One of the ways to relieve the stress and trauma of Pda Preorder Syndrome, is to read information and see pictures of said Pda in action by actual users. So I'm begging all you that have a UX50, throw us preorders a bone. Pictures, comments, reviews are most appreciated!! There can never be enough! :D

I'm not a pre-order, just an anxious prosepective buyer... and I'd like to see ANYTHING I can get. I would have expected a few more hands-on reviews by now...

First of all, how did you get your hands on one in the US? Second of all, you said it was fast; what applications are you referring to and what other pda are you basing this on? Thanks!

I can answer to second question only the UX50 will find all avaible wireless connections in you limited area by default (this is a software design) be doing this I got on my Linksys 802.11b access point within two mintues -- and surfing the net

I think he was asking about application performance/speed; not how easy it is to get to the Internet with WiFi.

No I was talking how EASY it is to get on a wireless network with the UX50 ------ not the speed:D
MikeD

Okay, so now you're saying how great the wireless is... How did you feel the speed was? ie launching apps. Also, how DID you get to try one in the US?

Did some testing with the UX 50 model -- not to bad compared to the ARM CPU's models -- the clie has a new type of CPU -- I feel the nx series are better for somethings about in general the UX series is better because if it's size and adjustable CPU and battery

Sonicboy, a couple of questions for you.
Have you tried avantgo?
Is there a hesitation when using the jog dial?
Speed of piscel viewer as compared to other clies?
Range of bluetooth and wifi?
Screen brightness and colors as compared to other clies?
Any concrete battery benchmarks?
Thanks!!

Have you tried avantgo?no, I've just been using netfront and my laptop as a webserver to load stuff on..
Is there a hesitation when using the jog dial?depends what app, if you are scrolling in the 3D launcher it is lightning, if you are scrolling a large graphic or text file its slightly slower..
Speed of piscel viewer as compared to other clies?couldn't tell you! it seems very responsive when using the stylus but it does drop res when scrolling.. I have been loading in very large files and it hasn't chocked yet.. I'll try piscel when next in an electronics store with the other models..
Range of bluetooth and wifi?this has more to do with the base station or base source.. if that has a large antenna it will recieve weaker signals.. I get the same distance as my powerbook so there you go, its got very nice range ;)
Screen brightness and colors as compared to other clies?this is a bit of a non-issue, yes its bright enough :D
Any concrete battery benchmarks?Battery is really really good! benchmarks are kind of useless with the new variable engine thing.. it will be up too your personal use, check the sony battery life guide, it will give you an idea..

I NEVER SAID iSYNC and Missing Sync are the same product --- Only thing I stated was that isync is Free and work fine and Missingsync is $ 39.95 -- which would you have to hotsync with a Mac -- Free software or 39.95

isync needs missing sync to sync dude...
sonicboy
08-26-2003, 11:51 PM
and you DEF need missing sync to mount memorysticks from the clie..
I've been using my cybershot as a MS drive which sucks cause my 256 MS pro is hardley used!!!
if it wasn't for the internal MS (for transfering between my 2 MS sticks) I would be pulling my hair out

sonicboy
08-27-2003, 01:05 AM
errr, do you even own a clie?
I'll tell you what, why dont YOU find out about the need for missing sync because I did it all by myself :P

Since you -- think you know something -- there is not a word about Missing Sync in the i Sync Manual -- please check the apple website

Mysing Sync is not an Apple product, it's made by Mark Space.

please check your head..
missing sync provides support for CLIE devices.. like drivers.. isync is just software that tells other software, in this case PALM DESKTOP what to do.
sony doesn't provide a mac version of palm desktop (for clie) so you need to use missing sync to patch the standard version..
Cliepro

I know Missing sync is made by Markspace and i Sync is a Apple product -- BUT you do not need both -- Read the i Sync manual -- if you are using MAC OS X ---

I just checked again to make sure I am not tripping and you (still) need HotSync Manager installed for isync to work, I think you need to read the manual again..

MissingSync is needed to see the Cliés MS. If you figured out a way to do this with out it, I would love to know. :)
My NR and my Macs don't get along, I'm running 10.26 on all my systems. I've tried iSync with absolutely no luck. For the other users that got it working, it was only with the basic features.

You do know that a Clies can run on a Palm Drivers -- since you didn't know -- and since you have ever done this -- you can run the Palm desktop for at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/palmdesktop.html and i Sync ---

I tried PALM's desktop before with no luck, it's still installed on my main Mac. I followed Apples iSync help step by step and no matter what I did, it just would not see my NR.
I'll try it again though, it's been been about 4 months. :)
You are able to see the MS with iSync?

I do not use the memory stick feature with my MAC -- yes i Sync does have issues with the MS but I use i sync to sync with the Mac adress book -------

I wish SONY would just step up to the plate and release some DAM Apple drivers. Grrrr. Why would a company make a PALM device that's not Mac friendly.
I need MS support on my Mac, but I'm waiting to get my UX before buying Missing Sync.

well actually thats NOT what you said, you said that why do we need MISSING SYNC because ISYNC does the same job and its free...
you can use isynk if you want but like I said before, all that program does is tell the palm software (AND MISSING SYNC) what to do..
therfore, we still NEED missing sync and I assume you have it installed (wiether your aware of your dependancy on this software is something else) if isync is working with your clie..
thank you for allerting me that missing sync 3.0.8 is released.. I can now use my UX with my powerbook!

With any luck this will clarify rather than confuse the issue:
iSync works with the standard Palm Hotsync manager. Most (not sure if all) Sony Clie's use slightly different USB/Serial standards than other Palm OS devices. So, I can use the standard Palm/iSync combo with Handspring, Palm devices, etc. but to use Sony devices (even for sync) I usually need Missing Sync to provide drivers. Missing Sync does a bunch of other stuff (notably mount the memory stick) beyond enabling sync as well.
One complication is that you *should* be able to do a bluetooth sync (w/o any of the other features) with just iSync and the Palm Software. I haven't tested that though as my last Sony was way before the bluetooth era. Bluetooth sync on my T|T can be slow, and the extra features in Missing Sync are well worth it in my mind.
