the UX cradle uses an AC adapter that outputs 5.2V DC..

so you could in fact wire up a simple circuit with a battery and use the cradle as a cheap/portable external battery/power supply.. all you would need is someway to plug the battery circuit into the cradle.. it looks like a propraitary sony plug but I could be wrong...

aftermarket goods anybody? a simple circut with which you could use recargeable 9V cells is going to be ahelluvalot cheaper than sonys battery, my friend did the same thing with his psion...

although these types of things tend to void warrantee

i've found Radio Shack's Adaptaplugs to be extremely useful in finding adaptors for import Sony minidisc players; i'm sure the same would be true for the UX-50.

How many milliamps (mA) is the UX-50 rated at?

adaptaplugs eh? I'll check that out..

the cradle says 2000mA, can someone with a UX battery adapter post what that says? I figure it would be better to emulate a battery with a battery than a charging cradle..

Careful!

I fried a hard drive in my mp3 player using a generic car adapter with the 'right' voltage....wrong amps! I should have paid more attention to Ohm's law in high school.

I replaced the hard drive with a bigger one anyway ;)

The UX uses the same power supply as the NR/NX series. I doubt you would find an adapter at Radio Shack. 2000MA is the rated max output of the power supply. That's enough to charge the battery and run the Clie under the worst case scenario.

Wow, 2000mA (2A) is a lot. If i remember correctly, Radio Shack's adapters only go to about 1000mA. That's what sucks about Sony's adapters - they're almost all proprietary, and they use odd voltage/current ratings to make third party power solutions harder to find.
