cuz sony is a tv maker, they don't know how to make software, AND they don't want to open their APIs to independent developers; that's why.

Agree! Maybe the future clie's will be able to perform those function. Or maybe it is 1 og sony's Evil Marketing Scheme by including those function 1 by 1, hence, forcing existing owners to upgrade.

Audio and video streaming gonna appear soon from independant devs ; a soft called "panchat" has been presented many times as an ux50 feature and was installed on the ux devices at the latest sopny show in paris ; this app enables videoconf over wifi and should be available soon.

I second that!
I am seriously thinking about returning my UX because of those things...

Really? I'm dying to see this...
Is there a part on a Computer to enable video conf from one personne on a webcam / computer and a UX or is this just UX to UX?
It would be cool if it was compatible with MSN webcam chat ;)

wow, live conference with the internal camera? Something that is so great to know about, panchat was it? That would then fully utilize the internal WiFi or Bluetooth & make the UX very powerful indeed! :D
that was me up there on the unregistered..... darn cookies... :p
I personally would like to have access to the camera in the Clie remotely (BT or WiFi) from my PC or Mac and use it as a webcam (mobile webcam), I should add to my wishlist (along with portrait mode, BT headset mode and expanded Addressbook fields, which are my top "wishes" right now).
Doing Videoconference from the Clie itself is less important to me, right now, than having a true and useable (i.e. No proxy require) multiple-protocol Instant Message client.

Currently the ClieDeveloper BBS is way behind its goal of 200 requests to get a camera API.
If you are a developer and can make a reasonable case for Sony to publish their camera API, please join the developer forum and tack your request onto this thread:
http://www.cliedeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9
Cliepet: Sony Clie pays ANY attention to these requests? I think formal petitions online coupled with actual, rational, well-written and thought-out and rational e-mails to Sony might work better.

> ...I think formal petitions online coupled with actual, rational, well-written and thought-out and rational e-mails to Sony might work better.
I'm not saying these are bad, but they aren't the same as this current opportunity.
The problem with sending emails into the generic Sony 'inbox' is the lack of accountability. Emails (or even well written formal letters) have no guarantee that they will get to people who make decisions. Even when mailed to some mucky-muck at Sony Corp, they probably get shuffled down to someone else or just thrown on the suggestion pile.
Remember much of Sony development is based in Japan. US support or sales&marketing typically has very little say in my experience.
And finally, if emails or public petitions actually work, you may never know it. For example there is great folklore about why Sony finally added CF drivers in the NX73/80. Was it because of customer requests? or other factors?? We honestly don't know.
--------
> Cliepet: Sony Clie pays ANY attention to these requests? ...
In this case, we have a rare opportunity, a real person [a Sony employee responsible for US developer requests and support], has challenged the developer community to come up with 200 developer requests for the CLIE Camera API (no ballot box stuffing please)
If he gets that number, he promised to raise it to their upper management. A real concrete goal, but the first challenge is on us.
Upper management may say no, or take years for something to happen -- but very infrequently will you find someone who will listen at all (at least formally). I don't think we should squander the opportunity.
IMHO: Personally I think the 200 mark is a little high -- but the current interest level is pathetic (only 2 dozen posts, about a dozen votes). With such a low visible demand, why does anyone expect Sony to do anything above and beyond the bare essentials ??
------
So there is a concrete thing people can do to further the open-ness of Sony APIs. Which outcome would you rather have?
Option 1) lack of enough Clie developer demand to get Sony's interest
Option 2) enough demand, but Sony is still thinking about it
Option 3) enough demand, and we actually get something
If the outcome is "Option 1", then we have squandered this rare opportunity and we can only blame ourselves. In that case, all ClieSource BBS members forfeit their right to complain about Sony's lack of openness in the future ;->

