View Full Version : battery life

I read in a previous post that turning off the "beam enable" in the preferences extends battery life. I tried it and it's amazing what a difference it has made.
I had been having problems with reminders that would pop up and if I didn't acknowledge them timely, it seemed like the alarm would keep repeating to the point my battery would just drain (or at least it seemed like that was what was happening) and I would have to reset. I turned off the LED alarm and the problem seemed to go away. Anyone else have something like this happen? Just wondering if this was the real cause.

How much longer do you get (battery life) with "beam enable" off?
I'm deciding between a T665C and SJ33, the major factor against the T665C for me being battery life.
thanks-

It seemed like I was losing 20% of my battery life every day depending on usage. Now I lose about 3 or 4% a day. It is a drastic improvement. Initially I was thinking I could have spent my money on something else, but now I am happy with my Clie T665.

I've just tried your battery fix, and I hope it will improve its life between charges. I did read in some posts that it didn't help much, but we'll see. The T665 battery sucks, in fact, I wanted to dump the Clie for a Tungsten which I am told had better power management ( and less software fluff like putting pictures in the address book and having "Picture Frame", further draining the battery).

Does anyone know how much a new T665C battery costs?? and are there aftermarket ones that lasts longer??

It would be nice, but I think the size of the T665C prevents a long-lasting battery. The SJ33 lasts longer but is much thicker. I actually don't think the T665C is that bad for the regular apps, it's when you start playing movies and sounds (especially through the built-in speaker), that the battery goes down.

Guys!! what you need is Energy Dimmer and here is why: PalmOS devices with an active colour screen (Palm IIIc, m515, Visor Prism, Sony Clie colour devices) consume a lot of energy and therefore they won't usually run as long as devices with a monochrome screen. Energy Dimmer aims at helping you to save energy, increasing the time your colour device will run without a charge or battery change. Right now it gives you 21 days in the trial without limitations and until feb 19 it's only US$5.50, I have it in my Clie T665 and it's really great, you can set different levels of light, like if you want to read or put it in work mode, no limits in the levels. It works far better than anything else I've seen including the beam off option. you can find it here: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=52025720030126200036&prodID=28880
good luck!!

What's the difference between energy dimmer and simply setting your backlight to a low setting?

The difference is that Energy Dimmer has an option that set correctly will lower the light automatically to an ever lower level if you do not touch the screen, saving you battery life, and when you touch the screen again the original light setting comes up again, so the light goes up and down depending on the use, and always saving power, at the long run it makes a difference!

Now, in a recent post I heard something about how the hold button will drain your battery...... But if you first turn your Clie off then use the hold button. Will it still affect the battery?

I think the problem they had with the hold button was more than just that.
I'm curious about this "Beam Enable" discussion...I'm going to give a try and see what happens.
Thanks for the tips folks.

If you turn off your Clie and then press the hold button, it won't affect battery life, one of it's functions is to safe your Clie from turning on in your pocket. But if you do it the other way around, your Clie will be dead in just a few of hours.

I turned Beam Enable off on my T615C and it made a significant improvement in battery life. I avearge about the same amount of use every day and end up at about the 50% or less mark. Today, after turning beam enable last night, my battery indicator is above 80%.:D

You got it.
David:)
I set the "beam receive" to "off" under the preferences. What is happening is that sometimes it mysteriously comes "on"! I've just checked it again, and it's still off. However, a few minutes ago the thing was on. Anybody else have this problem?

I've also tried turning off beam enable, and it helps a bit - thanks for the tip.
When I use my T675C for more than 30 mins I still go through 50% of my battery.
I was wondering if anyone has tried under-clocking to extend battery life?
I really don't need 66 MHz for most applications, and I've noticed that my partner's SJ30 (33 MHz) has a much longer battery life.

I believe I read somewhere its a bug in the Palm OS - the beam recieve returns to ON when you hotsync. There are a few hacks available (Ive seen them somewhere) that correct this.

That's a feature, mate! You can get an app called BeamOff that will turn the beam receive off after hotsyncs so that it stays off. I use it on my T665C w/o a problem.

This is the problem with the Hold switch, as I understand it.
If you turn off your Clie and then use the Hold switch, an alarm will still turn it on. However, the screen will not come on to tell you about the alarm. Then the Clie will not turn off again after the "Auto-off After" time. Your battery will eventually drain all the way.
The Hold switch is really only supposed to be used for listening to music with the screen turned off.
Take care,
Rolando

Unless you are using OmniRemote in training mode, you should still be able to use it as a remote with 'Beam Receive' off. IOW, 'Beam Receive' should affect only incoming IR, not outgoing.

a friend of mine told me that when you using (backlight on) & MP3 together and the battery just last for 15 minutes. Is it correct?

Nope. Sony rates it at 1.5 hours, not 15 minutes.

Is it really works when you disable the "beam receive" ?

All beam receive does is keep you from getting files by IR from other devices. Keeping it off has very little if any effect on your battery.

I've had my 665 for about 9 months and have not had a battery failure as of yet. I'm gonna get a car charger for the heck of it!

Same track record here w/my T665 over 9 months. I just sprung for a Sony battery extender/recharger (4AA battery type) anyway just in case...

I've read how people disable their "hold" button on their CLIE, does the 615 C have that?
Can I replace the pathetic battery myself or do I need to take it someplace to get a new one?
My CLIE is about a year and a half old, so I assume it's not under warranty anymore...am I basically hosed as far as the battery goes?

The T615C does not have a hold button. I used to use StayOffHack for that purpose.
The battery is not user-replaceable.
Warranty is one year.
