Hello All-

I've been lurking here for several weeks and have just upgraded to a NX80! I love all the great info here and just wanted to thank everyone!! I just got it charged up last night and have barely put it down. Everything seems great except one problem: I installed the new software on my pc (I upgraded from a NR70v) and everything seems good except one program. It's a calculator program called 'PowerOne' When I launch the program the organizer freezes and I have to reset. Does anyone know if this program is not 5.2 compatable? Maybe I should delete and re-install.

Thanks again everyone!

Chris

First of all, congratulations on your purchase! I just got my NX80 last Saturday (upgraded from an NR70V as well) and I absolutely love it -- no regrets whatsover. Between the vastly superior camera, screen, and multimedia capabilities -- to say nothing of all the WiFi stuff -- I'm in PDA nirvana. I've finally retired my HP568, and am now a "one" PDA guy. No more moonlighting on the dark side when I need to watch a movie or play a Flash file. Now, if Sony would just hurry up and send my KB100, I might be able to "retire" my laptop as well...

With respect to your problem with PowerOne, I'm not sure what to say. It works just fine on my unit, and no, the problem definitely doesn't lie with the OS, since the NX80 uses 5.0. Besides, as far as I know, PowerOne works with both OS4 and 5, so there shouldn't be a problem with it, even for those with 5.2 on their devices. If deleting and reinstalling the app doesn't work for you, I'm not sure what to tell you.

This might be a job for Larry...

Congrats!!! I upgraded from an NR70V also.

PowerOne should work, though. Try deleting and reinstalling. Is it the PowerOne that came in the software bundle??

Adam and Nickster-

Thanks for the posts!! What all did you two do when you upgraded? I've read alot of post but would love to hear from people who are upgrading from the same unit. What have you found to be improvements? additional software?

Thanks!!

I upgraded from the NR also, and it was totally worth it. I love the better camera, and the video recorder. I was very surprised by the quality of the voice recorder. It's very sensitive in quiet situations, but I also use it to take relatively distortion-free recordings of a loud rock band in a small room, which I never would have thought it could do.

One of my favorite features is a simple one: the sound button on the status bar, and the mute checkbox it brings up. It's so easy to tell at a glance that the Clie is silenced, and to change it back and forth quickly. There's so much else that's better about it, the great screen, the tablet mode buttons, of course. But I'm sure you're discovering all that too.

Some suggestions for replacement apps for those that no longer work:
(unfortunately in many cases where the OS4 apps were free, the only OS5 ones are shareware)
* Graffiti1 ---> TealScript (or get someone who has an NX60/70 to give you the graffiti files, but TealScript is also customizable)
* SkinMgr ---> PhotoSkin
* X-Master ---> TealMaster
* EasyLaunch ---> TealLaunch

My only major complaints/disappointments so far:
* The infamous squishy digitizer -- you'll adapt, but the problem is still there
* No JackFlash (yet?), and no JackSprat
* OmniRemote beaming distance is about a foot, and no OS5 alternatives
* PhotoEditor is not as full-featured in its drawing/text tools as CliePaint, but if you didn't use it as constantly as I did to make notes on photos, that may not matter so much.

But overall I'm very pleased with it, and as more apps get updated, it can only get better.:)

---EDIT---
OK, my comment about JackFlash was so three hours ago. Looks like the beta may be out now!

I agree with everything up there except for the remote. Why don't you use the Clie Remote Commander. I know it doesn't have every brand (Zenith), but the range is very good (around 15-20 feet for me).

True dat, P DaWg... Initially, I held off upgrading to the NX from my NR because I didn't think it was really all that much of an improvement (particularly the NX70V). Figured I'd be better off waiting for the UX. Well, now that I took the plunge and am fully immersed in my new NX80, all I can say is WOW! Yes, a year (and a half) makes quite a difference. Better screen, MUCH better camera, WiFi, XScale PXA265, OS5... And I love the new design -- looks like industrial art to these aging eyes.

The JackFlash news is just the icing on the cake... Now I really have no regrets about passing on the UX.

PS - Where's my KB100!?! C'mon, Sony... Get off your duffs and start shipping 'em again!

I Love it!! Camera, voice recorder and the over-all design improvements are great. Do any of you guys (and girls) watch movies on your NX? If so how and with what level of quality? I thought I saw a post regarding watching movies on your NX - how? Is there any where near enough storage, even on CF, or enough battery life?

The Clie Remote program has great range for my TV and VCR, but it can't control any kind of cable boxes, so I still need OmniRemote or some programable app to change channels.

Watching movies on the NX is a breeze. Yes, it can play mpeg1 files without any conversion, but in my experience, their framerate is still too slow. Using the Image Converter to translate them into .mqv files makes for almost seamless videos. Presently, I've converted the original South Park pilot, as well as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and they both play beautifully. I have yet to sit down and watch the entire Harry Potter flick, but at 50% brightness, I have every reason to believe that I would be able to watch the entire movie and still have juice to spare. A quick note, though. Since I'm running Harry off the CF card (512MB), I was able to convert it at the highest quality setting. If I wanted to fit the entire movie on my 128MB MemStick (which can be done), I would have to sacrifice some of the quality.

If video is your thing, be sure to check out the Video forums... That's how I figured out how to use my NX80 to the max.

I upgraded from a T665C! Feels bulky at first, but now it's awsome. One thing I still dont like though is the in built kb. feels too small for any real typing....

Mine works with an Scientific Atlanta (Adelphia) cable box . . . thanks to the RMC Enhancer Yahoo group. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RMCEnhancer/) A VERY kind soul actually created the add-inn file FOR ME to make my remote work with the cable box. They do have instructions posted on how to do it, of course.

Highly recommend that group!

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I knew about the group, but for some reason never thought to check, or to try to do it myself. Unfortunately a quick search revealed that my cable box (Jerrold/General Instrument) uses some kind of [insert technical mumbo-jumbo here] that would make it very hard to write the file. If I'm not mistaken (and I very well might be), it uses a protocol that's not built in to the RMC app already, and as of yet there's no way to add new ones.

It makes me wonder what kind of cable box I would get if I upgraded to digital cable, and if I could write the definition for it.

Sounds like Sony is not the only ones using the proprietory stuff....:)
