View Full Version : Killing my CLIE today

Today I am killing my N 760. You see, the battery life has been getting shorter lately. I'm going to drain the life from my CLIE and then recharge completely. I know Li batteries aren't supposed to retain memory, but I'm hoping that the complete drain and recharge will help.

It started this morning with YiShow reporting the battery at 66%. Half an hour playing Patience with the front light on full took it down to 48%. I fired up Kinoma and set the little guy looping a video, like a slow morphine drip straight to the processor. After 20 minutes or so, the screen went blank. I thought my CLIE had finally passed--I pressed the power button and got no response. I gave it a soft reset and it gasped into a deadly reset loop. "There, there," I said softly as I gave him a hard reset like an adrenaline shot for a heroine overdose. He came around, but he was groggy. He could no longer play the videos on the memory stick. I switched to Acid Image and sent him into a slideshow loop from which he would likely never recover. A few minutes later, the images stopped coming. I left Acid Image and tried to access other applications on the memory stick. When he whispered "There is not enough battery power for that operation." my heart caught in my throat. He promptly forgot the name of the memory stick he has held so close to his processor for the past year, and simply addressed it as "Card". Shortly after, he wasn't even aware that "Boom Stick" was near.

He's fading fast, now. I've set him looping on the Clie Demo. He keeps turning his front light off and pleading with me to recharge his battery. Poor thing. It won't be long, now...

He's unconscious...

There's still a pulse, when I hold the power button down, the screen flickers. But his pulse is slowing.

I will say a few words:

Dear N760, I hardly knew you, but the brief time we shared together was one of the most organized periods of my life. I want to thank you for that. And I'd like to offer thanks to the creators of MS Backup, for through their miracle working, I WILL see you again. Yes, the four hours may seem like an eternity to me, but, for you, the time will pass quickly. Rest in peace until we meet again.

Thank you, everyone, for your support in our time of crisis. You helped pull me through the small hours of the charging cycle.

The good news is, he's back and, so far, good as new! It actually seems to have helped. I used it for about 30 minutes straight last night, and YiShow is still reporting 100% battery strength this morning. Normally, a good 10 minute round of Patience would bring it down a few notches.

More good news: Even with the battery drained to the point where I could no longer power it up, it reserved enough power to preserve the RAM contents. One alkaline disaster with my old Visor Deluxe is enough to tell me how valuable that is!

So if any of you are experiencing diminished battery power, just commit Cliecide. It might help!

So this does have a happy ending!!!

I wonder if Dr. Clie-vorkian is thinking about this as a new sideline?

Hmm, I personally don't advocate involving a third party. Cliecide is a very personal thing that should only take place between Clie and user. Involving a third party might ease some of the agony you experience at putting your dear friend down, but consider the Clie! Honestly, if you were a Clie, would you want to be killed by your owner, or by some stranger with cold hands and no jog-dial experience to speak of?

btw, my Clie is still humming along at 100%. I have used it as usual during the day, making notes, scheduling appointments and to-dos.... I even played through a couple levels of Insaniquarium! Cliecide really made a big difference in my battery life--just think what it could do for yours! :)

I had to put my future wife's m505 down a few days ago, she was getting really sick and just struggling to keep up with herself... she had a software conflict that just wouldn't go away... She wouldn't even hard reset. In the end I think I did the right thing.. putting her out of her missery. anyways, the good news is, I restored her fully, and now her usb works again... she's as good as new!
