1. Can anyone tell me, SPECIFICALLY, what files either of these programs backs up (and restores correctly) that the other does not? Do they really, REALLY both back up everything 100%?

2. Does anyone have any specific issues with either of these besides "it crashes my system"?

Thanks and my empathy for our forum home.

JBB was very good from what I understand from a couple users I know. I use only MS Backup and I manually copy the MS to my hard drive.

If you are running OS5, neither program may work right. Check the fine print first. Your profile didn't specify what model you are using.

JBBackup does not work on OS5 devices, and the image backup for it doesn't work on the SJ series. However, for models that it does work on, including the NR, N, and S-series, it works great!! After a hard reset, I just copy the 3 JBBackup files back to RAM (or use versions stored in Flash), run it, and hit Menu-Image-Restore. The restore takes 10-15 seconds, after which it does a soft reset. When it turns on, everything is restored exactly as it was before except for the skin of my VG area on my NR is displaying as the system default. I have to go to Photoskin (or whichever skinning app I'm using at the time) and do a restore, after which my system is 100% restored. On the NR-devices that it works on, the system is 100% restored after the initial step.

I've tried BBVFS a little bit, and I know there are some files that it can't backup; mainly shortcuts used by LIII and LX, though there may be some others.

Hope this helps.

I also use JBB and think it is the best out there IMHO.

JBBackup crashes my NR70 all the time, usually after it finishes a backup, requiring a soft reset. Others haven't reported this problem, so I guess it's just me, but I haven't been able to isolate the problem. That said, as a tribute to JBB, I continue to use it anyway. A rom image restory is flawless, with everything in the same state it was in at the time of backup. I've sometimes had trouble restoring with BBVFS; the file by file restore for some reason sometimes resulted in conflicts and more crashes. Also, the rom image backup takes up significantly less space on the memory stick than a file by file backup.

Has anyone else crashes with an NR70?

Which version of JBB do you have? I'm using v1.6.3. Older versions had a conflict with PiDirect, where if you were in a PiDirect-enabled app when the backup started, it would try to send you back to the app after the backup was over, and it wouldn't exist since PiDirect turns itself off for the backup. That was fixed a few versions ago, and it's the only thing I've heard of that sounds like your situation.

BB VFS doesn't work for me on the shortcut files. It just hangs and I have to reset. I'm using the freebie.

Mmm....I am using BackupBuddy VFS and it seems to be working however I have not done a hard reset to see how it restores my clie.

Yup, I'm also using v. 1.6.3. Oh well. I don't have the patience to track down the problem systematically.

I use PiBackup II for VFS backup. I like it very much, and find it to be very fast at restoring my system after a hard reset. PIB doesn't handle LIII or LX shortcuts either. The trick is to use a file manger such as FileZ to replace << charecter in the shortcut with a _ (underscore). Other charecters may work also. PIB can then backup and restore the shortcuts properly. Windows also does not recognize the << charecter, so you need to change it if you're coping shortcuts from your MS to a windows folder.

RLDUNN & WNM, thanks very much for your detailed responses. These products both appear to be very good so I was pretty sure the issues with either would be subtle. On the other hand using restore experiments of valuable information is not very smart when you have smart people who are willing to share their painfully acquired information. Looks like JBBACKUP does the job 100% if you aren't in the "it crashes my system" category.

As a sidebar, my current CLIE is a NR70 and it seems to crash much more often and with a much higher "hard reset" percentage than my old N710C with essentially the same programs on each. You don't suppose all that fancy virtual grafitti support introduces any instability.

I never have a hard reset on mine unless I'm testing out beta software, and I have an NR70V, so I don't think you can blame the VG area. I bet the problems are due to software that isn't written properly but still had settings that worked on your old Clie and not the new one. Who knows, though, unless you can figure out something systematic causing the problem.

Check out Botzam Backup. Works perfectly on my T-415, never crashes, it encrypts (optional), has timed backup, and compresses (optional).

Another pleased JBBackup user here. I've only gotten to use the app once after a "test" hard reset, but it restored all of my T615's files flawlessly. I definitely feel a lot more comfortable now should the real thing come along!

I have tried a couple of test hard resets myself and it looks like everything is OK. I get about 4 or 5 "can't restore because (various names) can not be deleted". This worries me a little.
