As people may recall, Brayder promised on their web site to release an OS5 support by the end of January. I emailed Brayder a couple of days ago and got an answer today:
We anticipate a release for OS5 within the next two weeks.
Please continue to check our website at www.Brayder.com
for updates.
Well, we shall see...

I've personally communicated with the Brayder company through email and through my experience, they're quite supportive.

I love Brayder products, have used them for years. It's a pity it takes Brayder so long to develop OS5 support.

I havent seen any good info about it on the Brayder website, but sometimes you people seem to get info on such things before it gets there.
I cant wait to be rid of these sony crap-apps.

Come on Brayder, we need salvation!

02-21-2003, 03:50 PM
I wouldn't count on a class action lawsuit being successful. It DOES have 16MB of RAM; whether it's all available is irrelevant to that claim. And they did mention in several locations, such as their web site and in some of the documentation, that only 11MB was available.

What about "Welcome"?
It shows up in my LauncherX card info as 713K. Can it go?
contempt
02-21-2003, 03:58 PM
I thought about 'welcome' as well. However, that file actually contains the four dot sony animation that displays after you soft-reset the palm as well as the intro digitizer. Seems like a dangerous file to remove.

Does anyone know if you can remove Datebook (when it's possible) and still have the info entered into Agendus or Datebk5? I know they are using the same database and I'm afraid if I hit delete I'll loose my info! Also...what can you tell me about the flash files listed by contempt? I see them on my clie and don't know what they are for?! Wouldn't it be nice if you could open or look at some of those files to see what they are...not just the .swf files but many of the orphan files I probably have left over from installing and removing programs.
jmg_NX21
02-21-2003, 05:01 PM
Your datebook uses datebookDB.prc in RAM. Your data should still be on your CLIE.
Back up before you do delete anything... in case of Emergency.
I'll probably BACK up/copy the files in ROM before I begin to experiment...
DOES this really VOID the warranty?
contempt
02-21-2003, 05:27 PM
I'm not sure if it voids the warranty, but the previous version of JackSprat came with a great backup program. I used it on my N710 and delted the datebook, to do list, and address book, since i used agendus. All info was intact. Then when I got my NX, I ran the JackSprat backup program and reinstalled all the Sony factory apps perfectly and sold the unit on ebay. Worked like factory new.
Can't wait for the new versions.

It LOOKS like it's true, but I deleted the Welcome app on all of my other Clies that I had Jacksprat on, and after a hard reset, it would go directly to the 3 digitizing steps (the first of the 4 steps is actually a practice step that has no effect on the digitizer).

Better than that, really, since there's already 4MB of unused space in FLASH, at least on the US version of the NX-60. That's enough room for every program I use on a weekly basis, so only the really rare stuff, or stuff that won't run in ROM will need to be in RAM or on MS.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but does that mean, that if sony doesn't release os upgrades, and we have a few smart people who can grab the os code from another pda or another pda's upgrade, modify it to work for our device, and then use jackflash/sprat to add it to our device's and have a better os.
I understand that the os would have to be designed for our processor cause if os6 or whatever other os runs on different processor coding it would just screw things up if you tried it.
Hmmmmm.
Well we tried with the cf drivers, we could try for this too
Makes you wonder of the possibilities, the lawsuits, and whatever other fun you could get out of it

Thanks for the info!
rldunn
03-09-2003, 12:09 PM
Their current upgrade policy is you get free upgrades for a certain period; I believe it's 6 months. After that, you need to repurchase at full price. I'm probably just outside of the 6-month window, like I was last time I needed to upgrade :)

03-09-2003, 03:24 PM
Well if they continue to make people wait then everyone should be outside the 6
month policy and they can then sock it ot everyone...
Ok correct me if I am wrong...
In January they said they had a JackFlsh version working in house for OS5???
And they were WAITING until they perfected there JackSprat product for OS5???
Hmmmmmmm....
What I have heard is that they cant get JackSprat to work on a OS5 so the wait will
only force people to PAY $$$$$...
Good business, or Abusive of there loyal customer base which paid there way to
being in this position to begin with?
When I first purchased JackFlash there was no limitation as to future upgrades.
What I mean is that, all future upgrades were to be FREE to existing customers...
Only in recent years (past 1.5 or 2) with other companies charging for upgrades has
this changed so that there upgrade products have become chargeable...
What say you???
contempt
03-09-2003, 03:49 PM
As a correction, they stated they couldn't get JackSprat to work correctly on Sony OS5 machines, not Palm OS5 machines.
They're definitely trying more to market these to the TT audience and not really to us. Sony support has always been available after the normal development. That's not to say they don't like us, they're just being business savvy.
I think what they do is incredible and they have always tried to perfect their problems. However, they are slow. They should at least allow free upgrades for all of us who have been waiting. We just have to be patient. You know it's gonna be good.

