Try this:

* Get MusicMatch Jukebox. It's free and lets you record music from your CD's into MP3's.

* Record a bunch of your CD songs into standard MP3's at 128kbps. Don't use VBR or MP3Pro or other non-standard format.

* Use the Data Import App on your UX50. It mounts the CLIE's memory stick as a disk drive on your computer.

* Copy the MP3 file from your PC to the Data Imported CLIE drive. You should put them in the \PALM\PROGRAMS\MSAUDIO directory so the Audio Player App can see them.

* Enjoy your tunes.

Can anyone comment on using the included SonicStage software? Even though the target format going to the MM isn't MP3, I would assume that since SonicStage is Sony and the UX50 is Sony, that the two understand each other? Isn't this the case??

MM==MS (memory stick, that is).

I LOVE Sony and used SonicStage for a while when I got my first CLIE.

The biggest problem with it, is that it wants you to use MagicGate memory sticks (the white ones), and enforces a crazy "Check-In/Check-Out" logic.

You can only check any song out 3 times... But what if you need space on your MS for another file? If you delete a song without checking it back in -- it's gone. 3 strikes, and you're back to riping the song from disk.

When I got my NR70 last year, I used Sonic Stage again -- but since I reinstalled, it erased my entire music collection! (Digital Restriction Management at work.)

I started re-ripping my 200 CD's -- but part way through, I thought to check out other software. I looked at a couple Jukebox programs, and found Music Match.

It works great with the CLIE, let's you backup your music collection, RIPS much faster, will let you search your collection by Album Cover! etc, etc, etc. My whole collection is in Music Match now at 128kbps.

Okay, so that was a little long, but it's why I don't recommend getting tied into Sonic Stage. If the latest version is 1000 times better, someone let me know.

By the way, with SMBMate I can browse/download my Music Match album collection via WiFi from my new UX50 from anywhere in the house.

There's no way you can do that with Sonic Stage -- the database is encrypted and locked to a specific machine.

Thank you! All valid reasons, especially the tie to the specific MS using check in/out. I also like the idea of being able to download via WiFi. I'll go the route of Music Match. Would you say the sonic quaility is the same/better than using SonicStage?

Just installed Music Match and copied a CD to files. You're right, this is THE way to do it. Very intuitive with flexability. I'll probably eventually buy it.

Sony says that the ATRAC3 format encodes at higher quality than the same size MP3.

They're probably right. But, to be honest, I can't tell the difference in sound between them -- and ATRAC3 means having to use the White Magic Gate memory sticks that cost more.

As far as the MP3 quality from Sonic Stage, I'm willing to be that it's no better than any commercial MP3 encoder.

Yeah -- I bought Music Match also. The free version is great, but for a few bucks, you get faster rips and burns and some other extras.

Is there a specific option in the MusicMatch software wherein you could export MP3s and playlists directly to the Clie without using the Data Export utility? I am thinking of trying this software too, got tired of messing around with Sonic Stage.

Last time I checked, MusicMatch didn't have a Device plug-in for Clie's. (They support a lot of music players like the Rio though.)

You need to launch the Data Export app on the Clie, then tell MusicMatch to save the playlist onto the Drive representing the Memorystick.

If you have MS card reader attached, couln't Music Match save the play list to that device? Would sticking it into the Clie then give you access to the music?

Sure. You can save to a memory card reader.

But you don't need a memory card reader to transfer music. The Clie can act as its own memory card reader using the Date Export App.

The Clie has a faster transfer rate than most of the third party and multi-format readers out there.

I agree, I have always found that to be the case, unless a USB2 reader is used with the MS Pro stick.

Isn't that the Data Import app on the Clie instead, as it is on others? Data Export is on the desktop PC. I only mention it, in case someone is cornfused by it.:)

Sony Style lists the transfer rates on most of its devices.

Some third parties do also.

There are two Memory Stick Mice -- the old gray one (MSAC-US5) doesn't support Memory Stick Pro and is not particularly fast. The spec doesn't even list memory stick transfer rates.

The new one (MSAC-US70) is transparent and more wedge shaped. It does support Memory Stick Pro. It has a fairly respectable memory stick transfer rate of: Write 750KB/S, Read 880KB/S.

For fastest transfer, you can get a PC Card adapter (MSAC-PC3) that transfers data at 1.2MB/S.

There's also the new USB 2.0 adapter (MSAC-US30). It gets you up to 4.4MB/S on a Memory Stick Pro. That's as fast as they go.
