View Full Version : Why I'm not getting the UX50

I have always loved Clie's for their flashy design but I'm not getting the UX50 because of a few reasons and I will get to that later. I've owned many handhelds, I've been jumping back and forth from PPC to Palm. I've owned the T665c, iPaq 3955, iPaq 5455, NX70V, and the iPaq h2215. Every PDA I owned was very nice but I always seemed to get tired of them for some reason. The best PDA I have ever owned was the iPaq 3955 mainly because of the design, screen, and speaker. It's good to have a PDA that you can just keep looking at and have a smile on you're face. Without no doubt the PPC is a better OS for anyone. If anything can replace a notebook it will be a PPC and come on is a PPC really that difficult to use. When I first saw the UX50 I fell in love with it but I had to take a closer look at it. That is exatly the kind of PDA I will get tired of in about 2 months. I think the main reason why is because of the design. Don't get me wrong the design is "cool" but it doesn't fit me, just like the NX70v didn't fit me it was like it was just there. Have you noticed the way cell phones evolved and changed in there design, they first started making them boxed out and then started making them with slight curves to fit you really well (T68, V60..). I'm really thinking about going back to my first love, the iPaq 3955. But please don't let what I'm saying stop you. I use mine for every day life, not business.
What makes you get tired of a PDA?

Just take a good look at the applications for the PPC. They all are real indepth even the games have real sound and better graphics. Palm OS apps are plenty full but mostly not worth paying for. In handango the top selling software under Palm is a software to make the interface look better, tell me, why is that.

I don't get ILuvMyPDA's logic here...first, you "fell in love" with the UX, then you "took a closer look at it" and decided you didn't like it. Are you in Japan? If not, how were you able to make a formal opinion without having touched the device? And for that matter, why did you suddenly fall out of love with it?
No PDA will replace a laptop as long as they are using two different operating systems, and ya can't touch type on a device the size of a stack of cards.
If you just get "tired" of PDAs and buy new ones, then you're gonna have a very expensive hobby! I don't get tired of them, I just find that a new PDA has more features that I desire and buy it. I don't fall into the "latest and greatest" trap.

This is why I don't get a UX: It's prolly not available untill Santa falls down the chimney here in Holland... I don't want to wait so long.

Please don't think I am trying to insight any flame war, just would like your opinions. I am a long time Palm OS user, as well as Clie user first with the N710, then T615. I still use my T615 at work because of it's great compact size allows me to keep it in my shirt pocket.
I recently decided to try the Toshiba E755 PPC because of numerous positive reviews rating it as "The" PPC, and it's integrated wireless, as well as to see the difference in OS. My main purpose of integrated wireless was the ability to check email, or look up something quickly on the web when not on my computer.
Things I haven't liked about my trial with the Toshiba are:
1. The screen appears to have much lower resolution. I am not sure what it is, but it reminds me of my original Palms.
2. Like most PPC this thing is big, and there is no way I can walk around with it in my scrub-top shirt without looking like I am carrying around a big calculator.
3. Have to use a really lousy sleeve type case if you want to protect it.
4. Accessing the web has been problematic taking the unit about 30 seconds sometimes to see the 802.11 network, sometimes locking up and requiring numerous frustrating resets, and web pages are difficult to read in the vertical layout.
When I saw the write-ups of the UX-50 I was hoping to have the best of all worlds and sell my Toshiba. Does anyone think that the UX-50 would fit in a shirt pocket. Has anyone seen anything about the ease of wireless networking and viewing web pages on the unit with the Japanese version? Any insight would be appreciated.

rpitz,
How heavy is your toshiba? The UX is slightly over 6 oz. I, too, wear scrubs throughout the day, and my TG50 (which is about 6.5 oz) goes into the back pants pocket. I think 6 oz is on the verge of being too heavy for scrubs shirt's front pocket, but I guess to each his own. Besides, I would bend over and the thing would fall out and break. Not good for a $700 toy. :D

Given "iluvmypda's" grammar and spelling, I think LOGIC has very little to do with his arguments.
As keithsimmons said, don't feed the troll.

I don't care if you want one or not. I can also give reasons why I won't buy certian automobiles. To each their own, I say... :D
