View Full Version : MSImport Windows XP needs drivers?

Okay, so I don't have Windows XP, so I don't know much about it, except that for most USB stuff, you can just plug it in and go, no drivers needed. At school, their computers all have WindowsXP. When I plugged my digital camera (HP 315) into one of the computers, it worked great.

However, I then wanted to try my Clie, so that I could use my 128MB memory stick to transfer files too and from home. I plugged it in, started up MSImport and expected to see a new drive under My Computer like my camera did. Instead, I got a message saying that only the administrator can install this device. Not the exact words, but basically something asking for the administrator password to install the device. Now, I thought that WindowsXP had a large database of drivers? Also, I saw in this thread: http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9522&highlight=msimport+driver that WindowsXP doesn't need a driver install as written by DanT:
My other PC running with XP does not need MSExport at all. Apparently MS driver is already loaded in XP.

What's going on? Now, I don't know much about Windows XP, but my only guesses could be that:
A) For a strange reason, my school's computers don't have the Sony PEG mass storage drivers
B) The administrator has only allowed hardware such as cameras and memory keychains to be used by regular users.
C) It just doesn't like me.

I'd assume that most people here are using Windows XP, so could someone shed some light onto this situation? I'm still using Windows 98 lol.

Thanks

I`ve always needed the drivers from the install CD to run data import with any windows (win98/me/xp).
They are in (at least on my CD) the drivers\scsi folder.

How ever, it also sounds like your admin has also disabled adding new hardware/drives/drivers. That means you will need permission of your admin to install it. Though if the admin allows keychain memsticks they probally will allow you to do this.

Hmm, thanks for the info.. that's too bad... I guess I'll either ask the admin, or, I may look into getting a keychain drive, or perhaps that Lexar JumpDrive Trio for the memory stick...

Thanks again.

It's actually a WinXP security measure. WinXP utilizes users in that in order to actually get into Windows you must log in as a user. The "Administrator," which is the default top-level user, has full access and control rights to the entire system. When you're using the PC you're probably logged in as a limited user with very few system rights. Just have the Admin install your Clie and set the access level for all users.

If the message you are getting is just an "access denied" one . try this. copy the folder called msexport from the cd to your desktop, open that folder and there is a setup file there .try to install that way.

I actually haven't tried to install anything yet... All I did was plugged in my Clie and started MSImport. I believe that when you plug in a new removable storage device in Windows XP, a little dialog bubble will appear near the system tray informing you what it is and that it's installing the drivers or something (at least that was my experience with my digital camera with the same computers.) However, with my Clie, the bubble appeared, as well as a dialog asking for the admin password. I don't recall anything saying access denied. I don't have access to the computers until tomorrow, but next time, I'll bring along my Clie CD to try what you suggested. If that doesn't work, I may send an email to the admin asking him about Bluecatz's method, although, will he have to install the drivers himself for every computer that I want to use? Cause, then it'd be kind of a lot of work just for one person using one piece of hardware only once in a while...lol

Also, my local BestBuy had 128MB memory keychains at half price and I got a rain check. Perhaps I'll go that route, as I only have 1 memory stick anyways (most of which is already used for my Clie's programs).

Thanks again for your replies
