I've been using my TG50 with 2*128MB memory sticks thus far but currently leave quite a lot of media on my PC. I've decided to get a larger memory stick and am considering a 512MB Memory Stick Pro.

I want to hold my web site files which I develop on the fly using netscape and crsmemo as well as a few video files and lots of MP3. I run a lot and like to have some music and some audio books with me at all times.

However, I am a little confused about a few things I have read, about magic gate, white memory sticks, etc etc. Is there more than one type of memory stick pro? If so what sort do I need?

Also, I have read about Sony patches to allow the use of the memory stick pro. Will I need to install this?

Thanks,

Sid

And even though this says I'ma guest, I'm not. For some reason I can never log in anymore. I enetr my name and password. It says thanks for logging in and then refuses to acknowledge me.....

There is only one kind of MSpro. The "white" and "purple" and "duo" and "white duo" memory sticks are memory sticks, not memory stick pros.

Memory stick pro IS a different media.

You don't need the patch for the TG50.
(even though I installed it and haven't removed it, "orol" has posted quite a bit that it is completely unnecessary and possibly slows it down a very minute amount)

I have a 512MB MemoryStickPro and IT IS SOOOO nice to have plenty of room for mp3s, a full length movie, and all my games and databases with plenty to spare.
Don't let the 512MB number fool you though. Only 468MB are available to use. 468MB = 490,930,176 bytes. I guess that at least 21,069,824 bytes must be used by the system?

The last time I checked, 2 256M sticks were cheaper than 1 512M stick, albeit not as convenient.

As far as I can tell, everything bigger than 128M is a MagicGate, which supports the copy protection providing compatibility for Sony's Atrac3 format. Ironically, you can't use Atrac3 on a stick bigger than 128M!

MP3 files are bigger, but they are much more portable. I've given up on Atrac3.

I haven't had any probs using a 256M stick without the updated driver.

I agree with Jayh - 2 256 MB memory pro sticks (about $80 on sale) are cheaper than a 512 MB stick. I, however, rushed out and paid a premium ($300!) for the 512 MB stick when it first hit the market.

A 512 MB stick is nice because I can load alotta stuff on it - the movie Princess Bride, around 50 mp3s, loads of family and dog pictures, program files, flash files and games, etc. I bought my TG50 in late March (a TG50/U) and installed the patch. It could be that later release TG50s automatically incorporate the patch. Try the memory stick pro without the patch and if all works fine, don't bother since the patch gobbles up memory.

MagicGate is included in memory stick pro sticks of any size, and as far as I know only affect your ability to use Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 files.
