I haven't visited ClieSource in ages, but am now thinking about getting my husband a new NX80 to replace his aging TRGPro. I have been happily using an NX60 for a year or so, but probably will drool over the NX80 if I buy one.

I'm also finally ready to invest in a CF driver to increase the storage space on my NX60. I read a ton of threads in several of the forums, including this one, but it looks like Sony has released a CF driver of their own? Is this correct? If so, how well does it work? Any comparisons between it and Euroware's driver? What about Pelaca's driver? Also, where can I buy the Sony driver, if one is available?

Thanks for any help. Last time I visited here the NZ was just released...yikes! Lots of changes since then.

wombat88, the Sony CF driver comes loaded on the NX73 and the NX80 and is doesn't work and is not available for other models.

The Sony cf driver is also limited or crippled to the point that it will not support Sony's multimedia apps, but a solution to get this function to work came along in the form of Mini's patch located here:

Mini's materials room

And thread about it here:

By the way, I love my NX80.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, stronggeek. So I guess the two options for my NX60 would be Pelaca's driver or Euroware's. I read a bunch of threads in the CF forum, but was concerned about some of the statements made there about the driver's stability and lack of presence by the developers. I will direct my husband to mini's patch for the NX80, but would appreciate hearing comments about the options for my NX60 as far as a CF driver goes. I wouldn't be watching movies, but would like to use the CF slot to store files, programs (could they be run from CF though?), and MP3s.

I wish that Sony wouldn't have crippled the driver. If they could get away from MS only, allow CF to be fully used, and establish support for Audible audiobooks, I'd buy that unit in a heartbeat. Oh, and something that allows you to view in landscape or portrait mode would be nice...

Yes, apps can be run from the CF. The issue is NOT with the drivers, but Sony's mulyi-media apps not being multi-card aware. By trying to trick the apps with some tom foolery, it can lead to instability. Third party apps generally haven't been a problem.

EruWare could not legally hack Sony's apps to make them work.

For the NX80 there's Mini's Patch for NX80 (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20155)

For the NX60/70 you might also want to check out the following. It's what I'm personally using on my NX70. :p

One other option for your NX60 is to use Pelaca's CF driver package and install the hacked driver along with the Data Import (replaces the NX 60/70 MS import - but you'll have to uninstall the Sony USB drivers and re-nstall to get the PC to see the CF card in your Clie)

Then you could install the Audioplayer and Movieplayer files from the new UX. These apps are multi-card aware and allow you to choose between CF and MS without a lot of program swapping and card swapping like the other methods. Just be aware that the menus are in Japanese right now (but not really a big problem)

Interesting, what I found with my NX80 is that MS Export worked just fine with Data Import on the Clie. After I removed and installed Data Export sometime later on, then I realized they were essentially the same, with the main difference being Data Import on the Clie and a new name for MS Export.

Hey Larry, I haven't even opened my NX80 CD yet.

Sounds like I'm not missing anything though.

Or am I?

Thanks

And Edit: To Wendy, if you're still around. :)

Can you tell us what cinfiguration/product you chose?

Atleast you're savvy enough to do your homework so you're able to make an informed decision.

Hi Paul,

No, not really, some of the Sony apps did have minor revisions though, but nothing to write home about.:) I did eventually update everything, only so I had the latest. Some apps like QuickTime are already the latest, but not from the CD. The rest of the Sony desktop PC apps, I seldom or if ever use anyway.;)

Or am I?

Thanks

For my husband, I decided to get him the NX80. It sounds like Mini's patch is the way to go on that -- I appreciate the info! :) For myself, I'm still undecided, but probably will go with the Eruware driver. The hacked drivers sound interesting, but I'm up to my eyeballs in work these days and don't have much free time to do the many hours of tweaking it would require.

Maybe one of these days Sony will stop being so paranoid about proprietary matters and its danged memory sticks... yeah, right.

Wombat,

The Eruware drivers were great for finally getting to the CF slot and I used them exclusively for quite a while but I finally switched to the hacked Sony Driver because I was constantly popping memsticks in/out and doing soft resets to get the right order of "volume mounts".

Bottom line:
If you download Pelaca's driver 1.07 and also download the audioplayer and Movieplayer files that he has available (from the UX50) the install is quite simple and the apps work with both MS and CF with no hassles in popping cards in and out.

...just a thought.

This is a brand new option and I agree 100%!

These files are Sweet!

And like srodsimpson mentioned, they are hassle free.

Really? Wow... okay, glad I didn't do anything yet. I appreciate the info! Off to check Pelaca's threads. :)
