So I've had my UX50 for about a week, and last night it started giving me problems. All of a sudden, I could not turn my UX50 on. Hit the power switch and nothing. Even the mail or web buttons didn't turn it on. So I reset it, and immediately it shows the Palm Powered logo and everything is ok. It did that twice. Later, even resetting it wouldn't start it. I'd get the Palm Powered logo and it would just freeze there. It took about 10 tries before it even let me do a hard reset.

So I did a hard reset and used it "stock" for a little while. Just to make sure that it wasn't an app I was running or something. Nope. It happened again. This totally sucks. Now I have to go thru the hassle of returning and getting a replacement unit.

sorry to hear that, sounds like you are the first one on the forum to have a hardware failure...

Is there any application you recently installed that would cause the hardware crash. For instance, when I handled the Clie NX80 and installed "ROM Hide." I had nothing but problems... just like you described. At times, I would do a soft reset, and it would go to it's logo and nothing more. The only way around that one, was to perform a Hard Reset. And, with the help of this site, It has been restored!

Sorry to know that. By the way have you any kids or puppies around?

Best luck with your new replacement.

You're making me nervous -- I'm hoping to go get one within the hour....

I'm thinking it was just a bad unit. I've never had any other CLIE go bad on me. I didn't install anything other than ZLauncher and a couple of themes.

It must be the machine because he did a hard reset and after that it still messed up. Sorry to hear that, hopefully you will get a new one soon!

Anything can fail or break, it's not impossible. Lately I seriously question Sony's QC!

Too bad about the defective UX! But to question Sony's QC is wrong. Reality Check: Every manufacturer of every product EXPECTS a certain percentage of defective items in their product lines. Quality Control is an effort to weed out the bad seeds before the customer has the product. In some cases an item can pass QC tests with flying colors and then in real-world use, fail due to a defective component that was marginal and then failed. Simply put, we are human, we are not perfect, therefore, anything we manufacture cannot be perfect. All Japanese companies use a process of manufacture called "SPC"- Statistical Process Control, it was an American whom devised this process and when presented to American Industry in the 70's, there was a consensus among those companies that SPC would be too expensive to impliment and it would yield a small improvement. A Japanese executive decided to use this process in their manufacture, and their defect percentages dropped sharply. At this point, most companies now use SPC, but defects still make it through to the end user.

I have returned mine for hardware error as well. The unit worked fine for five minutes or so, then it just froze for input. It was kind of funny to explain the problem to the staff in the electronics store in tokyo. Took me 2 hrs to get it replaced. Seemed that they had a howl chain of in store experts that all needed to check that it was defect. Tokyo is a cool place to be.

I am just happy that i bought it with 3-4 weeks left here in Tokyo so I can use it for awhile, would be a bumper to have bought it and then left for europe and have a defect screen on unpacking it.

Hi,

same thing happening to me, seems like a problem with the auto backup, mine is always doing a backup so it takes 30 seconds to do the off-on cicle.
Try to power on after power off manually with the power saving function, it works for me (sucks but at least i can use without going to the reset)

I wasn't using the backup thing. I had that turned off.

Too bad to hear that, I hope your new unit will work well... I'll wait to hear more stories (bad or good) before getting mine.

Same as for me - after around 5-8 soft resets (back pin) it came up with the palm logo and stuck there.

Even a hard reset did not function anymore. Need to return it.

It sux.

Hi David,

How do you turn off the power save function ?, I found no place to turn it on or off, just the menu to turn off with backup.

BTW, now i'm able to turn it on with the power switch: just slide the switch , (seems to do nothing as the light doesnt turn green), but wait for 20 seconds , and voila: the ux 50 turns on

Just in case anyone is interested, I was able to solve the problem, despite a myriad of soft resets and a few hard ones, I tried to do a fulll discharge / charge cicle (without restoring from the Backup). And now it works perfect.
