As I have been browsing ths forum, I have noticed alot of repeat questions in multiple threads. So, here are all my answers to these questions.

1. The UX50 and the UX40 are diffrent colors. the UX50 is silver, and the UX40 is a more greyish color.

2. We know. We ALL want a UX

3. You CAN charge from the USB port, But you need to make some modifications. Look here:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25946

4. Stop whining about the UX60!

5. There is no serial connector. You cannot add accesories.

6. There is no Wired remote.

7. There is no A/V remote

8. If you're STILL confused about the memory layout of the UX, look on the Sony Clie website.
I've posted a link:
http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/micros/clie/ux50features/memory.html

9. The new UX is supported by The MissingSync v.3.0.8 for the Mac. You also might want to check out this thread about CLIE and MAC:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24461

10. Yes, the screen is smaller.

11. The screen does not support portrait mode

12. The only diffrence between the UX40 and the UX50 is the UX40 does not have WiFi.

13. Discuss your must have apps here:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58

14. The UX50 will be shipping on or before Sep. 12th

15. The UX40 wil be shipping on or before Sep. 26th

16. You can use your existing power brick that came with your Clie in conjunction with the cradle to charge and power the UX.

17. You can use the car charger in conjunction with the cradle to charge and power the UX

18. The UX uses the PalmOS sound API. It will be compatible with a broader range of mp3 player software.

19. The 29MB of internal storage IS like an internal MemoryStick

20. The resolution of the camera is the same as the NX70 and the Zire71, 310k pixels

21. There is no vibrating alert

22. The screen brightness is good compared to an NR70, but darker than an NX80. Look here
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25474

23. The UX does not come with the Remote Camera software like on the TG, but you can install the app. and the Bluetooth BIP patch from Sony support

24. The processor speed varies from 8Mhz to 123Mhz, depending on the application, to save battery life

25. The UX can handle video sizes: 160x112 (record), 320x240 (playback) at 30 fps (Frames Per Second)

26. It does not automatically backup the memory to a flash ROM

27. When charging the battery for the first time, you must charge it for at least 4 hours, and you CANNOT use it during charging for the first time.

28. If you're concerned about IR keyboards, look at this thread
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21012&highlight=pocketop

29. The UX probably will not be upgradable to OS6

If there are any errors, or you want to add something, feel free to post them, and i'll make corrections or changes to this list.

Thanks to everybody for posting answers to these questions in this forum.

-->Coming soon...The "Hey, I just got my UX!" thread<--

Plenty of people have asked about software compatibility.

Sony said from the beginning that just about every existing application will run fine on the UX series. However, unless they have been specially modified, apps won't be able to close the virtual Graffiti area, which has been moved to the side.

And about portrait and landscape support.

No, the UX series doesn't suport portrait mode, though individual applications might. Otherwise its screen is always in landscape mode.

Only one minor correction.

"20. The camera on the UX is the same resolution an the camera on the NX70/V"

My NR is only 100,000 pixels, where as the NX is 310,000 pixels.

All the rest is cool.

I see all too often that users say that they don't have the time to read all the posts in a thread. But, they sure have the time to repair their Clie, instead??

Hey, I just realized that this rhymes :D

Thanks, James, for the cool link. Yeah, when you put the t68i next to the UX50, it gives you a very good idea of the size of the UX50. That' t68i is a pretty compact little phone. I was just shopping for a cell phone, and, in retrspect, I should have gone with the t68i. I was considering it, but I never thought I'd use the bluetooth and ended up with a "toothless" Motorola T721 instead. Of course, this was all before I was even remotely considering the UX50. Darn! Should have gone with that Sony Ericsson afterall! Oh well....

Can anyone shed light on the battery life? People that have bought one in Japan, Is it good?

lmame
09-01-2003, 01:30 AM
I ran a test I used with the NX70V and the eruware driver to see which from CF or MS Port was consumming the most:
Audio Player playing + full back light + volume at half.
By curiosity I ran the same thing on the UX-50

NX70V battery made 170 minutes with CF
NX70V battery made 140 minutes with MS
UX-50 battery (standard) made 213 minutes
UX-50 with standard AND optional battery made 548 minutes

You can see data and the courbs here. (http://www.palmspirit.com/gros_ux50_4.php3)

Now, it is far better than an NX70V isn't it? :)
But it was for Audio Player, as the UC can change its voltage / frequency depending on the application it will be hard to tell for everything...

wow, nice work, NJL!2016! & also with the help of many others, you guys got everything covered now here. :)

I didn't even know there was a gunmetal version for the UX40, & why is the release date of a lower model versus the UX50 a week later? hum... :)

That's wierd that they release the 50 and the 40 on diffrent dates. Mabye they want to clear out all the 50 orders first, then the 40s

Hey-

Great thread!