I think that that sony guy request is stu*id. The problem is no 'how many devs?' it's 'how many users?'. Even if it's only one dev who makes use of the API, if he makes a good app, he sells lots of it, and CLIE sales jump. no need to have 200 guys around tweaking. That Sony employee is just playing with us. You can't have 200 devs on the Camera API alone. And He*l, if the sony dev support doesn't want to release their apis, they just st*ff them where they usually sit, and I'll go play with another brand. Tapwave released the whole thing, Palm has open APIs even before the devices are out...
I understand the rationale but don't share it.
A much better way to collect signatures might be an online petition engine, which stores e-mails, names and justifications. Much better than a public forum where half the requests are made by anonymous unregistered users (unregistered=anonymous, no matter what name is put in the body).
I'd have to say I'm all for this and would like to point out that I want it too, so you can count it as a vote, but can't help thinking this is wishful thinking unless it's put somewhere a little more formal.
The last paragraph of your rationale actually sounded to me like people who send me chain letters of Good Luck, saying "The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work".
All ClieSource BBS Members should use a more official outlet for their requests, being a ClieSource BBS Member does NOT mean official requests should be made via ClieSource, unless the syadmins decide to put an online petition engine we can use (which I think would be much better, like a polling engine). That'd have more weight.

why do we have to email sony about having a video conferencing they should know that from the very start . my guess is it cannot be done on a clie. will sony bypass that opportunity as one of the main feature of clie. ( cant find question mark on this ux keyboard..huh..) or they are just to stupid, moron, dumb, not to realize it.
sony film should make a sequel to dumb and dumberer. So ill still keep my pocket pc . if pocket pc will come out with a wide screen with built in keyboard a wifi , bluetooth and hires screen that will be a sure winner.
The question mark is in the left of the A, use SHIFT.
And no, videoconferencing tool does not make sense at all. It doesn't make sense for Operating systems yet either.
Until a proper videoconfering standard comes up it doesn't make sense to create yet a new way for videoconferencing. It makes more sense to include an Instant Messenger program into the Clie (which has WAY more use than a VideoConfering tool) and I don't blame them for not including one.
What would they include one for? What should it support? H.323? NetMeeting? iVisit? MSN? Their own new and proprietary standard?

So, because there is no industry standard, you would have them do nothing? It's worth pointing out then that the UX50 is a device that exists not exactly as a result of adhering strictly to industry standards...
Ka-ching: You miss my point.
Creating a new thing that will work by itself doesn't necessarily require standards (although they're a welcome addition/thought) but creating an application expressly designed to interact with others should use some kind of standard or create a new one.
Otherwise it would be like creating a web browser that only works with the "new and improved ClHTML standard" or an instant messenger program that only works with the new instant messaging network by Sony(TM).
There is NO videoconferencing standard right now. The closest there is is H.323 supported by NetMeeting and (not many) others. This is not good enough (the standard is old and antiquated, there is no support for lots of platforms and doesn't behave properly over slow links).
Or it would be as dumb as Apple's iChat AV protocol, probably the best AV protocol out there right now and closed to just mac users.

:D switch! www.apple.com
Mytho: I have a mac. My girlfriend doesn't and can't have one (she has to run a LOT of stuff from her work that only runs on Windows). I'm moving to Spain in two months and we wanted to do some Videoconferencing. I'd love to use iChat, which looks gorgeous but won't be able to, as it doesn't run on anything on the PC. We will be able to use the crappy iVisit (which is a great product and cross-platform, but nowhere as good as iChat) because of this.
Of course, as she can Videoconference with much better quality with her NetMeeting and MSN friends, she blames the worse quality on the mac.

Ok, this thread has rapidly degraded...
Just one point of clarification regarding the cliedeveloper BBS:
> ... Much better than a public forum where half the requests are made by anonymous unregistered users...
This is not an annonymous poll or a chain letter.
The 'poll/vote', albeit informal, is being held on a Sony sponsored BBS (cliedeveloper.com)
You must register with a real name/address/phone number/email to get on that BBS. Registration is FAR much more stringent than ClieSource or any other public BBS I've seen. I don't even think you can read the cliedeveloper BBS if you aren't registered.
http://www.cliedeveloper.com/develop_info/index.html
The 'poll/vote' was requested by someone who's job involves prioritizing such requests. Greater number of votes will help him do his job to help us.
In my mind this gives each vote on the cliedeveloper BBS much more weight than an anonymous poll on ClieSource (or any other public forum). Not to mention we have a promise that someone will act upon the results (if enough interest that is)
-----
Once again, that is not to say that other mechanisms (public polls, emails, snail mails, public griping) are not valid venues to voice your dissatisfaction. Complaining can be fun, but I repeat this is one case where we may actually be able to help ourselves.
I agree this may be wishful thinking that Sony will do *anything* to help us, but this is a good shot at it, and IMHO the best opportunity we have right now.
BTW: one of the reasons that WinCE/PocketPC has evolved so much is because of developers pushing the envelope, despite customers complaints.
