Another reason to be upset at Sony: why did they use that *.mqx movie format when *.mpg is so widely used?
Anyway I was wondering if there are any way to convert on-board the Clie?

Why would you need to do that, just curious?

You CAN play *.mpgs natively on the CLIE, but the CLIE's MPEG-4 files are perfectly acceptable (and definitely preferable). *.mqvs offer the same video quality, better performance, and are much more compact (I have a 5:30 minute *.mqv video that's only 11MB).
I guess the time required for conversion is a pretty valid reason to want MPEG playback, though. Here's the instructions to get your CLIE to play *.mpg movies natively:
1) In the root directory of the Memory Stick, create the MSSONY\MOML0001 folders.
2) Copy your movie to the MOML0001 folder.
3) Using ClieFiles, rename the MPG file to MOV00001.MPG (The file can be numbered from 00001 to 09999).
4) Open the built-in movie player, and make sure to switch the movie category from 'Movie Player Format' to MPEG Movie Format.'
Your movies should now be listed and playable! Note, however, that performance for bigger files leave something to be desired. You can always lower the bitrate with an MPEG encoding appllication on your PC, but if you're willing to spend time converting, you might as well stick to Image Converter.

Basically so I could e-mail and beam short clips to friends. Or put them directly into PowerPoint presentatrions without having to go through the trouble of converting them.
Why didn't Sony make the MovieRecorder able to record them in *.mpg, one of the most popular formats?
.mqv is mpg, its a wierd version of mpeg 4 :)

But *.mqv is not as 'universally' accepted as *.mpg, it is?
It seems to me that *.mpg's can play on almost any computer, while *.mqv only on machines with the latest version of QT?
Also I tried embbeding a *.mqv in a PowerPoint presentation and it came up as "QT not installed / file type unrecognized". Guess I'll just have to convert it anyway. . . .

While I think Sony should have given an option to record in either MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 formats, I think it is great that the native format is MPEG-4 because I have a feeling that more and more of Sony's equipment will now support this format. In the near future, this format should be standard on most every computer. It wasn't long ago when you had to download software to playback .MPG files.

Thanx cbulock - and I do appreciate that it is a better standard, smaller files It just I need to back-convert it now (for PowerPoint), and don't want to spend $$$ for QT Pro. . . .
