How come there isn't any good sound recording / editing software available. Voice recorder is OK, but then you can't do anything with the sound. Can't edit and export to wav or MP3 on the computer. I'd like to have something like Cool Edit Pro with the waveform on a time line. And if possible, multiple tracks. Why hasn't it been done yet ? Maybe because of Sony's proprietary Sound API. If Sony isn't willing to release its secrets, then it should provide us with such an application. It would be a killer app in my opinion.

Am I the only one ?

I think it would be a brilliant idea. I just ordered a nx80v and my only regret is that there is no decent wav editing or a plug-in-power mic input. A Clie with a mic input like those on a minidisc would truly be a beautiful thing.

Well, there doesn't seem to be any WAV editor for the PDA itself, but there are plenty of great WAV editing tools for the PC.

Sorry, but I miss the point of the last 2 posts.
I already have very good wave editing tools on my PC such as Cool Edit or Sound Forge. But that's not the point.
Having a good wordprocessor on your PC doesn't imply that you don't want or need one on your handheld, right ?
Being a journalist, I would love to be able to use my Clié to record interviews, then, do some editing, compress to MP3 and send everything to the newsroom by wifi or using my cell phone.

I think that we're finally getting to the point where audio editing and MP3 compression are doable on a handheld, as the hardware SHOULD be capable of it.

Although I'm not a PocketPC user, there is software available for that platform, so maybe contacting cross-platform developers that already make sound editors for the PPC would be a good approach...

I just took a look on handango and there are at least a couple on the first page.

Just a suggestion. It may be worth firing off an email. I'm pretty sure that most developers would work with the standard sound API however, making it available only for the UX50 (so far). That's just an educated guess based on Sony's (IMHO) stupid sound API policy. :)

Well, as far I know, you can't any audio editing on the PDA. So, until someone creates one, you are stuck using one on your PC.

Personally, I run MSImport and edit the file, on my PC, directly from the Memory Stick.

Besides, for the interviews I record, I have to do so much editing that it would be frustrating and time wasting to do it on the PDA.

I do the same using a MS reader. I hate MS Import.

Ooops. I've written too fast. Only the lucky owners of PALM made handhelds will be able to use Wave Edit Pro. I tried and it doesn't work on my Clié NX70. Why ? Because of Sony's proprietary sound API. I get "Sample Sound API missing" when I try to run it. Now, is there a way to get that API and install it somehow on my Clié ? Pardon me if that is a stupid question but since I already have installed programs on my PDA which are normally supposed to be in ROM (decuma, and a hacked copy of audio and movie players), I'm just wondering if it would be possible to get a copy of a Tungsten's API (or better, A Clié UX-50) and install it on a NX70 ?

Just asking...

Just received from support at Newborn games (developpers of Wave Edit Pro):

"It is true that Wave Edit Pro currently does not support devices using the
Sony proprietary sound API. Depending on sales etc. it's not out of the
question that WEP may be released for Sony Clie devices as well, but don't
expect it to happen within the next couple of months. It is something of a
mystery to us why Sony have been so vague about their own sound
specification, and why their emulator roms don't emulate sound properly."

You now know what you have to do: send e-mails to

feedback@newborngames.se

Telling them you'd buy Wave Edit Pro if a version was developped for Sony API. There is hope, don't give up so soon!!!

I posted Wave Edit Pro in the front page because this should work with the UX series. In this case, this is good news for the UX owners. :)

It should be interesting to see what Sony does next, after the UX.

Otherwise the T3 looks tempting...

Yeah but the T3 doesn't have a thumboard nor a camera...

But I agree that its size, specs and look are interesting. The UX is a no go in my opinion since the screen is too small and also because Sony probably has a proprietary way of going landscape. They will certainly adapt to the standard Palm thing after a while like they did for their sound API...
