Anyone know of a good backup utility for my NX70V?
Also, what about your thoughts on the built-in MS Backup? Do I NEED to replace it or is it good enough? Am I missing anything some other progam offers?
Thanks.

All I use is MS Backup. I always keep three rolling copies on two memory sticks. Additionally, I keep three rolling complete backup copies of the memory stick on my hard drive. Do NOT rely on the Palm Desktop backup. It can easily be contaminated by the Clie when you HotSync!
MS Backup is the only reliable backup app that I currently would consider reliable, others may disagree. Ultimately, it's your time and it's your Clie.
It's not a question of if, but when, will the Clie crash.
There are an additonal 140 threads with backup in them.

Personally I think the MS Backup program is a good one, and free...
BUT it is missing a schedule feature...
I miss BB where you can schedule backups at lets say 2300 every night, or every
other night.
I have been trying Backup Man.
It costs $10.00 which is not bad...
But again the only feature it has over MSBackup is the ability to backup via a set
schedule, which for me is good since I seem to always forget to back my unit up and
pay for it later...

After using backup utilites for my Clie for almost three years and having gone through many hard resets and system restores, I noticed backing up to the Memory Stick never really backed everything up. And I mean everything. I've tried all of the apps. The only sure fire solution I found was BackupBuddy for the Desktop. Haven't had a problem at all with it. Even BackupBuddyVFS for the memory stick wasn't all that great.

I use Botzam Backup, and have never found anything that it hasn't restored. I've done quite a few hard resets while testing things out. It backs up to the memory stick. Lots of features. Would recommend it. THere are quite a few options out there, so try them out. My two cents.

I never heard of Botzam Backup. I'll definitely try that out then. Thanks.

I would recommend Backupman. I had been using PIBackup and it kept corrupting the backup and then I would have to format the MS.

i just installed backupman and yeah i would highly recommend it! real nice, simple, schedulable (is that a word?). thanks for the recommendation....
If you have confidential info in your RAM (that are worth much more than the Clie itself) and do backup to MS, that sits in your Clie most of the time, just be aware that an un-authorized person can get access to your RAM easily through the MSBackup. All he needs to do is to hard reset and restore the RAM with MSBackup. Your password is useless in this case since he bypasses The System Lockout screen with the hard reset.
Backup Buddy VFS is the only backup app, that I'm aware of, that will encryp the backup files. It will ask for password when you want to restore your RAM. Unfortunately it does not support Palm OS 5 just yet.
One simple solution is to use an MS that is strickly used for backup. Keep that MS separate from the Clie most of the time. Unfortunately this defeats the schedule backup option.
If that is not a desire solution and your confidential information are mainly just passwords, account numbers, etc., you can store those info in another security app like Yaps (freeware), Splash ID, etc., that will ask you to enter password to get access to it. I use Yaps.
You can make him more difficult to get to your RAM by removing the MSBackup from ROM and put it in RAM and hide a copy of it in the MS somewhere that only you know how to get it with a file manager like FileZ. I would also delete, or at least move, MSGate or CLIE Files? (or whatever the Palm OS 5 version of MSGate) from ROM to RAM and put a copy of FileZ in MS. So when he hard resets your Clie, there won't be any MSbackup, nor file manager, shown on the main screen to do a restore. It will make yourself do more steps to restore your RAM from MS, but that is a price to pay for additional peace of mind.
