Anyone have any experience going from Palm Desktop to MS Outlook? I have had Palms/Clies for many, many years and have always synchronized with Palm Desktop. Now I am seriously considering going to Outlook. Outlook 2003 has gotten some really strong reviews and I "live" on Outlook 2002 at work.

What would the change over entail?
Whose synchronization software should I use?
Finally, will I still be able to hot sync wirelessly?

Thanks for any input here. :)

I personally use Pocket Mirror to do my synch with outlook. I find it works quite well. I am not a fan of Intellisync that came with the clies so i ported over to Pocket Mirror. Wireless works fine as well.

Do you know how I could migrate all my data over without causing mass confusion? My UX and Palm Desktop are already in sync and fully "loaded." I am always wary of duplicates and messed up categories.

Thanks... :D

If you want to port your data from the palm desktop to outlook I would just install the new synch software for outlook. Since your handheld is a mirror copy of your palm desktop the synch should update outlook with all the info from it. I believe that would be the easiest way.

Thanks poolsharkie69. I e-mailed Chapura and am also waiting to hear their recommendations. MS Outlook 2003 is going to be great and I think it is time for me to move away from Palm Desktop.

As an aside, do you use Beyond Contacts in conjunction with Outlook? I am wondering if they really work well together as advertised.

That is all you have to do.

I personally like Intellisync. I've been using it for years to sync to Outlook. In fact, I sync to Outlook at work, then at home to two additional computers, all running Outlook. No dups; works great.

I don't use Beyond contacts. I do use Agendus for calendar and such. I like how it integrates all my contacts and meetings together. I was a devoted DateBk 5 user for the longest time but when I used ganedus for a bit I really started to like it and found it more versatile. I believe there is a 15 category limit using outlook to ux 50 address book so if you have more than 15 cat's on your outlook you may need to look at a 3rd party app to handle that. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Does Pocket Mirror allow you to sync with more than one desktop?
Thanks...

I assume you can. I checked out there site for you. The PRo Version of Pocket Mirror will allow multiple calendars on the handheld.

That is the link to the support article. If the link does not work just go to their support section and search for multiple desktops under the pocket mirror pro category. I know I synch my UX to my laptop office pc and home pc. They of course all have the same outlook profiles for the most part. Like I said your handheld is the key it stores all the info...so as long as you set up all the desktops or such with the same handheld synch name then it shouldn't be a problem.

There's another thing that I think you could try. You could re-install the Palm software on your PC. When you do, it asks if you want to sync to outlook or Palm desktop. Choose outlook. Then, on your 1st sync, it should write all the stuff from your Palm to outlook on your PC, no?

I agree that it would. But I think he is going to use Pocket Mirror. Doesn't the palm cd have intellisynch on it? I owuld just make sure that in outlook the pcoket mirror folder contains a note....make sure the name on that note is the same for all the pcs u use for synch'ing.

I installed outlook 2002 with intellisync with no problems. I did have to assign my contacts to their category. (I did a first sync with outlook) A little pain but worth the added features on the desk top. I tried beyond contacts and while it can hold far more info than agendus, agendus is far more versitile especially in the field.

Beyond contacts has no plans to creat links between to do's and contact or calls and contact. You have to switch back and forth between phone and address book in beyond contacts to look up the phone number. Not good!

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions guys. I am going to probably give Pkt Mirror a try as it seems more robust than Intelli- Sync. Data Viz told me yesterday that wide screen/landscape support is potentially on the horizon for Beyond Contacts, which would obviously be awesome. As an aside, if anyone is interested, e-mail or call them and ASK for it.

I am also going to do some investigating with Outlook 2003 when it is available. My company uses an Exchange server and Outlook on the desktops, so if I sync with Outlook at home and work I will really be neatly integrated and can even access it by web. Now with color categories and the like, my calendar will somewhat appear like DateBk 5, so that will be cool. We'll see...

Thanks again... great board. :D

Jeff,

Just wanted to let you know I am currently using Outlook 2003 and have been for about 3 months. This is the version that ships with Windows Small Business Server 2003 RC-1. Outlook 2K3 is simply amazing. Great new interface and very versatile. I have had no real problems using pocket mirror with my setup. One thing to watch out for is to make sure that your contacts are not set to Private in outlook. They will not synch over to your PDA in this case. Their is a support article on it...just haven't cjecked it out. ANyhow goo dluck and if you need anything else let me know...this is a great board for info and help

That is what I have heard. Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of M$ and tried the first few iPaq's (PPC) and went back to Palm in a flash, but Outlook is a major program in "my" world and I just never really loved it. The NYTimes gave it a glowing write up a week ago in the Circuits section and now I am begging MIS in my company to buy some licences for it. On M$'s website, it states that you can simply uprage Outlook 2003 and not the other Office components.

Palm Desktop is just plain dull and obviously not at all functional.

A lot of testing and playing to do. Right now I need to get back to work.

Along these lines...

Does anyone make a Calander Manager that will sync the "start" and "due" dates when it comes to "To-Dos". I am using Datbk right now, but I really use this feature alot. Will Intellisync or Pocket Mirror pick up both dates within the one task?

Thanks,

My Agendus program does not pick up the due date or start date. This is a the first time i have looked at this feature. I am wondering if it is function of the synch software or the calendaring program on the hendheld. Hmmmmmm interesting

The handheld does not show a field for start date only due date . At least on my UX50 built in To-Dos. Under the agendus one there is no dates...hmmmm. Pocket mirror will only do one thing with those dates.

The Intellisync software that came with the Clie CD gave me an error message about the pst file when syncing with Outlook 2003. Then I tried PocketMirror, and it worked quite well.
