I saw a 1 Gb Memory Stick on BestBuy's Homepage for close to $600. I was wondering what size memory sticks everyone uses on their UX-50s.
Thanks for your feedback.

Dude $600 is expensive. I think I saw it at Ecost...Sony/Lexar-$439, SanDisk- $429. All were prices for Memory Stick Pro 1 Gb, Free shipping. Overnight FedEx add $9.90

Personally, (even though I am still deciding whether I should get a UX) I would get the 1 gig if I used the MP3 and video functions a lot. If not, 512 would be plenty...512 sells for about $200 at Ecost. You do the math yourself....video clips at 50-160gb, each MP3's at 3gb's (Or Vorbis files at 1gb for the same quality)

Hope this helps.

I bought a 512 ms with the plan to hold at least 1 complete movie (still haven't figured out how to get a movie on it or where to get it from). At the moment, I have 2 full music CD's on it, plus many pictures and short videos taken with the UX and it's only just less than half full!

Duraace, try Kazaa Lite and see www.verifieddownloads.com

How many Mbs would a whole movie take up (For the UX) at good quality video and sound I wonder? (1.5hrs)

I'm headed for a 512 mb. I usually have 40-60MB in eBooks. With photos, movies, flash anims, audio clips, i suspect I'll need more.

I don't know about putting movies per se on it - It would be fun to see if you CAN, but I would't think of this thing as a viewer.

I can get far more battery life using it as an eBook...

With a pro slot on this, buying anything under 256MB seems a waste. You'll find yourself using up practically anything you get for it...

Well said Omnitron......I say go for the 1gb if you got the cash to splash...if not, 512 is a must!

Anyone here think the price of MS Pros gonna come down significantly? If I'm not mistaken, the 1gb Pros (now $430) used to be twice as expensive only a while back....

The same could be said of Compact flash cards --- They have dropped like a rock... When I first started getting them it was well over $1 per meg. Now it is far less than half that on average.
I bought my first decent card on the net because they were far cheaper than store prices. Now - unless there is a SPECIAL price somewhere on something (usually combined with a manufacture rebate), why bother?

I've not started paying attention to Memory sticks closely until lately, but they always seemed to be much more expensive by comparison to the comparable CF card.. Now they just seem SLIGHTLY more expensive.

Hmm...I guess the main reason why I would go for the 1 gig is because I would hate to be in a position where I would need to switch cards.....although I'm kinda hoping it's not that usual urge of mine to overkill....in any case, watching South Park and Simpsons on the UX does seem like it would be fun!

It is! I've been converting DivX with Image Converter, although it doesn't seem to accept all of them as valid source types. Have been doing 15 minute "Adult Swim" stuff from Cartoon Network with great success. Tried to do a movie, but crashed before I could finish conversion. (Over a wireless connection from a fileserver, so I suppose I shouldn't be shocked)

try using mmplayer from www.mmplayer.com for divx movies, I could get like 1min/MB with still a decent movie resolution, but follow the instruction in the forum (since UX has only 123mhz processor, what is actually pretty much disadvantage in this particular case)

Thanks for all the tips and thoughts. I will check eBay first.

BTW anyone know of any reason NOT to get Sandisk or another brand instead of a Sony branded MS Pro 1gb?

All memory stick cards are manufacture by sony and branded by sony or other companys (Lexar, Sundisk).
I use a 1GB Lexar MSpro on my ux50 which cost me 380$ at ebay.
A 1h:40m "Finding Nemo" movie (originally 697mb DivX), compressed with IC at High quality, cost me the same 380 (mb) on-the-stick.:D

Thanks! So, it sounds like you use a much simpler process...just rip with DivX, and convert with IC? Any other tips required?

Thanks!

I have finally decided to break down and get a 1GB in anticipation of buying a Sony VR100K.

Yep... it won't work if your avi contain XviD video or VBR audio (like in most cases...)

Sorry, you're talking over my head. WHen you say in most cases, do you mean most commercially available DVDs will have these things if ripped with DivX and therefore not be usable in this way?

Thanks,
TM

If you rip a DVD (mpeg2 encrypted), rip it directly to mpeg1, so IC won't have problem at all of converting to MQV.
If you already got a ripped movie, check if it using DivX compression (which IC can handle), or Xvid compression (like most of todays p2p networks video files - which IC can't handle).
Also, the audio track of the movie should be in MP3 CBR in order to read it properly with IC. The problem is that most of today rippers use VBR, which is higher quality at the same file size.
