I am planning on buying a 1 GB CF card for my NX80 to put lots of mp3's and movies. I went to CF forum and read the instructions about how to make NX80 "CF compatible". Before I spent the money, here are questions for the CF guru:

1. Everything I own is memory stick based (readers/writers) and I was wondering how I could "load" files to the CF in NX80... When I enable "data import" from the CLIE, will CF card also appear as a removable storage device?

2. I am not planning to keep the CF card all the time in NX80 (only when I want to listed to mp3's). Is there a problem with this? Specifically, am I going to have to disable some stuff, take the memory stick out first, etc etc before I insert the CF card?

3. I read some posts re: battery life and CF cards... will a 1 GB card drain the battery any different from a 256 MB CF?

4. Do CF and MS get along well, while inserted and used at the same time (e.g., listening to mp3s from CF card and taking pictures and saving them to MS)?

Thats all I can think of for now... please feel free to add anything to this list.

Thanks!!!

1. Yes, you can mount your NX80's CF as removable storage from your PC (you do have a PC, right?). Once you load the DataExport software onto your PC, just put in the CF card, put your Clie in the cradle, tap on the CF icon on the Clie's status bar, and tap "PC Link." If you've ever done this with a Memory Stick, it works exactly the same.

2. You do NOT need to keep the CF in the slot at all time, especially since you're planning on using it for MP3s and movies (i.e., not to hold software). You should NOT need to disable anything or take the memory stick out, although depending on what patches you've used for the movie and audio player, there may some limitations. I use the Pelaca versions of these programs and have no problems at all.

3. I have no hard data, but I have heard that the CF will drain the battery faster than a MS. I hadn't heard that a 1G card will drain the battery faster than a 256M one, although I suppose that's possible.

4. Again, depends on what hacked version of the apps you're using. However (again), I haven't had any problems with listening to music with the Pelaca audio player and loading stuff of the MS.

I too looked at getting a 1gig card, good price was about$230 for one. Not planning on using it for anything else, my digicam is sony.

You'll need Eruware, which is 30$

Instad I bought a Brand new model Creative Nomad zen nx for 299$, and it has 30 GB's!

I had intended to just use the clie for everything, but the bang for the buck was just too much.

Battery life is stated as 14 hours, which have yet to test, but even half of that would be awesome. The Zen NX is a little smaller than my Peg-Nx73. The Zen is no iPOD or Sony Clie in its construction, but great performance and value for the money. COmes with a real nice case!

Nothing against the clie, Just a price performance issue. I could be happy to just a gig, but 30 allows you an inventory. Conservitive, 30 Gigs is over 500 cds!, or 8,000 songs.

Classical, jazz, rock, comedy, books on "tape", all on hand when you want it.

thanks for the post... i see your point re having another device for music files.

amazon.com has a $50 rebate on 1 GB Viking CF card, which makes the final cost $171 (shipped), in case anybody is interested...

Do you need eruware for the NX 80s?

No.  The ability to read/write to CF memory cards is built into the NX80.  You will need patched versions of some of the apps (e.g., Audio Player, Movie Player, etc.) if you want to use CF with them.

Sorry, I was thinking more about my NX73 and unaware about the 80's superior system.

The NX73 and NX80 are the same with respect to using CF.  No need for Eruware on either model.
