I want a program that can track various miscellaneous things I do during the day. Mostly, I'd like something to monitor how many cigarettes I smoke each day, and probably a few other similar things, but basically it should have a simple interface that I can add different types of events to, and then simply click a button or something each time I smoke, et cetera. It should record times and be able to display averages over time and so on. It's a simple thing, but I'm not aware of a program to do it. Anyone know of something than could be easily adapted to this use?

I did a search at Handango for "cigarette" and got three results.
Two may be of use two you, and one is free.

If your needs are very specific and you want more options than a ready-made app offers, you might want to look into a database app instead. That would allow you to customize all the stats you keep, and filter them any way you want. SmartList to Go or HanDBase are the big ones.

None of the above programs do exactly what I'd like. But would I be able to implement something with HanDBase that would allow me to record each event easily - could I set up some front end that would record with one click?

HandBase would allow you to setup something like that. If it just tracks one event, you could set something up with two clicks, new record, then ok. It would almost be a waste of HDB's power. You'd basically have two auto-fields, one for date, one for time. When you inserted a new record, that's all that would be recorded.
SmartList is another DataBase option:

MobileDB is a less sophisticated one:

You can set something like that up in UTS tracking software. It is a pretty nice piece of software.

Universal Tracking System is designed particularly for such kind of tasks.

Take a look at Track - http://www.medcosm.com/track.html
Sound just like what you may be looking for. It has a great feature that plots your progress on a graph.

Take a look at BlueMoon. I use it to track times that I take medication, weight readings, goals scored, etc. There's a stats page that gives you the highest and lowest reading, as well as the average. Alarms and To-Do integration as well.
"BlueMoon let's you keep track of when something occurred last and when it's due again.
Unlike a repeating event on a calendar, BlueMoon events "float" - they are relative to when they last occurred. This makes them great for keeping track of things that happen at some specified interval but that usually don't happen on an exact day. You may want to remember to call a distant relative every couple of months, but you don't call on an exact date for instance."

Try "KevCount". It's freeware if I remember correctly. I think I found it on Freeware.com.
Six definable counters that you just click on to increment the total. Clear any time.
It MAY not work on an OS5 platform, but you could check it out.

The key difference between the Universal Tracking System and number of plain trackers is an ability to transform the tracked things into other values.
E.g., in your case, Excalibre, the UTS can transparently convert the number of cigarettes into the doses of nicotine and tar.
In UTS you can create several items (according to you favorite brands) under the 'Cigarettes' category and define the nicotine and the tar factors for each item (you can find it on the box). Each time you add a cigarette burned, the UTS calculates the tar and nicotine. Then you can view the total on the chart or in the summarized report.
