i want to clarify / confirm...

on a ux50, while using verichat via wifi, you can pop out and use other applications and it will still be running on the ux50 and notify you when you have a message?

i've yet to be able to do this (msn or aol) it simply closes the app on exit and i want to confirm.

cheers,
pt

No veriChat the app dosen't multi-task, the proxy server at PDAApps will keep you logged into your configured IM server (yahoo, aim, msn etc...) and then notify you via SMS (i.e. on a phone text-message) when you get a message.

Then you have to launch verichat again, connect and answer the message.

You won't see some kind of multitasking until OS6

Actually...

I use Verichat on my NX70V. You launch Verichat and log onto the proxy. Then you can exit the app. As long as you keep your WiFi on it will work. When you get a new message, a window pops up with the message and who it's from, and you get an option to ignore it, quick reply (lets you reply and stay in your current app) or chat (launches Verichat). It is very very slick and perfect for working at school. It's not TRUE multitasking... I believe it actually uses something called HOOKS in OS5.

It's not a function of the phone.. it works all on the Clie. I don't have a cell phone setup with Verichat. It alerts you in the PalmOS... not your phone. It's great.

hmm, that doesn't work on my ux50. when you exit, it really exits and no messages go through.

There are some settings. Make sure you have an alert for the messages set. Look around in the options and you should see some alert options. Make sure you have the newest beta also.

I can't get in there to look to see exactly what it says right now. I do not have a WiFi signal in my dorm room, and Verichat won't let you in the app if it cannot find a connection.

Wait... how does it notify your Palm that there's a new message? SMS or IP? I would think SMS and all that would get expensive and difficult as settings varied for different carriers... but I remember the website mentioning something like that.

sms when you're not on wifi...and it could get expensive, yep.

you can use other apps while maintaining an AIM connection..

Works over wifi and gprs (via BT) I used it both on OS 4 and 5 (now whith NX73).
To get the sms you need to have an address which can receive email and forward sms (my ISP has it as a standard service).

The ICQ client used to do this on OS4 - it would beep if you got a message when in another app. Not sure how it works, but it is possible on PalmOS.

The SMS is a great feature, but not necessary. I used it on my Treo - so you could be logged in and getting AIMs even if your device was off. Not an option with the UX, but being able to be in another application is still pretty good.

Is anyone able to explain how this works or point me in the right direction??? Can I have aim running in the background while I am on wifi? When I went to the verichat site it mentioned u need to configure the email address of your mobile phone. I assume that's to notify you of im's via sms?

This is an important feature for me and will effect my purchase decision. I am new to Palm OS, well it's been at least 4 years since my Palm VX Thanks.

OK, you can have verichat running in background and receive the message on the palm if you are online.
You need sms notification to receive a messages when you are offline, this is done with a proxy I understand.
Great SW

Thanks, so OS 5 does have multitasking capabilities??? I thought we had to wait till OS 6 for that. Verichat is able to stay running with an open connection while I check email or surf the web??? If that's true, that is great news!!!!

Yes, OS 5 can do some basic multitasking. On an NX80V, VeriChat will notify you that an IM is coming in no matter what application you are running.

I'm currently testing VeriChat with the UX50. My tests aren't complete but it looks like there are a some compatibility problems. For example, sending or receiving mail with ClieMail will shut down VeriChat's connection to the AIM proxy.

Thank again Ed. Do you know if the AOL's AIM client does the same thing??? In pocket PC it does of course....
