My NR70V kept getting Fatal Error msgs and I have been soft resetting then deleting a program or database, hit the power button, get a Fatal Error, try again.

After deleting the datebook db I now get a "MemoryMgr.c, Line: 4384, Freehandle" error msg. Can anyone tell me what my problem is?

Are you by any change using Documents to Go?

I have run into this problem myself lately. I also deleted my datebook.db because of a problem. This error does appear when I launch Documents To Go, but it doesn't happen consistently.

I get the same message and the problem is, no matter how I reset, and hot sync, it does the same thing! I've reloaded a memory stick backup, hot synched, etc. I'm confused! I do not use or sync Docs to Go, but I do think it is on my clie. I have a T615c.

The weird thing is that it just seems to happen the first time I run the program on my PDA after I sync it. After that one reset, it seems to go back to working fine. Maybe my Clie is possessed by evil spirits.

I got this error a long time ago and I am trying to remember what caused it. I know the "Today" program once gave me a hard time.

Is it possible you Hotsynced an incomplete .prc file? That happened to me once. The file going in was way too small, but it was not stopped form loading. It caused crashes even when I didn't run the offending file. Check your Sony Handheld folder/username/backup folder.

YES! Thank you so much! I deleted the Today program and database and I'm all set. I suppose this makes sense, since Today queries the processor each time it is turned on to see if it should automatically open. I liked the program, but I'm so glad that you helped me fix the crash problem! Thanks!

Great news!

BTW I liked Today also, but couldn't stand the freeze-ups.

Have you tried Wassup? I registered it, and I'm a cheapskate!

error message.

Sometimes the only thing to do is to back up all your important data to a temporary folder, do a hard reset and then reinstall third party apps one at a time and watch carefully to see which is the offending program. If you get the message right after the hard reset it's Sony Support time (brrrrrrr).

I had this same "Freehandle" problem just yesterday after restoring everything from the card to my new NR. Everything was fine, soft resetting was fine, but as soon as I would press power button I would get that fatal alert.

I disabled all the hacks, even deleted some apps that in my opinion could be causing it on the start up, but no luck. I don't use Docs to Go, nither "Today". So I createed a backup, did hard reset and installed one by one. Skipping the ones I would find suspicious or didn't need. All is fine now.

Anyway, if any of you guys, discover what could be causing that for sure, let us all know please.

I too had major problems with Today on my NR, which ceased as soon as I had deleted it.

This is a long-shot guess but:

I deleted a few programs the other day, then received a similar error when trying to launch "My Bills" which uses NSBRuntime.prc (Basic interpreter?).

Thinking one of the deleted programs used it, and it got deleted with that program, I reinstalled it from the My Bills zip, and was back in business. So now, I wonder if losing some companion program causes this?

I decided to just delete Documents To Go and re-install the program. It looks like it worked. I have not had this error message appear since I did it. I've run the Clie through the paces and no sign of the problem anymore.

Someone told me that the error may have something to do with font hacks. Docs To Go uses some font hack. I'm not sure.

It seems I'm not the only one to run into this problem but the origins of my problem started when I chanced the battery in my Sony Clie NR 70V. After successully replacing the battery, I immediately received the error message:MemoryMgr.c,Line:4384, Free handle".

Other symptoms:
1. The power off switch is inoperable. The unit is always on.
2. After doing a full reset, the error message re-appears after going through the normal Sony start-up sequence.
3. If I depress the "UP" button during a full reset, the screen shows the "Preference Menu" which seems to work. No other menu function work and the screen eventually brings up the same error message.
4. I've attempted to HotSync after ding a full reset with the UP button depressed. Initiallly, it appears the HotSync has started correctly and then the error message appears again and everything freezes up again.
5. I've reinstalled the old battery and there isn't any difference.

HELP!!!!! I really love my Clie and use it every day to keep track of my appointments, wake up alarm, etc., etc. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Free Handle implies a corrupted file somewhere although Ive now idea what it might be...

Hi SoS,
Thanks for the advice. Sony's not being any help. They suggested I pack it up and ship it to them for repair. The last time I had a problem, they wanted to charge me $400. Instead of paying them, I bought a used one for $115.

Can you tell me how to do a "Hard Reset"? Is it simply depressing the Reset button on the back?

Also, is there a way to get to my Clie files even though I'm having the problems I've explained in my previous message?

Thanks again.

not sure how to hard reset on a sony but try pressing the reset button/pin and hold down the power button until you see a dialogue or something. Dont forget you will lose everything on the device by doing this. Make suer you have a backup etc....
