I'm interested in researching the implementation of Afterburner for my SJ-20 (due to a thread under the SL/J board).

In my research I discovered that to use Afterburner you need a program called hackmaster. On the hackmaster page on palmgear.com the comments at the bottom mention problems with their palms freezing up and needing soft reboots every couple days while using Hackmaster.

The posters also mentioned a program called X-Master and promoted it as being more OS friendly and lacking any palm freeze ups, etc.

I have recently decided to try X-Master v1.3 as a replacement to HackMaster v0.91.I am overclocking my PalmVx with Afterburner v3.0w and have not had my Palm Vx crash at all - not once - very stable, very nice. Before with HackMaster v0.91 I would average about one crash every two days (which I could recover from with a simple "soft reset").I have tried EvPlugbase v1.1b1 as a replacement to HackMaster v0.91, but it was too unstable and I had to "soft reset" my machine Palm Vx all the time.In order of stability:Best: X-Master v1.32nd Best: HackMaster v0.91Last: EvPlugbase v1.1b1

So.. to use Afterburner I need either hackmaster or X-master as well.

Any comments on any of these three apps and advice for me and my little SJ-20?

Thanks!

X-MASTER and TEALMASTER are considered the 2 top hack managers these days. I have both and while TEALMASTER has a few more "bells and whistles" it is shareware while X-MASTER has done the same job for me, flawlessly and is free. I have had no problems at all with TEALMASTER either but it tends to display the the hack list a bit more slowly as you add more and more hacks (I usually run about 12-15 hacks. Both very fine products.

I went from HM to TM, when the MemPlug software I was using on my Visor was updated. I needed TM's ability to disable hacks for certain programs when I was running PiBackup II. I still use this feature on my T665. It will be a great feature if you run into a persnickity program when using AB.

I've been using Xmaster for years without ever having a problem.  And it's freeware.

I switched to X-master.

Hack Master was the first and the gold standard for all future hack utilities but it is abandoned software and hasn't been updated in years.

Finncull - you install hacks and hack manager (or "event manager" as they call it these days) by installing them just like any other program.

To run these hacks, you need a hack manager (such as TealMaster and X-Master) and it will intercept calls to these functions and modifies them according to the hack (for example, clearline hack will not show the dotted lines for the fields).

It is preferable that you use TealMaster (shareware at www.tealpoint.com) or X-Master (found at http://linkesoft.com/xmaster/ ) as they are the most stable hack managers around and they have event clash handling, accidental hack deletion whilst active or order of hack activation on restart - which older hack managers (such as Hackmaster, eveplugbase etc) don't handle as well (or not at all).

If you have an OS5 Palm device, TealMaster is the only one that allows a few hacks to run - as long as the hack is OS5 updated (one example is McPhling).

Hope this helps.
