View Full Version : UX50 to wired LAN
Let's say I'm staying in a hotel which offers wired high speed Internet access and I did not bring a PC. Can I connect the UX50 to the hotel's LAN? I think I would need a LAN adapter which would connect to the network via RJ45 cable, and then to the Clie via USB, infrared, Bluetooth or WiFi. I suppose a wireless broadband router would work, provided it could be configured using only NetFront, but I may as well take a notebook as carry something that size.

No way I'm aware of to do this, but carrying around routers is probably more trouble than it's worth. A better option would be just to get a Bluetooth enabled phone to surf anywhere you want. It is obviously slower, but better than nothing:)

Greg
I found a device called "EthIR LAN ™ ESB101" which seems designed to do exactly what I have described, using infrared...
"The single port EthIR LAN is a small standalone device that allows users of Palm, Windows CE, Psion, notebooks and other internet appliances to connect to the network using the infrared port built in to their appliances. The EthIR LAN is fully supported by the native OS and is capable of working in both DHCP and non-DHCP environments. In a DHCP environment , the single port is a true plug-n-play system as it automatically acquires two IP addresses from the server and once acquired is ready to provide network access. In a non-DHCP environment, the user or network adminsitrator can assign the single port the IP addresses."

This isn't a new device, has anyone used one?

Looks like something I would be interested in, but ....... NOT FOR $270!
Since there are USB-Ethernet adapters for computers, what are the chances one will be made for the UX-50? That would be ideal.

How about this access point:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10281190&loc=&rp=true&rpcc=CSPPR&PageFormat=7
It's small (4.3 in x 5.4 in x 1.1 in).
At $105, it's more expensive than the cheapest ones, but both cheaper and much faster than the $270 EthIR.
The bad news is, looks like it's been discontinued so you may have to hunt around for one. Buy.com says "1-2 weeks", but you never know on discontinued products.

Agreed. Here's a substantially similar device that is under $100, and reasonably compact: 0.9 in x 3.5 in x 3.5 in.

See unflattering review of the SMC EZ connect here...

Another possibility is the Belkin Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server (Part # F8T030). It's 4.7 in x 5 in x 1.75, but the website says it weighs only 5 ounces <sceptical>. No doubt the AC adapter is not included in this figure.
It lists for $170, which seems to be a low price for a Bluetooth access point even though many WiFi products are less. Moreover, Belkin offers refurbished units for $85.

Pickup a cheap WAP and plug it into the Ethernet jack supplied in the hotel room. This is the method I've used for many months now to get Internet access while traveling.
CompUSA commonly has SMC WAP's for <30 dollars. You need to watch for the sales but it does happen fairly often.
I own two SMC WAP's. One of them is a cable/dsl router with WAP and it doesn't work great (drops out about once every 8 hours of use and needs to be reset), many other people have also reported problems with the model I have (sorry, I don't have the model number handy but I know it has AWBR in the model number).
The other one I own is only a WAP and works great, has good range and has serviced me well. It is also very small and portable making it easy to fit into my bag when I travel around. Here is a link to a picture of one similar to mine on SMC's website (mine is an older 802.11b version):

Right now at CompUSA they have an unadvertised special on a netgear 802.11b wireless/router for right around $30. Here is a link to CompUSA's ad on their website:

As long as you are the type who can handle mailing in rebates it's a great deal.

Dennis,
Thanks for the extra review. The one I'd read is here:

Really, the only thing I'd remembered about it is the "small enough to fit in a shirt pocket" comment.

Im confused. Usually at hotels the login process isnt exactly standardised, its more similar to logging on to t-mobile at starbucks. How is the WAP able to log in? Can someone clarify? With so many varying login methods at hotels, is this REALLY an option?

Every hotel I've stayed in has been the same - access a web site and you are redirected to their web page offering you the opportunity to buy the day's internet service. You connect to the WAP and, assuming your web browser (ie, Netfront) will work right with it, you should still get the same "buy" page that you would get if you are wired. If using a WAP router, the hotel's DHCP server will provide IP info to the router the same as if you were wired directly with a laptop.

Wow if that works for me that would REALLY help. I will be testing this in China *very* soon :) Thanks for the tip!

What I really want is something akin to the original post - a mini-usb to ethernet adapter to just plug in directly to my office LAN. Something like this, but compatible with my ux50 and the Palm OS:

I bought just what u r looking for, used it for 4 days in a hotel last week, no CDs required, just plug it in any network, and your UX will find it, it is the size of a deck of cards, paid about $60 only, I now use it @ home to boost the range of my signal, it DOES work, and well worth the money, no need to carry a laptop, see this thread http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48266
