If you like torture you can get it to work in wine (so much hasstle), better still use vmware or maybe bochs if you cannot get a legal copy.......
There are mpeg encoding tools that I have tried on my SuSE box, they are rubbish.
If you find anything that can do the job, post the details

I am currently trying to do some stuff using xine, mplayer and mjpeg tools. will inform if I manage any progress.

PS wine is tedious but works, but i really need a command line based encoder. vmware and boschs is not at all posible cos i dont have root access to my lab's linux boxes(some 100 of them imagine the distributed computing possibilities)

Well, thats the combo of tools I've been using, maybe it's the distro at fault but the actual mpeg encoders dont seem to work and ones i've downloaded seem to produce a segment fault. For me, vmware is the best option.
