Hi I've only had my clie for about one month, so I'm still getting used to all the arsenal of applications the clie has. One topic (which I've been reading alot about), has me a little unsure. I have a sony 256 mb memory stick pro and a 128 mb sandisk memory stick. I know I want to get the best quality movie to view on the clie and wonder if I need to update the driver so I can watch full length movies in a higher quality. I've been thinking about a 1gig compact flash, but what can the 256 sandisk handle???. p.s. I've read cliepet and pelicas posts so I am aware of whats required for compact flash as well as eurowares driver option. Furthermore as a movie viewer I've only used kinoma player so far for small vignettes.
Thanks. Jimbo.

You left out one important detail, what NX model do you have?

I use the image converter tool to convert movies for the clie. Using this, with lowest quality, I get watchable but grainy movies with the resolution dropped by a factor of 4 (ie half horizontal res, half vertical res) with pretty good sound quality. These files are about 75Meg give or take - that's about 10:1 compression from a standard VCD-quality mpeg1.
If I compress with maximum quality, I get full VCD quality resolution, very nice. These files are about 500Meg give or take - that's about 3:1 compression from standard VCD-quality.
My stats are not precise, don't tale my word for it.
I've been able to watch both high quality and low quality movies on a fairly slow compact flash card as well as on a sony memory stick (standard blue stick, not a MG or Pro) Just fine playback in both cases. I've not tried long movies on CF yet, just 1 minute ones.
Do let me know if I've missed the point of your question :)
Oh, I use the pelaca CF driver (hacked version) and the peleca movie player.

Thanks Grey actually your'e reply was very helpful!!!, I'm still figuring all of the functions out!. So to convert a dvd/svcd from my collection I'll need to convert them to vcd first?. Probably a simple question, but I am new to the clie world!. (I am able to convert vider file types). Thanks again!
To convert from DVD, I'd recommend going to VCD format first as the resolution is pretty good for displaying on the clie. Depends entriely on your DVD software of course - I use dvdx which has a bunch of preset output filters, including a vcd one so it's conveniant.
If you've already got it in SVCD, you can probably skip converting to VCD format and just go from .dat to .mpg using a vcd tool such as vcd-easy (renaming it doesn't work, just upsets the clie converter software) and then to the clie from there.

I think the thunbrule for the standard image converter output formats are: highquality-4MB/min, standard-2MB/min, long play-1MB/min. If in DVD (vob) then video and audio will need to be recompressed (many tools avail.). If in SVCD format, convert dat file to mpeg, then only sound should have to be recompressed for Image converter (much quicker).

Thanks Grey and mrbjg4, the movie conversion process is one of the few tasks I haven't put to the clie yet (the kinoma player vignettes I tried out were already converted). Will be nice to compare the quality to the kinoma player which is supposedly inferiour ( I was actually pleasantly surprised at kinomas quality). To be honest I couldn't figure out how to get image converter to work with a movie file after a few unsuccessful attempts.
