View Full Version : Can't recover with hard reset

I know this thread is going to generate a lot of questions about what software I have installed and an infinite amount of questions about device configurations and the like, so I'll try to provide as much of that up front as I can...

Device: Clie NX-70V

Pertinent Software: Jackflash (only thing remaining after hard reset is stuff moved into flash)

Problem: My device just locked up (for no apparent reason) and I had to hard reset to recover. I do an MS Backup about every other day, so no big worries about data loss. After the hard reset though, the device would not come back. It *flies* through the intro splash stuff with the SONY logo and the little spheres (under 1 second as opposed to the normal 3-5 seconds) and then apparently the digitizer stops working. It gets to the screen where it says to "tap anywhere to continue" and won't let me move. The device is not locked as it still recognizes when I insert or remove the MS from this screen, but further resets just get me to the same point. A soft reset from here takes me to the configure the digitizer screen, but still doesn't recognize any screen taps. No hard buttons work at this point other than power on/off. I have all my data on MS and in Flash memory, but have no way to access it.

Any suggestions?

This happened to me, I have no idea the cause, but after enough hard resets it finally let me through.

I read somplace that you can do a 'harder than normal' reset by doing three rapid hard resets in a row (do it at the splash screen) and after the third time it'll beep to indicate it's understood what you're after. No clue what this does that a regular hard reset doesn't do but it might help (or completly wreck your clie for good. Whatever...)

Have to ask: are you truly doing a hard reset?

Good luck!

Oh, JackFlash... What have you got moved to flash ram? I can't think of anything that could mess you up as like Larry says, it looks at flash ram last for drivers et al, but it's worth thinking about...

Yes, I am doing a hard reset. Have not tried to do one several times in succession without delay as suggested by a previous poster. I'll see if that works.

I use Jackflash for programs that don't need modification (sorry, obviously) such as Datebk5, Icon Manager, etc. As well as some databases that don't get touched either (like the Scrabble dictionary). All of the Flash ram is used (with about 250k remaining), and I have about 3 MB free of RAM.

hold the power button on the front down, then push the reset on the back. A message will appear asking if you want to lush the software. Use the up arrow key at the top of the keyboard to say yes. Before synching the unit erase any 3rd party software that is in the program files\user\backup directory. Delete no data files. If its not ok, do it all again but delete the entire contents of the backup directory. Of course make a backup of the backup directory...That goes without saying.

The problem is caused by the memory manager and would normally register a memorymgr.0,line:3565 ( or similar ) message.
In short...One of your 3rd party apps had a hissy.

Good advice, but not the problem I'm facing. The problem on my device is that the unit will not function AFTER a hard reset and BEFORE reinstalling any third-party software. After resetting, it is in a limbo state of not allowing any digitizer input, which prevents getting past the initialization screen, so restoring any backups can never take place.

Did you ever have any luck in resolving this? My NX70 is having *exactly* the same problem and so far hard-resetting it hasn't solved the problem. Luckily I switched to a TH55 a month ago, but I'd still like my NX70 to work.

If it crashes after a hard reset, it shouldn't be jackflash. Jackflash doesn't reinstall by itself. Have you tried removing the battery, this should be as hard reset as possible.

Also try pressing the up arrow when you reset.

My NX60 just did this last night while using the demo version of NoviiRemote (but I don't think it is related). Anyway, the unit locked up and wouldn't respond or shutoff. Soft resets did no good - - warm resets did no good - - so I performed a hard reset and am now stuck on the digitizer calibration page. I've performed several more hard resets, as well as opening it up and unplugging the battery for 1/2 hour. Still stuck on the digitizer calibration page. Did you find a solution? Does anyone know of a source for replacement digitizers? I visited one site that sells replacement digitizers for Clies, but alas not for the NX. Help!

Seems like something went bad in your clie. Don't know if this might help, try unpluggin the battery overnight.
