View Full Version : Is it bad to leave a memory stick in all the time?

Or is it worse to constantly insert it and take it out? Sorry if this has been asked 1000s of times - memory stick is such a common search term.

No problem just leaving it in all the time.

I've had a Clie for about two years, from the T615 to T665 to now owning an NX80, and have ALWAYS left my memory stick in the device.

I say leave it in  . The more you take it in and out, the more likely it is to get lost or broken ;) .

I always keep my MS in too, avoids the hassle of looking for it. :)

I have a 512 mb MSPro, and I ALWAYS leave it in my nx80. The only card I put in and out is my CF card. That DEFINITELY should not be in all the time. There is no problem leaving th MS in, though. Think of it as a hard drive for your clie. You don't keep removing your hard drive for your desktop, do you?

Whats wrong with leaving the CF card in all the time?

I don't think anything for a NX70, since the CF slot is rigid (although a wifi card could break, right). But remember for a NX80 the CF slot door is retractable and IMHO seems a little flimsy.

Less wear and tear, period!!!

That's what I would like to know? I leave my CF card or WL100 in all the time??

I have found nothing wrong with the retractable door, so far it's held up well!:)

Yes, the CF slot door on the nx80 is retractable. So why don't I leave my CF card in all the time? Two reasons -

a. It makes my leather bill-fold case pretty bulky. If I have the CF card in, then I can't have my earphones plugged in as well; the case doesn't close.

b. The CF slot is pretty open. Therefore, it is more prone to dust and dirt getting in than the MS slot. Also, it makes the nx80 lose it's slim form factor.

Oh, okay, that's just your personal preference, and that's fine!:)

I recently upgraded my NX70V to a NX80. For months I left a 1 gb CF card in the rigid CF slot on the NX70V. I am a physician and have almost completely filled the CF card with reference materials. After 9 days of using the NX80 with the CF card always in the retractable slot, an internal part apparently broke such that the right side of the CF slot was no longer secure and pushed in with a little pressure. I carry the NX80 in the pant pocket without any case. Although not fatal in itself, the unbalanced support made it hard to use the keyboard on a flat surface. There was no specific event or undue pressure put on the slot. Almost immediately I noted that the retractable stylet would not go into it's slot on the Clie. Not realizing any connection, I fiddled with it and finally was able to get it in the slot. Then I could not put a memory stick in the slot which happens to be just below the stylet. The unit was rendered useless in all of three minutes. I returned the NX80 and was given a brand new unit. Again, I put the CF card in the slot and left it in. I was very careful no to put any stress on the unit other than being in a pant pocket. After 10 days, the CF door developed the same support problem. The retractable stylus problem returned. This time I gently turned the unit upside down and was able to shake out a small 2 mm piece of metal from the stylet hole. Clearly, the CF door has a small support part that easily breaks off and internally slides into the stylet hole. If you put the stylet in, it will be further displaced into the memory stick area just below.

This radically changed how I use my Clie since the CF slot is now useless as a continuous storage device. I had to buy a $560 1 gb Memory Stick Pro and now use the the CF card for occasional extraneous stuff like MP3 files. I do like the slimmer profile of the NX80, but the cost was ridiculous.

Don't worry, in a few months the price will probably be $100 for 1 gig.. ;-P Hey, you're a doctor, you're rich, you can afford it.. ;-P

I think Sony needs to be shot on their Memory Stick pricing, it's insane. Just compare it to CF pricing, sillyness. I think I did see a standard MS on sale at Staples tho for about $35 for a 128 meg after rebates which is decent. I'm still quite pissed off that the standard MS went only to 128 meg. That was horrid lack of foresight by Sony as to what the market needed. Even when they came out 128 meg sticks were not going to be enough with the rapidly increasing digital camera picture sizes.

No. My memory Stick had been used heavily since the days Sony create N760 as I keep changing MS for more song--at that time, there is no MS Pro yet. you see.;)

Hi all,

I'm somewhat new to the Memory Stick format but is it "hot-swappable"? Can I insert/remove the MS while the CLIÉ is still powered on? (Of course, only when no apps are reading/writing to it.)

Thank you all in advance! :)

I leave my MS in except when I'm uploading pictures to my desktop or something. It does come out a fair amount of the time. The way I look at it is with my digital camera, cards and such have to be taken out and put back in regularly.
With my NX70, I left the wifi card in all the time, but not with my NX80.

A friend warned me that the constant in/out of the MS or CF card could cause a problem in regards to hosing up the pins. I think that his opinion came from a problem that happened with a PCMCIA card that he had.

I have the Sony WIFI card, a 512 CF card and 3 128 MS and they are in and out of my NX70V several times a day for the past year or so. I have had no problems to date. If you were one to upgrade ever couple of years of so I would not worry. The ones that should worry are the consumers that might buy a used unit on eBay.
