View Full Version : Screen Protectors for UX50?

Does anyone know if there are reasonably priced screen protectors available yet for the UX50? I've never been a fan of the $10 protectors (I'm always afraid I'll mess up putting it on and be really annoyed). I had a set of free ones for my T615 that I have been cutting down, but they're not terrific. I remember getting screen protectors back in the day from Concept Kitchen, I believe it was, but I can't find them anymore. I think they were Fellowes Right Writes, maybe. Any ideas?

I guess you mean something that protects the screen, while you're using it? The concept never occured to me, either now or with my previous PDA's. It's something I don't worry about.

Really? I have used screen protectors ever since my Palm IIIx. I don't want the screen to get scratched or people to put their grimy fingers on it.

never found it a problem. i wouldn't want to interfere with the quqlity of the screen, by layoring something overtop it.

Hmmm...normally, those who never found a unprotected screen to be a problem change their minds when their stylus somehow gets roughed up and scratch the screen of their $599 PDA :p I say prevention is better than cure.

I've got mine on order from Sony --- should be here soon. I've asked at CompUSA about it but they said that it could be a MONTH before they get UX50 accessories in stock...

Although I haven't seen one in action, I can't imagine it not interfering with the touch screen/visibility of the display. This to me seems like covering you're new couch or the seats of your new car with clear plastic. Yuck. I could go further with the anologies, but I'd better quit while I'm ahead. LOL

Well, some put safety first. ;) Seriously, screen protectors can vary a lot in terms of their quality. I think good ones can actually improve the feel of the screen.
Boxwaves are going to be available on Oct 10l if you buy a 3 pack it's about $10 per. Sure, it's expensive, but I think they make great screen protectors.

I've never used them before, but considering how often I end up touching the screen with my fingernail because I'm using the keyboard and don't want to whip out the stylus, I think I might get a couple.
On a side note: I'm annoyed that there are so many good shortcuts on the keyboard. Which is to say, I'm annoyed that it's a 95% solution that just doesn't make it to 100%. I can use keyboard shortcuts for almost anything, but the things that there aren't shortcuts for are really annoying, i.e. moving between menu items, "Yes" and "No" options, SMS "New" and "Send" options, and 50% of all "Done" options. I hope someone can come up with a hack for this.

Been a PDA user for about 10 years now, and I've never needed a screen protector....until now :(
My UX got about a half-inch long scratch extending from the left side of the screen towards the middle. Have no idea how it happened...at first, I thought it was a cat hair. Oh, how I iwsh it was a cat hair.
My biggest problem with protectors is that I am a total klutz when it comes to installing.
Last time I tried (one PDA ago), I went through an entire 3-pack without getting a single one on correctly (Fellowes for the Tungsten| T).
Any general tips?

I am using a Pocket PC WriteSHIELD cut down to fit the UX50 screen. Since it doesn't use "stickiness" to attach, if you put it on poorly, you can just pull it back off and do it again until your satisfied. Plus, they can be removed and cleaned then reused. The one I'm using now is from my Toshiba e740 originally. Then I trimmed it and used it on my Samsung I330, then trimmed it again for the UX50. Still looks like new after cleaning it too!

I just checked and the link isn't working. Don't know if they've closed shop or what, but that's where I got mine.

Bar none the Martin Fields Overlay Plus screen protector is the best one to buy. Its expensive (import) but worth it. It doesn't take away from any of the clearity at all and feels great with the stylus. I own one for my P800.

Also IMHO screen protectors are a must unless you consider your PDA disposible or your not picky about liveing with scratches on your screen.
Dust is always raining on things, its never ending. Sliding the stylus around in a pile of dust makes scratches. They start out small but eventually multiply. Besides screen protectors will maintain the screen for resell value as well.

I would recommend waiting for WriteShield (www.pocketpctechs.com) to offer a version. I used one since the beginning of the year on my previous PDA and it is very nice - low friction and long lasting.

bobbys,
I have never had a problem putting on these screen protectors. I sold my NX80V to a guy and he couldn't tell that it even had a screen protector on it! All I say is get in a clean room, where you have a desk available. I blow off the dust from the surrounding area with those 'air in a can' deals. Then I get out my lint-free cloth and clean the screen very well then use the air can to blow off any new dust that might have landed on the screen. Then I quickly peel off the backing a use my fingertips to place the screen protector on the screen, while useing a credit card to work the bubbles out while it's laying down. It takes me maybe 10-15 mins to apply, but it is sure well worth the effort when I don't get any lint under it and it's as clear as day!
Hey, if you want, send me your CLIE overnight, I'll apply the protector for you and send back overnight.
Let me know.

Hy felows..
Well, as everybody else here, i jsut came to express my humble opinion. As the owner of 3 handhelds.. and the newer one beign a UX-50, i must say that screen protectors ARE a USEFULL gadget and you must have it.. it doesnŽt decrease your screen brightness or anything else more than youŽll be dissapointed if you find out that your PDA screen has a pattern like Tic Tac Toe after you lend it to your girlfriend and discover that sheŽs become addicted to Bejeweled!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUY SCREEN PROTECTORS!!! AND ONLY AFTER THAT!! INSTALL BEJEWELED!! NEVER BEFORE!!!
jsut my 2c.

I'm using a cut down protector for an iPaq. The G2's are crystal clear, really tough, and non adhesive. I've been using the same one on my iPaq for about 8 months. You can read the review at the-gadgeteer.com.

