View Full Version : NX gets too much attention

When I first got my NX70 I wanted everyone to see it. I would pull it out and use it everywhere possible even when I didn't want to use it.:p I just loved the attention. Now I'm sick of it! Every time I use by NX I get the same remarks... wow Thats cool...what can it do...what is that...how much did that cost... they are always the same stupid questions. I sometimes find myself reluctant to use it, ok not really but it is annoying. Many of you can probably relate. Do any of you get similar responses, and do they bug you like they do me?

All the time. At work its not so much anymore because I see the same people, but at University people from the next table or desk or whatever always lean over and ask questions. Really annoys me too.

I tell people I can control the world with it. And I turn off the nearest TV in front of them and their jaws just drop. Dumb primates.

people are dumb when they see something new like the clie......they have the wierdest reactions....wow what can that do.... is that a phone and then i answer "yes its the all new phone that attracts the dumbest people and program them to ask the dumbest question." they all need to chill out and get familiar with modern technology.

I get that all the time too.
Even with my friends I rarely get to use it. They always take it from me to play Bejeweled or TextTwist...sigh

It baffles me just how many people really don't know what a PDA is, what they look like, what they do, etc. I had to pull out my Clie at Pei Wei today and someone saw it in it's open layout and said "Wow, that's a big phone".

Lol, funny thread here. I get the same things all the time but I love the idea of saying it's a moron magnet! I find that the most frequently asked question is "How much did it cost?" and "Can you go online with it?"

go to bestbuy at tv section and turn them off ..
Muwahahahaha
Drives me crazy, too. That's why I wish there were a tablet-style PDA with the advanced features of the NR/NX lines. The whole flipping-open motion, no matter how fast you try to get it over with, always draws too much attention. Of course I could leave it in tablet mode and get a case for it, but then people would say, "Is that a cinderblock?" And forget about EVER using it in clamshell mode.
There are so many times when I need information out of it and don't take it out because of the reaction. When I owned more subtle PDAs I never used to hesitate to use them.

The only thing that really gets me is that people seem to forget that asking how much someone payed for something is not the most polite thing to ask.
I walk around the Mall with it up to my ear like a phone. You talk about funny looks!

People always tease me that they wish they had my money. What they don't realize, is that my priorites are different from theirs!

I get too much attention from my PDA as well.
"Cool, does it have the internet?"
"How much did that cost?"
What I hate the most though is when I'm just trying to add a simple appointment to my Date Book which should only take a minute or two and people ask me:
"That's a nice looking toy. Can I see it?"
I really don't want to give it to them, especially if they're not even a good friend... And I hate having to say no with such a serious monotonous voice, because then I sound like I hate them, but saying no in a laughing voice sounds too passive. I haven't gotten down that perfect "No." yet ; ). So while we're on the subject, does anyone have any good all-around excuses to use so you don't have to let other people mess with your PDA? Hehehe... =P My best one is:
"Sorry, but I have personal information on here. I can't let you see it."
It's not lying either, because it's true = ). But of course, you always get some inconsiderate people who may say something like:
"That's okay, I don't want to look at that stuff. I just want to play some games or something."
Although, I would probably say something I would consider stupid as well ( but wouldn't ask to see it : P ) had I not known anything about PDAs... So I guess I can understand how they feel : ).

n2ifp, you are absolutely right! They are always telling me that i am so rich, that i can afford to buy gadget after gadget. And yet they somehow always have the money to buy accessory after accessory for their cars. It's amazing how they can come up with such incredible deductions.
The other day I had a discussion with my group about our current project at university. And as we finished one of the guys in the group pulled out a Toshiba Pocket PC to make a note about our next appointment. Normally I wouldn't do it, but my pride got the better of me (after all, what kind of Palm user would want to be upstaged by a Pocket PC), and so I pulled out the NX and the reaction was instantaneous. He said it was a cool PDA. Too bad there weren't any girls around then.

Same here. The NX70V is such an attractive thing to observers. I used to do a little demo and tell them about the cool things it can do. Now I just try to shrug it off. I either try to conceal what I'm doing so I don't have to deal with all the questions or I change the conversation as quick as possible.
I do feel a bit restricted. I sometimes think if I take it out I'll have to deal with questions so I leave it in my belt case. I wish I could use it without all the attention.
On the other hand they are all entitled to their curiosity. After all the NX70V, in my opinion, is the best PDA on the market (sorry UX owners).