One thing I'd like to see covered definitively is compatibility with the various Memory Stick versions. On the SonyStyle site, a footnote says something about higher Memory Stick Pro access speeds aren't realized with the UX series.

I haven't seen anybody refer to this elsewhere...does someone know then what advantage I would get by ordering a pricier Memory Stick Pro instead of the standard sticks?

SPACE!! Normal MS are limited to an addressible size of 128MB, MS Pro are currently available with capacities from 256MB to 1G... with more to come.

The remote camera is a software that enables you to control by bluetooth a BIP camera (Bluetooth camera)...

This is just an update for that software for the UX 50 (version 1.1.3)...

Oh ok :)

When I received the UX I took some nice pics using BIP at my office... I shot a nice office lady, she didn't think I could take photos even if I wasn't behind the FX77 to press the button :p
Well, I didn't tell her after anyway ;)

But it's true for other CLIE (NX, NZ, TG) you had to install the BIP Bluetooth patch to catch the Remote Camera... :)

I don't have access to any comparison pictures, but with the extended Battery, the UX50 really looks like a sandwich. :D

wait, is that slightly thicker than the cradle? the cradle is a nice size..

It seems that some "buzzing" noise comes from the screen, as some PDA?

sonicboy
09-08-2003, 01:59 PM
did you notice it changes tone when you do different things? I think its the CPU... or the screen maybe...

lmame
09-08-2003, 02:35 PM
I don't know, but it seems it comes from a certain part if the screen, not all the screen...

But I guess it is something going with the screen because if you put the UX "on hold" while playing music, you don't have the "buzzz" anymore...

But I guess it is normal... It seems that quite a lot of PDA nowadays do this kind of noise (Ipaq 5550, Last CLIE ...)...

Well it is not a hassle but strange anyway... :)

sonicboy
09-13-2003, 11:33 AM
well I dont know about you but I wouldn't want the battery in my pocket anyway, think its for different purposes, portability is not really one of them

TechStyle
09-13-2003, 12:09 PM
Agreed about the extended battery in the pocket motif! If you're using the Extended battery, it's probably to use lot's of video or surfing without having to charge up. So you'll probably be carrying it in a brief case, fanny pack...

I'm looking at the extended batt. to work in conjunction with the soon to be released Sony Memory Stick Video Recorder (see link).

http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=5917

That's going to be addictive! Lot's of video on the go... just add a cell phone/gprs capability, tv tuner and you'll have "virtually" the perfect on the go device. :D

Well at least we're finally heading on the right track with the UX line. Now we only have to wait a few generations to realize "digital nirvana"!

Oh and one more VERY IMPORTANT thing, out of the box MAC OS X COMPATIBILITY!

ARE YOU LISTENING SONY?

sonicboy
09-13-2003, 12:13 PM
yes, but you already know what digital nirvana is...

one device for everything INCLUDING cash.. I am sick of dirty money man, I want to wave my personal device over a pad and have it bring up a photo of me on the clerks screen.. the device will be wallet, camera, organizer, media player, phone, pager, email and web... EVERYTHING.. and it will come.

TechStyle
09-13-2003, 12:17 PM
Agreed! But after the purchase it should also make a record in your personal financial program (like Pocket Quicken) so that there isn't even another step required by you except to "electronically transmit payment".

Have a Clie Day! :D

NJL!2016

sonicboy
09-14-2003, 10:07 PM
encryption will only become uncrackable if it becomes opensource..

think about how many people want to crack software protection and how many people make that protection, like DVD security, which was suposed to be flawless, eventually fell.

if security is open source, you have about equal amount of users concerned about security with the number of users who want to break it apart.. look at this is already proven effective, linux vs windows ;)

"buy" open source software :D

NJL!2016

I have another question, when the screen is turned off, it it black like on the NZ, or clear like on the SJ22?