Even though I know that after 10 years of using screen protectors on dozens (yes dozens) of PDAs over the years, I'm beginning to wonder whether I'll continue to use them. While they protect they also reduce the clarity and crispness of the screens they protect (some more than others - depends on the PDA and the protector). In the end I end up selling a PDA with a perfect screen to someone who only wants to pay a fraction of what I initially paid. Up to that point I've used a PDA with reduced brightness and crispness.
Lately my Genio 550 and Casio PA2400 have lost their screen protectors. I'm still debating whether my Newton and 70V will lose theirs as well. If I get a UX I'm gonna have to think about it.

Are the Sony ones any good? What kind of texture is it? I can't find the ones designed for UX50, can i buy one for the NX's and cut it down?

I made a protector using a NX70V from Brando for my UX. First I make a tempplate from say, a business card. Then I do the cutting to size with paper cutter. Then clean the UX screen with lens cloth of good quality and attach the protector on the UX. It looks as if it were original. When taking off the protector use a piece of scotch tape on a corner and pull upwards. You pay hard earned money for these PDA's so might as well take care of your Clie.

I have just been using the rest of a pack of Write Rights I had for my NZ, First I slice them up with an X-Acto knife and a metal ruler though. LOL
I don't like to use Write Rights because it can be frustrating as hell to install. I've managed to get this one on without a single speck or bubble edge to edge and it'll stay till I can get some boxwaves.

Let me repeat the trick i wrote in another forum:
Cover the screen with a thin layer of fluid lens cleaner.
Place the screen protector on the screen. It will to stick immediately because of the fluid - which also prevent air bubbles from forming.
Use a piece of cardboard to squeeze the protector, pressing the fluid towards the edges. Dry if needed with a clean cloth.
You will have a near perfect application.

Michael,
Will this liquid not get under the screen and mess it up? i am leary about using a liquid of any sort directly on the screen for fear it will get behind the screen and ruin it. If this works as you say so, it will be the perfect application method. Also, what kind of fluid do you use?

Calculon,
I see the screen protector being as necessary as car washes to keep your car looking nice. In a few years, you'll also end up getting rid of your car for also a fraction of what you paid, but if you keep it in better condition, you'll sell it easier and might be able to get a better price than if the screen is all scratched up. There is a market for used PDAs, but I am sure the people that buy them will want to buy something that looks as new as possible.

I use a small amount of camera lens cleaner.
Just a drop, spreading it evenly over the screen.

Use the 800 number. The UX50 Brando isn't on their site yet but they are in stock. I installed mine Friday afternoon. Can't even tell it's there and I haven't had to adjust my backlight.
It's worth 9.99.
....I just checked the website, they have updated and are there now

KeyQuick can take care of this problem. It's available at http://www.jade.dti.ne.jp/~imazeki/palm/KEYq/index-e.html
Unfortunately, the English docs are really difficult to read. I installed the package, then spent about 2 hours going through the docs, making my own notes in another window, while I followed along and experimented on the UX50. A significant investment, but I believe it was worthwhile.
Good luck,

Update of the Martin Fields link from before. I don't know why it's cheaper on a page thats a division of the one I posted from before but it is... So no reason not to buy the best now.

I stumbled onto this one checking out a Zire71 case for my wife. I'm attracted to it because it reminds me of the NuShield ones I used to use on my Prism. I much prefer the non-adhesive kinds to the bubble-prone, never get on straight, usually peel-up-too-quickly adhesive varieties...
Anyone heard of JavoEdge (http://www.javoedge.com/simtrix/productMtce/productDetail.do?state=init&productId=57&productRef=PSCR-00140-00&category=SCREEN_PROTECTORS) ? Or tried their screen protector?
The sony version does not look great. Already showing wear
Of course if you look at the installation instructions it looks very adhesive-like... Nushields were just a plastic sheet that was slipped under the screen frame. Yet they say "No adhesive"
I just saw some for the UX50 at BestBuy this weekend, I think it was the Fellowes brand. Anyone know if those are good? how do they adhere?
I don't think I want any that have adhesive.

I tried the sony protector in my NX80, and it scratched in about a week (for me its not worthed), then tried the Brando one, and the results were very good.
Im using a fellowes now in my UX (brando in mail right now), not as good as the brando, but it protects my screen.
I personally dony use any pda without a protector, it really hurts when you scratch the screen.

But my UX50 was still at Sony for repair (took them just shy of a month, but they did get it back to me repaired), so I passed.
She uses the Fellowed on her Zire 71 and loves them. I bought the rather-pricey Sony screen protector for my UX50 and despised it, though part of the problem was buried fuzzies and a very strong adhesive making it impossible to remove intact for cleaning. Also the Sony was milkier. But if perfectly and cleanly installed, I probably would have been fine with it. I'll be trying the Fellowes rsn.

I have tried quite a few different brands and (IMO) Martin Fields Overlays are the best. Very clear and easy to apply. The material is thick enough where bubbles are not a problem.

Any little piece of flexible PVC (like ticket holders) will suck to your screen.
You guys have to use nouse to sort necessity from hype.
You think it's a patented space-aged customised material exclusively for Sony devices....
I wonder about making devices easier to use - how dumb can you get?!
Place is flooded with over-designed under-functional pieces of half-baked trash with re-tooled decade-old innovation at premium introductory prices that target Nike Syndrome rather than practicality, reason or logic.
Consumers are REALLY being dictated to about what technology & innovations we're getting.
Sony ran an ad that depicted mum on the beach with bub. Dad in the office gets to see his kid's first step thanks to camera phone.
Ahh family values. Gee, thanks Sony!