Same here, I deleted Welcome w/o problems. You still can go to the Digitizer by tapping Prefs and select Digitizer from the drop-down category list.

I deleted welcome and demo also on the NR, everything worked fine.
On the other subject, upgrades, yea, I think that I might be over the 6 month free upgrade, I hope not though, maybe they will give a different price, (lower) for old customers?
rldunn
03-09-2003, 11:43 PM
Don't get me wrong; I would love to get a free upgrade. And I would normally be pissed at a company that had a policy like this. But keep in mind that this software is like no other software out there. It's not like an app or a game that is the same software that runs on many different types of hardware. This app has to change for every new piece of hardware that's released. In this way, it's almost more like hardware than software, and you wouldn't expect to get a free hardware upgrade. So, I'll cut them some slack here. If everyone got free upgrades, they would eventually run out of money and wouldn't have any incentive to make this work on all the new hardware we buy, and if they weren't around, we really would be left with only hardware options.

Dripps

jbray that's not nice! They will release it when the have the software ready, don't you think? After all, selling this software keeps them alive and I expect they'd like to start selling this to all us anxious users ASAP. I applaud them for making sure this software works properly and won't screw up our Clies or create many dissatisfied users. If it was so easy we'd have Jack Flash, Jack Splat and CF drivers already!

03-10-2003, 08:56 AM
If they cared about their customer base they wouldn't keep us in the dark!!! I've been in contact with them since November, and the contact has been the same every time. "We anticipate the release within the next 2 weeks". It's now 5 months later, and we still have nothing. I personally believe that they are waiting until the free upgrade period for their last version expires, so they can charge everybody full price for this version. It doesn't matter to me, because I haven't bought the current version, but to those who have, they are out of luck. I'm just sick of the lies they keep posting, just as I'm sick of the lies from Saddam, I thought it was a good analogy!!!!!!!!!

Although I'm not related to Bradyer in any way, it is my belief that this is a small company (I wouldn' be surprised if there was a single man handling the website, programming, public relation, etc...), so the more time they spend on posting news on the website or answering questions of impatient customers, the less time they spend on programming and testing.
I agree with you, having more info about the release date would be nice, but if you'd ever tried to write some decent program, you'd know that this can be a long and tedious task, especially if you have to test your program on mutlitple devices.
As for me, I'm as impatient as anyone here, but I didn't even mail them to know the release date of the OS5 version, for the reason mentionned above.
And the price is especially low for such a nice program, so I have the feeling that they largely deserve the few bucks they ask for JackFlash/JackSprat. I've already bought an upgrade for their product, and will certainly do so gladly as soon as the OS5 version is ready. Come on, man, we're talking about a $10 program for your $600 device, so take a deep breath, relax and do something pleasant to keep you happy while they work on the OS5 version! :):):)
davidy
03-11-2003, 05:56 AM
$10 is a very small sum for the extra flash memory that we get. Thry may even have an upgrade price for existing clients. I wait eagerly.:)
Replied via Nexio S160!
contempt
03-11-2003, 10:34 AM
Yeah the price is low for what you get. I'll definitely pay again if I have too (although I don't want to).
But what you're saying about time taken away from posting from the website, that's ridiculous. All it takes is one sentence stating, "we're delayed, wait another month," etc. They should at least realize so many people are waiting and to give us a sense of peace. Then again, they probably want all the hits to their site with eager people like me checking everyday!

Did you check the application size in ROM, using something like McFile or FileZ? It seems that you probably only looked at the databases (which contain your memos, addresses, agenda entries) and not at the executable themselves, which are indeed the size reported by contempt
If you look at the right file, the useless Clie Memo.prc takes about 345K. If the OS5 version of JS/JF is available, Clie Memo is one app that can be move to MS since it works just fine in MS even using OS4.1.
