View Full Version : Why the UX-50 is going back to the store

Everything about this is nice. Unfortunately, there is one problem: After I got the clie ux 50 paired and surfing the web over GPRS/BT, I noticed that every so often, the GPRS connection on the phone would drop and the clie would blithely continue on unawares till the ppp timed out.

I thought this was a problem with my settings or hardware, but after using the same phone over GPRS for hours (phone is plugged in as well as my laptop), I can safely say this is an issue with the BT implementation on the clie/palm.

My setup. I have tried and can repeat this by using both the siemens S56 and the Nokia 6310i. The hardware I have used in the PEG-TG50 and the UX-50. Other hardware I have used as control are: Apple Powerbook 15" running macos X 10.2.something, Dell c840 with d-link DBT 120 bluetooth usb dongle, Ipaq 5555 w/ built in bt, ipaq 2215 with built in BT and a Panasonic W2 using dbt 120 dongle.

In all the cases EXCEPT for the clies, I can log on and surf the web for hours without dropping a session. With the clies, sometimes it'll go for as long as 15-20 minutes, then the BT light gives the flicker of death, goes back to solid. and the Phone has dropped GRPS connectivity. wait for timeout, disconnect, and the reconnect.

The service provider is ATT Wireless GSM.

This random dropping of GPRS sessions on the clie is forcing me to send this back. I've already wasted $300 on the PEG TG50, no need to drop another 700 on the UX. The Ipaq 2215 works fine. The setup is identical, and often, I test back to back without touching the phone.

My setup can be seen at http://www.vijaygill.com/awe.txt

with some mods for the S56 obviously, etc.

Is this specific to your carrier, perhaps?

vgill
09-15-2003, 12:42 AM
It is possible that this is specific to ATT GPRS, but like i said, using a control group consisting of mac, windows XP and pocket PC 2003 devices, the clies (two of them) are the only ones coming up short.

I tend to think this is a sony issue till someone has proof otherwise. Of course, I am testing this and have not yet had a connection drop on my ux50 for the past 30 minutes. it is enough to make a grown man cry like a baby.

Have you tried to put "idle time out" to never.
This fixed the issue for me...

You can find this in the detail menu of the Network page.

Hate to say it, but I've put in about 6 hours of connecting my UX50 to my Nokia 6310i in the week that I've had my UX, and I have NOT experienced this problem.

Granted, I had a little trouble initially configuring everything, but since then, it's been rock-solid.

I, too, am on AT&T. So far, so good.

Hey /v,
So sorry to hear about your troubles! Maybe it's the 1 thing you haven't controlled for - your UX50! Meaning, maybe a different unit would not have the drop problem? Maybe a nearby friend or store would let you set your phone up with their UX50 so you could see.

Would you be so kind as to post the exact setup on nokia, and ux side?

Anthony, I think it may be my palm setup, because this problem also occurs on the TG-50 as well as the UX-50.

I keep thinking this is something I'm doing wrong, but for the life of me, I can't figure out WHAT.

Hmmm, out of curiosity, did you see the instructions I wrote up for the UX50-Siemens S55 pairing and GPRS surfing with TMobile? Might be worth comparing for kicks?

Excellent post, and yes. I have mine up at www.vijaygill.com/awe.txt

The problem isn't getting connected, the connection works, the problem is _random_ disconnections. Almost as if the bluetooth flickers off and the phone notices and drops gprs.

it is very frustrating, let me tell you ;)

Bobbys, I agree w/vgill maybe you can post your settings so we can try it out. I'm going to try vgills settings on my clie later on today to see how it works.

Bluetooth has been stable for me through a few hours of mixed web surfing and e-mail. No random disconnects.

Equipment: UX50, Ericsson T610, T-Mobile T-Zones GPRS service.

phone firmware updates are sometimes work looking at also...but the OP said he could reproduce the issue with two different phones! This leads me to suspect carrier, since both Palm units (tg50 and ux50) exhibit the behavior.

On the Zaurus board, people in one part of the US reported IR data connections with one type of Nokia phone dying after about 60 seconds. It was always reproducible, but only with that one model phone (3360, or something like that), and only on the East coast. It was never solved, to my knowledge...but where are vgill and bobbys located?

That was me above (thought it would auto-log me in if I entered my password on the post screen...apparenly not). Maybe scractch my location theory, since bobbys's sig says "NY" under location. :( It was just a guess, though. I feel vgill's pain, as I was an oft-beta tester of the original BT stack for the Zaurus a year or so ago and it was pretty frustrating at times.

Hausman, I can stay online for _hours_ (over 12 hours at a stretch once downloading windows patches), using windows XP with the DLINK DBT-120 usb dongle. Ditto for macintosh powerbooks with os X and windows mobile 2003 stuff like ipaq. I believe this is not a carrier related issue.

On another note, I managed to stay online for about an hour today before the mysterious gprs death occurred.

my EYES are bleeding with rage.

In the 'script' screen (Choose Preferences->Network->Details->Script), you'll see a downward-pointing triangle near the top...that's a popup menu. Select that, and you'll be presented with a bunch of options...one of which is 'GPRS1', another is 'GPRS2', all down the line.

Choose each one as I directed, and then don't fill in a parameter (you'll understand when you're doing it). Once you make the first selection, a new popup menu will appear after the one you just set. Do the same for this second menu. Repeat until done.

I hope I'm making this clear...sorry if it's not.

Huh....that's weird.

I'm looking at my screen now, and I see the various options.

Maybe this is one of the reasons you've been having trouble?

I know you probably already know this, but the various GPRSx options are at the bottom of the menu in question (you probably have to scroll...they're initially off-screen).

I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Sorry!

anyone else able to see these things? I must be doing something wack here, cause its simply not happening. I've followed the instructions above to the letter, installed 6310i.prc and reset the device.

Aha, bobby, what files, other than the 6310i.prc did you install from the phonelink?

I think this may be it. I will try it out at work later today.

I don't believe I installed any other files, but I could very well be mistaken.

I do remember that I tried installing the 'standard' stuff from Phone Link at one point, but when I tried to run it, I got an error message ('does not work on this model, bla bla').

Aha...I just checked, and I still have the following 'other' Phone Link files installed:

MoHiSpLib (Mobile High Speed Library)
PMHDB

So, if adding these work, then I apologize for misleading you.

I can be such a boob.

Tried all of the above. And frankly, fcuk it, if the pocket PC has no idea or need of any initialization strings to connect via dialup network on the bt phone, I don't see why I should have to struggle for days on this and then solve it, only to be plagued by random drops. the UX is fired, back to the shop it goes. hopefully the treo 600 will work out a bit better.
