I'm confused about using MSPRO or regular Memory Stick.

I'll be using an NX70v and I know there is a patch for it to use MSPRO medi, but in the thread I read, something about needing a purple memory stick came up, when you had to do a hard reset. I'm confused about this, are there any advantages to using the regular purple stick?

The regular purple (or blue) memory stick is the cheapest, but tops out at 128M. The white Memory Gate sticks are the same (max 128M), but allow "protected" music files to be loaded onto them. MS Pro sticks are more expensive, but allow for sizes over 128M.

I believe the issue is that is that, after a hard reset, the MS Pro patch wouldn't be on your NX70. You then wouldn't be able to read you MS Pro sticks until you reloaded the MS Pro patch.

Frankly, if you can live with 128M, the original purple sticks are the way to go. You can find sales on them quite often. If you want to store a lot of music or video on a single stick, then MS Pro is going to be your only option (other than CF, which is a whole other story).

Ok I get it thanks. But one more question, I thought the NX70v could only read up to 128mb? And that the Memory Stick Pro had a switch where you would have to pop it out and hit a switch to get to the other 128mb. Was this fixed?

You're thinking of "Memory Stick Select." Sony has 5 kinds of Memory Sticks:

(1) "Purple" (max at 128M)
(2) "White" Memory Gate
(3) MS Select (basically two purples in one, with a switch)
(4) MS Pro
(5) MS Duo (physically smaller)

I believe MS Pro are Memory Gate, as well.

With the patch available from Sony, you can use the MS Pro sticks, albeit with some limitations (see http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/news/cliemspro.html).

MS Pro also don't give you their entire capacity. Sony has loaded some of its junk (magicgate?) on it. My 512 MB MS Pro gives me around 468.1 MBs. It bummed me out at first, but it's nice to have the larger capacity and not have so many 128 MB MS.

Are you sure that MSPRO's memory is loaded with some Sony stuff that is useless to the consumer? Cause I know that hard drives sold as 100 gig aren't always 100gig. They might be like 99.5 gigs or maybe a bit over. I know my computer was sold to me as a 12 gig computer, but it really only had like 11.6 or something. I'm not sure if RAM works the same way though.

I too have a 512 mb MSPro. I get only 468.1 mb of usable space. I don't think this is because Sony has installed some junk on it. I think it's more llike the file system (FAT) it taking up the place. For example, take a 80 gig hard drive. You don't get the entire 80 gig to use after formatting the drive, do yo? Same concept with the MSPro...

The NR70 CAN'T use the MS Pro, but can use the memory stick select(2x128).

The MS Pro will NOT support Magic Gate on the Clie and it's formatted as FAT with no extra junk on it, so smokeymountain is correct!;)

Yes, they are the same. You can get updates from http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/. Just click on your model (NX70V, in your case).

P.S. I just realized that I'm not sure if there are any differences between the US model and the Australian model (if there is such a thing). Therefore, you might want to check to see if the updates on the site I posted will work for you.

This is a US based site so people will point you to the US support site. I assume you have a european model (coming from London) and for european models you cannot (or rather, should not) use that site for your updates. The front page of ClieSource shows all the different support sites. Basically the european models are a bit newer than the US models so you need less patches.

The european support site is on Clie-Link.com (http://www.clie-link.com/) Get your MS Pro patch there. BTW you only need it if you want to play MP3. At least that's the only problem I had with MS Pro. MP3 would play for 1 second and then skip.

...and it works fine. i just downloaded the MSPro update from Sony and my nx70v read it perfectly. i like this stick much better than having 128 on one side and 128 on another. that's kinda goofy - would rather have one continuous block. (plus i'm gonna use it in my new 5 megapixel DSC-P10!)

What a nice excuse which might work out for me too. But I try to hold back to NX80 till OS6 at least.

NX80 can support CF without any patch. But I still prefer MS Pro as there is a great diff. in speed when viewing photo in acidimage in both cards.;)