I used to get some looks and some curious spectators when I would use my 1910. But not very often. I imagine that I'll get quite a few more with my NX80.
I think the main thing is that most people call PDA's "Palm Pilots". Not that it isn't fair -- Palm really kicked it all into high gear. But PDA's today are so much more than what people associate with a "Palm Pilot". My NX80 has more in common, IMHO, with my Laptop than it does with a monochrome Palm Pilot.
I mostly blame marketing. PDA's are becoming a little more common in society -- you'll see some PDA's used in product placement type advertising in commercials, TV shows, and movies. But very rarely, if ever, do they really show a PDA being used the way it's really used or doing what they can really do. You'll see some guy pull out some iPAQ looking device and start poking at it in a commercial for cargo pants. But you really don't know anything about it other than the fact that it's silver. You'll see Sydney Bristow use some PDA or another to hack into some computer and beam the data half-way across the world in the show Alias. Or you'll see Ben Aflec use a well outdated and pretty large Casiopea Palm Sized PC text someone online in Sum of All Fears.
But what does any of that tell the general public about PDA's? That you need to be a secret agent with cargo pants to find PDA's usefull? For the most part.
For a lot of people, it's like being one of the early adopters of the cell phone. To see someone walking around talking into a phone with no cords ... WTF was that? That got quite a few looks then. And it was probably not much fun for the user to have to hear the same questions all the time. Now people know what a cell phone is. I think they all have one. Or two. So no one really ever gives any looks or really asks about your cell phone. The same thing will come to pass with PDA's. Once people realize just what they are and what they do. Until then, you really have 2 choices -- be the one to Educate them until it's public knowledge. Or be an *** and ignore them.

i get asked questions about my pda at uni, and i'm usually patient enough to show em what it does, and i'm really happy with what my little "baby" can do.
And now i've managed to convert a couple of people to go and get one of their own......
and i can't imagine my life without it anywmore.

Perhaps a variation on a theme re: a set of "business cards" I did for my S.O.
Background:
She is an attorney, yet is constantly told when she goes to the attorneys only window or the attorney seating area "This is for attorneys only". So I made a bunch of cards for her that just say, in elegant script, "No S**t, Sherlock".
So:
Perhaps a few cards in the NX case that have what it is, where they can get more information, and maybe a summary of features. Maybe a "please use this information in lieu of personal interaction".
Something like (I bet I could fit this on a business card, especially if I use both sides):
Many people want information on my PDA.
Please use this information in lieu of conversation.

BTW I really really hate it when people call my NR a palm pilot. It's a SONY!!!!!!!!!!! I paid for the device so people realize that it's a Sony, not "just your ordinary palm pilot" lol
i had someone call mine a pocket pc before
haha
anyways it's a doubled edged sword
u cant have the good without the bad

Well, my NX gets absolutely ZERO attention here in Portland. Either everyone here is incredibly tech savvy, or else I am just emitting a repulsive aura that somehow cancels out the attraction of the NX80!

It all falls onto advertising. These companies simply aren't smart enough to make commercials, which makes people dumb about these tech toys!

What I usually do when I don't want someone running wild through my Clie is I offer to show them stuff, but I get to hold it. Usually they ask "so this is like a Palm Pilot that does extra stuff?" And so I usually show them the special features besides the PIM functions. I think by now most people have seen the Datebook and addresses and that kind of thing. Although just today somebody was giving me his number, and was looking over my shoulder and said "that's really cool." I actually barely know the guy, but he's sort of tangentally connected to my show, and I already had him in my address book with his cell phone and e-mail, which probably freaked him out a little:D. He might have believed soulreaver99's line about running the world with it!
Occasionally if a fellow Palm user asks to see it, I feel like I should let them use it because they have a fundamental understanding of how it works and how to treat it. It always makes me nervous, and I stay right next to them. The one time I didn't mind was when one coworker asked to see it, and then pulled out his T|T. I didn't know anyone who owned one, and had never played with one except for a few seconds at the store, so I was just as eager to use his and ask questions about it. But rarely is it any more than just a hassle when someone wants to see it.

Yesss I like this tread, so cool...
My experience with my NX80 has some differences.
I live in Vietnam from 1993.
Here, it is not really a paradise of technologies.
The Vietnamese people don’t understand every new technology and not really ask “what is this machine”
At this day, foreign people (black or white) are a big curiosities and mysterious!
(Of Course, In the last 10 years I see some progress!!)
Yessss I like my remote control because in every bars, coffee shops or restaurants we have a howling TV with so big volume, and with my NX80 I can drink with normal TV level.
I Like the Camera, because I can make pictures of my family in every prohibited place. Ha ha!
A last point, I work for an organization help women and children, victims of sex slave, I make investigations with my Incognito NX. (Just problems in badly enlightened places with the camera poor brightness)
At this day, outside my office, I use my NX like a notebook (with 80 different software inside).
I just regret NX80 don’t make coffee!!
Bye

Yup, NX just about does everything. That's why I say it can control the world. People always freak out when I show them that it can record video.

Where are you finding these people? Nobody ever asks me about my clie.
So I guess I can tell you the secret of having people leave you alone.
1. Don't talk unless absolutely necessary
2. Never make eye-contact if you see someone is interested.
3. Pretend you don't hear them the first time, works wonders.

My biggest gripe is with people call these things "Palm Pilots". I was walking to lunch on campus the other day, and there was a table setup. Fill out a servey and win a "Palm Pilot". I was thinking... "Hot damn... someone saved a Pilot and they are giving it away! What a relic!" It was actually a M130... not a Pilot.
What will it take it get people to realize that the Pilot was put out of production years ago? No one has ever called my 200SX a Model T.

Perhaps you should build a large box around yourself to prevent anyone else from seeing the device in action.
Tocache: I had no idea there was a city in Peru named Trujillo. Why would there be a city named after him (in peru, no less)?
Tocache
08-24-2003, 12:40 AM
? Trujillo is located 550Km north of Lima (the capital)
You should look to a map if you wanna find it :D
