View Full Version : Problems with digitizer after being on an airplane?

Anyone else have a problem with the digitizer after being on an airplane? I recently flew from Phoenix to Denver, and once I was in the air, the digitizer was not responding very well. It would take a few hits before it would register. After landing and getting to my hotel, it stopped responding at all. I put it away, since I was very pissed and didn't want to really break it. I decided later to play with it a little more, and found if I apply pressure just above to up/down button, it would work. Another day later it seemed to work fine again.
My Clie is the T665C and is only about 3-4 weeks old. Is this something that happens frequently, or should I attemt to get a new one, so this doesn't happen again.
I fly quite a bit and use my T665 on the plane and haven't experienced this problem. Perhaps you should run through the digitizer set-up in "prefrences" again to make sure it has been aligned properly from the beginning.

or maybe the cabin pressure on your plane wasn't quite right, and the pressure on the device made it not work totally right...it's a long shot, but the first thing that came to my mind

I fly regularly with mine w/o a problem. Judging from your words above, I think that you may have a problem with that specific device between the digitizer screen and the one below it (e.g., not sealed/glued properly) and should probably exchange the device.

There was a thread on this very same topic before the "Great Database Crash" here... it never found an exact reason for the problem, but it was reported by several other people. The best guess at the time was a cabin pressure issue, where your Clie's screen probably has too tight a seal, so that air can't escape very quickly during sudden pressure changes. When the cabin pressure in the plane changes suddenly, the layers in the screen aren't able to adjust at the same time, making a "bubble" of your entire screen or sucking all the layers together, just enough to render it unresponsive to tapping.
If you plan to fly often enough, I'd take tanker_bob's suggestion and trade it for a new device, and hope that they didn't seal the screen as well in that one. It seems to be pretty hit-or-miss though, and the only way to test it is to actually fly with it (or find yourself a pressurized room somewhere :)).
Cheers.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did a search here and a few other places, and didn't see anything like that. Of course as spradlinb pointed out a lot if info was lost in the database crash. That is why I posted my question. I will see if I can get it replaced. I fly a lot and never had a problem with previous PDA's I have owned. And I certainly don't want to waste a day or two waiting for the pressure to equalize every time I do fly.

I have had the same problem you are talking about. My T415 would become unresponsive every time I flew, and then would go back to normal after landing. It didn't seem to matter which airlines, which type of plane etc - it happened each time (I don't fly that often, so the first time it happened I thought I had done something to the screen).
I haven't flown since getting my T665 so I don't know if I will have the same issue. I will be pretty leery of using it during the flight, but I will probably try it. If the screen is unresponsive next time then I think I will return mine as enough people responded to the first thread on this issue by indicating that they did not have problems.
Cheers,
