I work on a campus with a large wife-network. This is connected to a LAN with thousands of students. I'd like to play/evaluate/copy their MP3's via WIFI and an UX-50. Is it possible to access files this way? I do have doubts...

All those wives networked together could cause some havoc. ;) :D

Seriously though, there are a few options. You could set up an FTP server, and then get an FTP client from PalmGear to install on your UX. Then just copy MP3's to your Clie and play them back.
A new app was just posted today at PalmGear, and it lets you connect to Windows shares (SMB). I'm not sure how well it's works, but there is more info in this (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24424) thread. This might be even easier since you can just share a few folders in Windows and access them over the network.

Interesting... I wonder how long before an SMB (Samba) client appears for PalmOS. Would be quite handy.

Today! There was one released today. SmbMate (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=51393)

That's incredible! Freeware too. Thanks for pointing that out!

Now all we need are all those wives networked together, and we won't have to ask for another thing! :)

That looks good. It's not ideal yet, but good enough. I hope that by the time a get an UX-50 it's possible to play MP3's directly over the network. For example by mounting a directory as a virtual memorystick.

this new software SMBmate seems to have disk support but I dont know if it will mount them as virtual expansion cards or give a directory listing within the app.. can anyone test it? that would possibly facilitate wife streaming MP3 :D

For the moment you just connect a windows network and shared folder / printer...
You can send files from the palm to a folder, copy a file from the folder to the palm and some other options, that's all :)

I guess we have to wait for someone to handle Smb in a MP3 or video software (pocket tunes or Aero player) and it will be really cool ;)

You can see some pictures in here (http://www.palmspirit.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7479)

At least you can get the mp3s onto your UX50 from a network shared drive this way. Yeah, I don't think this will help facilitate streaming video, though. I'll play with it more tomorrow at work. D/Led it earlier today, but never had the time to test it out. Scary thing to me, as a SysAd is that it says you can reboot/shutdown the server with SMBMate. Kinda scary, if left in the wrong hands.

It should depend from the authorisations you give to the username / password on the network...
It should obey to the "rights" allowed by the server...

I ran some tests sing a UX-50 and WIFI and here are the results I got tranferring a 6 Mo file:

MS= Memorystick
VMS= Virtual MS (Multmedia Memory)
Network = Shared Windows Folder

Network-> VMS: 66 ko/s
Network-> MS: 73 ko/s
MS -> Network: 147 ko/s
VMS -> Network: 120 ko/s

Xav of Palmspirit (http://www.palmspirit.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=74019#74019) ran some tests using Bluetooth and he found 12 ko/s

Great test and thanks for posting the results for us here. Curious, lmame, about your abbreviations, Mo and ko?

Oh sorry...
I guess us french do not use the same terms as English...

In fact Mo= Mega Octet and 1 Octet is 8 bits...
I guess so what we call an Octet is actually a Byte...

So Mo is MB and ko is kB

Ah, merci beaucoup!

I didn't read the part under your avatar that says, "Location:France"! Thanks for the info. and the clarification of terms!

They should have called it an octet in English too. It would help with some people being confused since megabit is abbreviated Mb, while megabyte is MB. It can be easy to skip over the case of the letter 'B' sometimes.
