Hello!
Been reading this site for many months, now. I finally saved my pennies and upgraded myself from the Handspring Platinum to the NX80V. WOW! The NX80V is an incredible gadget, borders on a micro-laptop. So much functionality.
Question: Is there system enhancement applet out there that can re-map the four hard buttons on the screen (when the unit is in tablet mode)? These are the four hard buttons at the bottom of the screen (calendar, phone, task, memo).
I got really used with my old PDA in that I could use the UP and DOWN buttons to scroll up and down a list of objects...
I know about jog dial, not used to it yet. Part of my hesitance is that I'm left handed and I hold the stylus with my left hand and used to push the UP and DOWN buttons with my right hand or the stylus. Eventually I guess it'll just be a matter of re-programming the brain to use the jog-dial.
I've also heard of a nice program called WonderSilk that can allow one to 'add' buttons to the VG area. That's nice, but hard buttons would be good too...
Ideas?

You can easily change the functionality of the hardware buttons. Simply go to Prefs, then Buttons (should be at the top). Any application you have installed can be assignd to any of the 4 hardware buttons. You can also assign an alternate application for the calc button in the default silk screen, and special fucntions for stylus strokes and hotsync.
Don't worry about the jog dial. You will get used to it. I am ambidexterous, but favor my right hand simply because society is built around right handed use. Though I use my PDA as a right handed user in most aspects, I hold my PDA in my right hand while reading e-books simply because it is more comfortable. While holding the NX80 in tablet mode, I use my middle or index finger to turn the jog dial.

Go to Preferences, then select "Buttons". There you will be able to assign the Hard Buttons to other apps.

Yep, I know about prefs, but can I change the button to the UP or DOWN arrow button? I didn't see that option. I can only change it to a different program, not a different 'hardware' button function.

Use the jog wheel or install a program called OKey. This will put Up/Down keys on the screen.

No, but you can try Okey, it's a freeware app found at www.palmgear.com (http://www.palmgear.com)
It adds up and down arrows on the bottom status bar plus has sticky keys, super jog assist, and other goodies!

As a fellow southpaw, I can assure you that acclimating to the jogdial is pretty easy once you use it a bit.
I run the jogdial and back button on my N760c with the middle finger on my right hand. If I need to use any of the hardware buttons, I just shift my grip a bit and use my right thumb.
I gave a NX80 a trial-run at the local "WorstBuy" the other day (I'm soon to be the proud owner of an NX73) and I had no problems following a similar procedure...both in tablet- and open-mode. All the while I can keep my stylus handy in my left paw.
You should be able to run the power/hold slider with your right ring finger too using the same grip.
I actually think most of the Clies were designed by a southpaw as the ergonomics for us left-handed folk are pretty darn good. :D
Congrats on the upgrade! The Visors were nice rigs...I had a Neo myself for a while...but crude compared to the Sonys.

The Tealpoint software product called TealLaunch (http://www.tealpoint.com/softlnch.htm) should do what you want. It requires TealMaster (http://www.tealpoint.com/softmstr.htm), but allows remapping of all hardware buttons (including the jog dial and back key), plus stroke mapping. And combinations like press the number 1 and 4 keys simultaneously, or press and hold the number 3 key, or swipe from the calculator graffiti icon to the lower left alpha area.
What you want to do is choose (from a very long list of possibilities for the action to take) it to have TealLaunch issue the "key code" for the up or down button.
Now, I don't know what that key code is, but I'm sure someone here must. I searched for a bit online looking for the .h file it must be in, but I didn't find it.

My mistake; TealLaunch allows you to simply press the key you want to have substituted instead of having to manually enter the key code. The appropriate key code is then displayed and entered.....

Too bad, I support Tealpoint in OS 3.5 only.

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying, but the new TealMaster and TealLaunch work with OS 5.

I mean in OS 5, I do not need the extra functions from Tealpoint. I do not wish to take the risk to crash my clie with it.
