tug a hefty laptop around with me!
Just my two cents!
cheers
vincent

to me, when working on the road, a laptop should be as small and compact as it can possibly be while maintaining an up to date processor, it seems that companies that have their employees doing work for them don't really care about the size, cause i've seens some BIG computers, but i would never be able to get used to a 15 iinch screen, i like the 12 and under size screens (meaning the over all laptop is much smaller) thats why i stuck with sony, everyone else goes for bigger is better, and that sucks.

My company have no PDA support at all cause we use dump terminal for all users. There's noway to sync ;) for my wife's company anything, and the company buy too... Her co-worker ask for the new iPAQ 97XX i think, and he doesn't even know how to sync!!! Better yet he got the new cell phone and don't even know how to save numbers!!! I wish I can work for my wife's company...

many of us using laptops don't have the eye sight we had when we were 17, Orincarnia

i've been using a laptop every day since i was in 9th grade, does that mean i'm going to go blind when i'm old?

My step dad's been ordering new technology for demo'ing purposes for the company he works for. Thus far they've been able to get a handful of Treo 300's for demo'ing, with an eye on the Treo 600 real soon now. He's also looking heavily into the ultra-portable laptop class.

He really believes the Treo 600 may be the right device for his needs (phone, PIM, and paging all in one), so if he's able to get one to demo, that's likely to be the next thing they roll out to some of their employees.

17''?! how do you carry it?!, it will never fit into my back pakc that i like to use, and it would never fit in my computer backpack, how do you carry it?, i like the 12 inch cause it doesn't have the plank space on the keyboard side.

hmmm motorola let me down the first time, have they gotten better? whats the phone look like? i mean when i was 10 motorola was the shiznit of electronics, but when i turned 13 i wasn't happy with my dream cell phone, how about you? i'm looking yours up right now, i'm curious i havent looked into morotola in a while

ok that phone is impressive, 150 bucks outside my allowed cost for a phone, but i like it, my first phone was black and it was from t-mobile before i t was t-mobile, back when it was voice stream

i'm 6'4" so the 17" laptop isn't really that big. i carry it in my shoulder bag. you should see the looks i get on the planes.

the motorola phone may not be the greatest, but it is a flip phone w/ color screen and tri-mode. i travel to too many areas with poor or no digital service, so analog is essential.

by this time next year i will probably have all new stuff once sony and apple put bluetooth in their products.

well thas a given, every year is like a limit to old products, gotta love that engineered to break concept, if they didn't have tht you'd never buy anything else..........next year i'll have some other stuff too, and it'll be integrated into my scion (which i actually don't have just yet i have to waut for my drivers liscence to get here first) CANT' WAIT, the samsung A600 is going to be mine if sony doesn't release a folder phone to sprint

I really envy those who are given hardware allowances- everything I get needs to be approved by management. I have a NR70V so I don't really use the standard issued SJ22. Actually, that was my old company...the new company that I work for only issues pocket PCs for obvious reasons. I have to be careful when pulling out my clie at work as I am behind enemy lines :D

No official support for PDAs, but no prohibitions on them either. I recommended purchase of all PDAs that are company owned, but that was primarily for testing e-book production and some light development work. Palm IIIc, Tungsten T, Sony Clie T-665, and Toshiba something or other. The PDA developer droid has a Dell Axiom of his own.

The Axiom is a brick...it's a good thing Dell also sells Clies & Palms!

So far we have no restrictions on PDAs, but that may change now that they all come with some kind of camera. Too many people are playing "candid cell phone" so our security is trying to crack down on that little game.
