A question that may solve my dilemma of whether I will get a UX-50: Is there a file management program that would allow me to transfer files from a PC to my Clie, using my Clie, over the Wi-Fi network?

(I’d love to be able to pull MP3 files from my hard drive over the wireless network, and copy them to my memory stick whenever I want.)

I haven't tried it yet, but there is a stable alpha of a freeware app called SmbMate.

It seems to get good reviews, though I have no idea if it will work on a UX50.

I use it and it works really good, I transfered over 9 megs of info in a few minutes to a desktop. A good interface and easy to use.

SmbMate is a little tricky to set up, but is great once its up and running. I could be mistaken but I think it only communicates with a network ie not a standalone PC.

you need to give it the IP address of the machine that you want to browse the file system. When you do that you can use it like windows explorer. I haven't been able to get it to work with a smb server running on linux though only so far WinXP not sure how older MS operating systems will do, but if anyone knows any tricks for getting to work with linux let me know.

I must admit I would thinnk SMBMate would be your best choice. I have used it many times and found it really easy to use and reliable.

The only issue I do have is that I have not been able to use it on my home network, wireless or otherwise. Probably my fault. Also unsure if it will work on a standalone pc either.

I have found the setting up easy though. Simply provide an IP Address and any nec. username/password combination and away you go.

One thing is, I haven't been able to get SMBmate to see any other hard drives than the 'default' one. So if you want to access a memory stick, CD or external drive, it doesn't seem to work. I tried sharing those drives on the network but still no go.

It's just means that you have never created shared resources entries on you PC yourself. You used predefined (by Bill Gates) shares like C$, D$, ADMIN$ and so on. Create shared resource on any folder - on MS platform it's easy - click on folder object with right mouse button and select "Sharing" in context menu.

P.S. Please visit http://www.smbmate.com to get the latest SmbMate (current 1.0.a.7)

SmbMate seems to work with any SMB platforms, (besides maybe Windows For Workgroups 3.11 - i did not receive any users'feedback about it :)

Thanks for the tip. Now I'm dying to get a UX-50 even more than I was before. I can't wait to try that out.

Will SMBMate run on a T3?

I think it should. The main problem might be a new DynamicInput Area concept which is slightly differs from Sony Silk Area. I tested SmbMate on Palm T3 Simulator, but the truth will come only with testing on real devices, of course. Too early to say yes or no because T3 is a very young model.

I use SMBmate on my ux 50 and it's very slick. I have a wireless LAN at home with 2 desktops, laptop, and my ux.

I would highly recommend this program.

I use SmbMate via BT on a standalone PC at home with my UX50. It's becoming more & more convient for transfering small *.prc files. I'm starting to live without my cables & not even my 6-in-1 Reader/Writer. ;) Only when dealing with large files I guess. :p

I'm not an expert when it comes to network stuff, but must say that this is a pretty cool application. (you just need to assign a valid IP & bingo! )
