View Full Version : Lot of questions about the NX80...

Hi!

I have ordered an NX80 (I live in Europe, that model is not available yet there, but I managed to order it in the US, have it shipped to a friend of mine and then shipped again where I live) and I am waiting for it... As owner of a Palm m505, I have a number of questions to ask :-)

1) MS/CF cards are seen as additional memory or just storage space? In other words, can I install and run applications from the cards?

2) Is any third party tool such as MsMount required? I know I need the Eruware Driver to fully exploit a CF card

3) Access time to MS/CF cards compared to main memory? Is there a noticeable difference or not? With my Palm it is rather slow...

4) The NX80 has 32 Mbytes, but AFAIK only 16(11) Mbytes are available. Is there any tool such as JackFlash/JackSprat to force the system to use the additional 16 Mbytes in a different way?

5) AFAIK (again) NX80 ROM is flash-able. Does anyone knows about OS replacement (e.g. Linux ports, such as the ones available for PocketPC)?

6) Backward compatibility with 4.x PalmOs applications?

7) I have a GPS unit for the m505 (NavMan GPS500) and the related software SmartPath/SmartCity. Does anyone know whether the software can be used on the NX80 as well?

8) Battery life? I have seen rather different feedbacks about battery duration

Sorry for this long list, and thanks in advance for any answer!

Cheers,

Saruman

Hi back!

Congrats on your NX80v!

1) MS/CF cards are seen as additional memory or just storage space? In other words, can I install and run applications from the cards?

Yes you can install and run apps from the CF in NX80. For multimedia apps like the Audio/MoviePlayer, patched versions of these apps need to be installed to read Mp3s/Movies from the CF Card.

2) Is any third party tool such as MsMount required? I know I need the Eruware Driver to fully exploit a CF card

For NX80v, there's no need for a third party driver. You only need to install patched versions of the Audio/MoviePlayer.

3) Access time to MS/CF cards compared to main memory? Is there a noticeable difference or not? With my Palm it is rather slow...

Of course CF/MS access will be slower compared to access speed of main memory. But with OS 5 and the 200mhz intel PXA263 chip, the access speed of CF/MS is already much much faster than the old palm models.

4) The NX80 has 32 Mbytes, but AFAIK only 16(11) Mbytes are available. Is there any tool such as JackFlash/JackSprat to force the system to use the additional 16 Mbytes in a different way?

JackFlash now supports the NX80/73v!!!!

5) AFAIK (again) NX80 ROM is flash-able. Does anyone knows about OS replacement (e.g. Linux ports, such as the ones available for PocketPC)?

Nopee....ROM is locked by sony even though its supposed to be flash from...if there's going to be a OS upgrade, it's going to have to come from Sony...

6) Backward compatibility with 4.x PalmOs applications?

Yes, most OS4 apps are compatible because the Palm OS5 runs an emulator for OS4 programs...but some programs that are too backward may still not work with the Clie...

7) I have a GPS unit for the m505 (NavMan GPS500) and the related software SmartPath/SmartCity. Does anyone know whether the software can be used on the NX80 as well?

I can't answer this question..but maybe if you purchase the GPS car cradle by Sony, it may be be possible...but then again, it'll come with its own GPS software as well?

8) Battery life? I have seen rather different feedbacks about battery duration

Batttery life of the NX80 is the best of all the CLIEs I have ever used...look at my signature to see which clies I have previously owned... :D

Sorry for this long list, and thanks in advance for any answer!

Not a problem! :D

Thanks!

I hope it will arrive soon... I do not like the fact the ROM is locked by Sony, after having seen Linux installed on PocketPC I think it is a valid replacement of Windows CE (well... I am not a Microsoft fan :-)), but you can't have everything.

There is a lot of good info in the thread below that will pay dividends many times over.

Congratulations Saruman!
I have to agree with your choice as I have done the same (ordered a NX80V while living in Europe)!! Unfortunately it has not shipped yet, the order is still in process :(
Where did you buy it and how long did it take to cross the ocean?

Thanks!

I purchased the NX80V and a 512 Mbytes CF card at amazon (www.amazon.com) last Friday. It has been shipped and should arrive at the US address within this week. Once there, it will be shipped where I live - so by mid September I should receive it, hopefully. The only problem may be the battery charger, I hope it will accept European voltage settings.

The NX80V is sold by amazon at 539 USD, approx. 500 EUR.

Saruman

Congrats on your purchase! Ricleo seems to have covered most of your questions, but I would like to elaborate on a few things.

1) MS/CF cards are seen as additional memory or just storage space? In other words, can I install and run applications from the cards?

2) Is any third party tool such as MsMount required? I know I need the Eruware Driver to fully exploit a CF card
If you're talking about running apps and not just MP3s and movies and stuff, you'll probably want a better launcher to make the transition from stuff in RAM vs. stuff on the card seamless. The regular launcher still can't mix your card-stored apps with the ones in RAM. ZLauncher would be my recommendation, as it allows you to do pretty much anything with an app on the card that you could do in RAM. On top of that, it's a great launcher and file manager, etc.

Just to confirm, it's 16MB available, not 11, because all the built-in apps (including Netfront and Picsel and all the multimedia stuff) are in ROM, so you get the whole 16MB to fill up. The other 16MB are used to store information being used by the current app, like a web page in Netfront, so if you've filled up your usable RAM, it still has another 16MB to work with inside that app, and you won't get "page too large" errors.

The NX80 has 32MB of flash ROM. I believe I've heard estimates that about 7MB should be empty. The kind of chip it uses can be locked, but we haven't gotten any confirmation one way or the other that it is. The makers of JackFlash are working on it, and AFAIK they haven't yet said it's impossible. It might very well be impossible, but it's not over yet. JackSprat doesn't work with OS5 at all, so even if they get access to Flash, you can only put stuff in, not take stuff out.

Enjoy your NX80!:)

...
Enjoy your NX80!:)

Thanks!

On the trusty m505 I am using SilverScreen; I think the new version (3.0) has full support of hi-res models such as the NX80V... My idea was to keep SilverScreen since I am already accustomed, but I will have a look at ZLauncher as well.

Saruman

Is this a complete sentence?
What are you talking about?
Please elaborate... if JackFlash can now access the extra ROM, I'm sure we would all love to hear about it....

Thanks,

I bought my NX70 from US. It is supporting the European 220V Voltage. I only had to change the changable part of the cord that connects the wall outlet with the transformer.
