Good VG skin utilities?

I've made some VG skins for my NR70 and am trying to change them, but the SilkSkin Change utility doesn't seem to work. It finds my skins on the MS, and resets when I hit the set button, but the skin doesn't change. In fact, if I already have a skin in there, it gets reset to the default. Odd thing is, it works with one skin, but not any of the others, but they were all made the same way. And all work okay from Photoskin.

Everything works fine with Photoskin and Skin Manager, but I don't want to leave all the skins in RAM. I'd rather put them on the stick and load them as needed.

I tried the crs utility also, and it crashes.

How many version of SilkChange are there? I found 2 version that both say v1.0, but are different file sizes, and have different icons.

Is there a VG Skin changer, or another version of SilkChange that actually works (with skins on the MS)?

I've had the same issue, I know of no fix, or even exactly what the problem is.

And I have found yet another version of SilkChange, that still claims to be v1.0, and it also ony works with ONE of my skins.

In fact, this version only shows ONE skin available from the MS directory, even though there are around a dozen skins there.

This is so irritating. All of my skins were made the same way, with the same software.

All of the files are the same size, type, creator ID, etc.

I tried downloading a few skins from here, and they aren't recognised by Silkchange either. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT PROGRAM LOOKING FOR!?

Okay, I've been snooping around in the SilkChange program with a hex editor, and I figured out what the problem is.

I'm experimenting with a fix now... will let you know.

Hmmm... there doesn't seem to be any way to "fix" the SilkChange program, but you can fix the skin files so it will work with them.

You will need a hex editor program to do this.

Open the skin file in the editor and look at the byte at offset $3C (60th decimal byte). It will have a value of $73 (hex), which is a lower case "s". This needs to be changed to $53 (hex) upper case "S".

That's it. Save the skin file and it will now work with SilkChange from your Memory Stick.

Hmmm, editing the files seems to make them show up on the list, but they're still not loading after resets. In fact, it's bringing up the default skin after resets.

I tested yours and it's similar, although I did once get a single skin to load.

I don't like something. I've had something like 5 hard resets in the past week+, and I have a sneaking suspicion the problem lies in the recent skin changing I have been doing. I've been unable to pin it to any individual app with the tests I have run, but the timing just seems more than a coincidence.

The problem happens most often when changing apps. I'll be switching to another program, the top portion of the screen will go white (normal occurence, but not for indefinite periods) and of course the freeze, reset loop of doom occurs. I'm considering removing all of the new skins and the new skin changers (I've eliminated the app PhotoSkin from the list of culprits in a direct manner, at least). Also, it was doing this before I used a hex editor on the skins. My fear is that the new skins created with PhotoSkin are in some way flawed, resulting in hard resets. I'll test it, but if anyone has anything to offer/add, let me know.

I've been making skins with Photoskin for a week or so, and have had no such troubles with it. I just wish it had the ability to store and load the skins from the MS.

I'm currently testing by trial and error. I'm switching back to the Clie Button Tappad Silkskin and matching status skin. If it makes it a week without a hard reset, it should mean it's a problem with skins. If I still get hard resets, I'll start unloading apps one by one, from most recent additions on down, until I find the culprit.

OK, another hard reset, this time while doing a Hotsync (the last thing synced was WorldMate, which is a relatively new version, hmmm). So I'm thinking the problem lies elsewhere.
