From the pics -- it is just flat. So that the UX and/or battery packs can sit on it.

Actually the "Cradle" is just for power / recharging. The UX has a mini USB on the left side for HotSync. You could also HotSync via WiFi or Bluetooth. Check out the Hong Kong Sony site: http://www.clie-online.sony.net/prod_info/peg-ux50/index.html for more info. :)

It's just a pan for the UX to sit in. HotSync via wireless!
You can stack the batteries like pancakes, syrup with that?

Can't stack batteries continuously. The battery attaches itself to the clie by "locking" on. However, they don't latch onto each other, so they can't be stacked.
Seems very un-Japanese as they always have those cartoons where many small parts all fit together to form some humongous alien slaying robot.

Yes, I know, I was just being silly, although if Sony wanted to, it could do it. It would need a heftier power supply though...

Is the battery of the UX hard wired in like the NX and NR series or can it be changed out like the NZ series??

you can take it out quite easily with a phillips head screwdriver.. but dont because
A: its annoying
B: sony want you to buy the external battery pack
in all seriousness mate, the battery life on this clie is AB-FAB if you know what I mean...
