i've called all the:
Comp USA's
Best Buy's
Circuit City's
and they have none
i live on the west coast of florida and the stores are NOT that close to me. when i call i really feel (most of the time) that they have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about what i am talking. therefore, i am not sure if i will ever know they arrive without making the drive over there myself.
will they ever be in OFFICE DEPOT?
or STAPLES?
they don't know that either
very frustrating
and unlike many of you folks, i have to really hold THIS particular PDA in my hand BEFORE purchasing it
i don't always feel that way about electronic purchases
but for some reason i do about this one

I feel your pain. The places I have talked to really seem to have no clue what the UX50 is. And I also think this is one device I'd like to see in person. I have a feeling that once I finally get my hands on one I'm going to like it a lot, but the drastic change in form factor is something I want to make sure I am comfortable with before spending that kind of money.

I live in Orlando and I called all those places too. I finally talked to an intelligent person at the CompUSA in Altamonte and they had some. He was also able to tell me that the South Orlando store also had them, so I stopped by on the way home from work. They didn't have any out on display so I tried to find someone to help me. It took me a couple tries but I finally found someone who knew what I was talking about, and he brought one out.
Dispite the fact that I looked at many pictures of the UX50 on the web, I was still surprised at the actual size. It is very very tiny. I presently have the NX80V so I'm used to that size. The unit was completely dead and needed to be charged so I wasn't able to see the screen. I won't go any further because there are many reviews already posted.
To get back to your question Office Depots don't carry Clies so they won't have the UX. Call the CompUSA in Altamonte Springs and ask them to check your local store for you. Keep in mind that I called them yesterday and the guy told me that they didn't carry that model and if they did it would be at least a week before they got them. Make sure you talk to someone in the PDA department.
good luck

i appreciate that info. so, are you saying that you will NOT be getting the UX50 because of it's "tiny tiny" size? also.... MY office depot has CLIE's but isn't sure they will be carrying this one.
for the record, the office depot here carries the:
SJ22
SJ33
TG50
NZ90
not sure why this isn't standard in all office depots. i'm talking about the one on Missouri Avenue in Clearwater, by the way
thanks again

the other reason for wanting to buy one in person is because i want to get the aftermarket warranty for 2 years. i'm a pediatrician and will be using this device in my office and am afraid that one day some kid will get hold of it and do some damage to the screen. when buying one online, whether from www.sonystyle.com or wherever, i find it hard, if not impossible to buy the aftermarket warranty.

Sorry about the misinformation at Office Depot. I remember calling one of the Orlando Office Depots and that's what they told me. Maybe it's only Orlando.
Right now I'm thinking that I won't buy one, but that could change once I see one powered up. It's just that I absolutely love my NX80V. I think that Sony has perfected that design. It is after all the 3rd generation of that form factor and they've learned from their mistakes and listened to what users want. Plus I've only had it for about a month. It's brand new.
You have to seriously and objectively think about how you will use your Clie. I think there are 2 types of people:
1) those who prefer hand writing (Graffiti, Decuma)
2) those who prefer a keyboard.
I myself prefer hand writing, thus the portrait mode of the NX is better. Easy to hold with one hand and write with the other. If you prefer the keyboard, the landscape mode of the UX is better. I think it's harder to hold the UX with one hand and write with the other.
I'm an engineer and believe it or not I use the camera a lot for work, so the 1.3 M is great and that LED comes in real handy in the dark. The other factors that I see as a negative are the smaller screen and the lack of the 4 buttons (datebook, contacts, todo, memo) although some people say that you can program the number buttons. The placement of the jog dial and back button also don't lend it self to one hand operation.
If I was to think logically as an engineer, I would never buy the first version of anything because there are always improvements to be made and you learn from your design mistakes once the consumers get their hands on it. You get a real world test of what works and what doesn't. Of course I say this but I always buy gadgets when they first come out.
I was going to refer you to eCost.com because they had them in stock for same day delivery, they don't charge tax and they offer an extended warranty, but I see that they are no longer in stock. I've used them and they are great.
Hope you find one in your area and absolutely fall in love with it.

I went to the CompUsa in Orlando and they had one on the shelf. I too was completely amazed at how small the actual device was! They had a working model next to the NX80 and I could immediately tell that, for me personally, I would much rather the NX80 screen size than the UX50. I dont know if it is because I wear glasses, but the font was so small that I had real difficulty reading the screen on the default font setting sometimes. The OS seemed responsive enough, the only thing that seemed slow was the Clie Demo that comes on the unit. I do not know if the graphics are suppose to pop up that slow but they were going at a snail rate on the unit I held. Wifi connected very easily to the store Wifi in CompUsa and the speed was actually very good. I tested netfront by going to MSN which I figured would be a pretty heavy traffic as well as complex site and it loaded quickly. Piscel was ridicilously fast, but its proably this way on all the Clies so I wont go too much into that. This is definately a marvel to behold but make sure to see it before you drop down 700 dollars. It is certainly not for everyone.

I have 2 ux50's coming today via Fedex.
I tried to cancel my order with sony style after they delayed shipment. Then I purchased the unit from Ecost.com.
Let me know if anyone is interested..
