Could Sony possibly release OS updates for all of its CLIEs running PalmOS 4.1? This article at CNET:
CNET article (http://news.com.com/2100-1040-980403.html)
says that Palm has made the Grafitti2 update embedded into PalmOS v4.1.2 and it is avaialable to licensees such as Sony and Kyocera. Even PIC's own article suggests the same thing:

How hard would it be to update the os though, would it just be a program that we download, or would the bios need to be flashed?

Highly doubtful follks, simply because the current SL and SJ models lack any sort of flashable or upgradeable ROM where the OS resides. Your best bet for Graffiti2 would be to get a third party RAM resident program, or a hack.

Gee, thanks for nuthin Sony! Guess I'll take my non-flashable ROM back to the stone age and place it next to the stone tools.. :)
I think that the some of the SL/SJ models are flashable it depends on where they where shipped to. For example i beleive US models dont have flash ROM I belevie mine does have Flash Rom mine is the sl10/E
I read this on the sony website (if i remember correctly) it said that some may not be upgradable

At the rate that Sony releases new models, they don't care to release upgrades to PalmOS the way that Palm does for their product.
So even if your Clie is flash upradeable, highly doubtful you'll get an update.
I think awhile back, Sony did release an upgrade for one of their models but it cost something like $80.

i'm a bit confuse. is the architecture of flashing a new OS to a say SJ30, really different compared to using JackSprat and such?

I used to have a Visor Prism with no flash ROM and I downloaded like 3 OS updates. They just installed into that RAM and you could not deleate them.

We're upgrading from a Palm III to Sony SJ20 and want to make sure that we have all of the data, but I understand from reading a lot of the posts that we cannot simply sync the new SJ20 with the old Hotsync program and then install the Sony software. What should we do? The directions are awful!
Any help would be appreciated.

I believe there are programs available to do that for you. You might want to post this in a separate thread so more people see it. :)

I recently upgraded from a Palm IIIc to a T665. There were a few articles on upgrading. Tanker Bob has a useful one here http://home.cfl.rr.com/rmattes/palmframe.htm and here's another http://www.palmtipsheet.com/html.texts/tipsht31.html#visor-clie.
However, I decided to start fresh since I had all the applications and I could always compare to the Palm. I also used this exercise to clean house so to speak. One thing to be careful of is any PalmOS upgrades or patches you have on your Palm III. They should not be added to your Clie.
The whole exercise went fairly smoothly. I do recommend that before you start adding applications, sync your Palm one last time and make a copy of the backup. Then set up your sync to the new Clie. As you add applications, sync as a backup. I found a couple of applications that caused fatal errors on the Clie and only a hard reset would get rid of them. Having the backup means not starting over. The two apps were a hearts game and Exodus. To be fair, I don't know which caused the problem because I haven't got back to it.
Finally, once things are set, copy over your database backups (ToDo, Memo, etc) as well as any other applications that have their own data and copy to the Clie.
That's what I did. Your mileage may vary. The most important thing is to make copies of your backups so you don't lose any of your original data if something goes wrong.
