View Full Version : NX70 System Rebuild Saves Upgrade

Just thought I'd share my experience of a rebuild of my NX70 after 10 months of use.....

I was down to 1M free so decided after 10 months of loading and unloading software it was time for a rebuilt...... so after an MS Backup and a sharp intake of breath I did the dirty and performed a hard reset.......

With all my apps burnt safely to a CD I then went about reloading and installing 1-by-1, I don't use and 3rd party launchers or flash utils so this was pretty straight forward...............

Anyways... to cut a long story short(ish) I reinstalled 21 of tha apps and updates that I use, this process took about 3 hours in total with interim backups and hotsyncs..... et voila a now fully functioning system with 4M of free space.....

So if you have been running your device for sometime and now have all the apps that you need loaded I would seriously recommend a total rebuild.... there are loads of files that just can't be deleted or the id is so vague you can't be too sure if you should delete it or not...........

Had the device for 10 months, use it to sync with my Office Notes system, my home email and internet via wireless......... only an NX70 but this process has given it a new lease of life and given no reason to upgrade until new devices hit the market.

 :D  :p :)

I agree with you.
There are some NVG (not very good) programmers that create dbs with different CreatID and when you delete an application there may be something left behind...

So you do not have to go through this process again I suggest using Uninstall Manager as prevention. It is designed specifically to avoid the process described above while working in the background quite flawlessly.

tried this app and it got me up to 2.2M free......... fresh build got me backup to 4M free.......... as stated by LockSoft not every developer conforms and thus uninstall manager can't be 100% accurate.....

Is there any better alternatives than Uninstall Manager? Say you have a fresh NX70 to start with, what program can you install to avoid a rebuild like this?.

To make this conclusion you would have had to have started with the same apps installed and used Uninstall Manager for all the same apps installed there after. Uninstall Manager is a preventative measure and not an "after the fact" application. So could you elaborate on the exact comparison as it might help the developer meet our needs if this study has been done by you extremely accurately.

Uninstall Manager is the absolute best out there. Mjhamilton needs to clarify his findings as I'm not sure that his comparison is a 100% accurate dipiction of Uninstall Manager's capabilities. It has even added the Sandbox Option which tracks ALL files created by installation of apps, regardless of the ID that they are under.

Hrrrumph!!!

I am the best unistall/install manager for my Clie, bar none!!!

All it takes, is to pay attention to detail, not very difficult at all.

If you just use JackFlash, you get a WHOLE bunch more memory free! I was almost maxed out (both on my MS and in RAM), installed JackFlash, and now have nearly 7 MB of free RAM (6993 K). Who needs to spend all the time re-installing when you can just stash apps in flash?

Anyway, my $0.02

fair points.. but when i got my NX 70 most of the apps above were not available and thus I couldn't start as I meant to go on............ however I have taken this all on board and now after this rebuilt installed uninstall manager so i will see how it goes........ as stated it is no good unless you have it inplace from day one!!!

.. as for the other point made I have installed all the same apps as before so i am comparing apple with apples as they like to say!!..........................

The Sandbox feature of UM doesn't work if you install an app that requires a reset, but otherwise is pretty cool - especially since when you exit the sandbox you're shown what files are being written to RAM.  But I'm not sure how it deals with files moved to flash memory.  I just got the new JackFlash for my NX80 and while I was transferring apps to flash I kept getting a message about deleting associated files.  Does this mean that since the main app is now in flash that it's no longer being monitored for changes?

Otherwise, I've been pretty happy with it.  My only complaint is that sometimes the files associated with an app don't actually belong to that app.  I just use the Palm delete function in those cases.

InWatch Uninstaller is another choice, but you have to make sure you take a "snapshot" before the installation, and another after installation.  It tracks the changes make between snapshots.

I freed up over 1MB of RAM just by deleting the unused prefrences in FileZ
