Do you mean from the Clie keyboard and not graffiti? ('cause I know the graffiti).

Pardon my ignorance, but I need more instruction for this to work. I've tried keying an e then holding down alt and keying 0233, and all sorts of combinations of not holding it down, not keying the e, .... etc. Nothing works for me. I've always just switched over to my Spanish keyboard when I needed these characters.

You need to use the digits on the numberpad.

Me, I use the "auto-expand" feature of As-U-Type. I use ,cl, for Clié and ,ml, for Montreál.

You have to just hold down the Alt key first, and keep holding it while entering 0233 from the keypad (the top numbers keys will not work) then let all the keys go. Don't type an e. 233 "is" the number for this [ é ]

thanks Jackson and GalleyR. My problem was that I was using the number row instead of the number keypad.

btw, does anyone know the keystroke shortcut for the degree symbol - º , as in 32ºF? that's another item that comes up frequently for me and I've always had to switch to the Spanish keyboard (it's the equivalent in Spanish for -st,-nd, -rd - ordinal numbering)

alt-0176

FYI, I keep a little list taped to my monitor...which looks like this:

0150 - En dash –
0151 - Em dash —
0149 - Bullet •
0169 - Copyright ©
0174 - Registered ®
0153 - Trademark ™
0176 - Degree °
0188 - One-fourth ¼
0189 - One-half ½
0190 - Three-fourths ¾

As a writer, I use these a lot (but can't remember them always!). Spend a little time with CharacterMap in Windows and create a short list of symbols you might frequently use and tape it to your monitor. Comes in handy at times...
