View Full Version : Will the UX50 be upgradeable to OS 6?
Subject says it all. Is the UX50 flash upgradeable to Palm OS 6 when it comes out? If what I have read is true, OS 6 will be as drastic a change as Mac OS 9 -> X.

Don't hold your breath. As major a change as OS 6 is rumored to be. I don't see how Sony would even consider Upgrading as a possiblity. I see the first OS 6 model as an all new Clie. Not an upgrade.

sadly I would have to agree.
The last time sony did offer an upgrade from os3.5.2 (or whatever) to os 4.1 they charged $50 and a one week turnaround.
Doesn't look like they are upgrading the NX or TG series to OS5.2 either.
Most likely sony just wants us to buy their new OS6 UX60.... I know I will.

I got this from:
http://www.brighthand.com/article/RumorMill_PalmOS6_Coming_in_October
SONY is EVIL, so my guess is no like the other posts.
"Many users of Palm OS 5 devices are asking whether they will be upgrade to OS 6. Palm's Tungsten T and C and Sony's NX series have flash ROM, which means that they potentially could be upgraded, but neither Palm nor Sony has committed to this. Michael Mace, PalmSource's Chief Competitive Officer, weighed in on this issue by saying, "We're designing Palm OS 6 to be upgradable onto Palm OS 5 hardware. In other words, we're looking at the footprint of products like the Palm Tungsten T and we intend to work within those constraints. But responsibility for delivering the upgrade belongs to the hardware manufacturer. Because our licensees tweak the OS for their hardware, we can't just release a blanket upgrade the way you would for a PC. It's up to the licensees to decide if they want to offer an upgrade, so you need to ask them what their plans are."
My UX will be better then all other PDAs on the market, because it will be mine. :)

I highly doubt it. CLIE's product cycle is changing rapidly so there's no point (in Sony's perspective) to provide an upgrade program... their only focus is on R&D.

Maybe not.
If Sony do that, that means we can control the ROM for upgrade, perhaps through a certain S/W, And that means Japanese OS machine with OS5 could be changed to an English OS machine.
It's an important point for Korean user cause we can run Diopen (Diopen doesn't run on Japanese OS) instead of CJKOS, and Japanese OS clie is cheapper than the English clie...:)

why do u care for OS6? Sony is already bundling more applications than OS6 will have. Like Decuma.
OS is just the core and all its needs to be is stable. More imp are applications. Like SJ33 with OS4 already had excellent mp3 player, while T|T with OS5 had none.

With the cost of this unit being so high - I would think that an upgrade path for the OS would be needed... perhaps to even justify the purchase with OS 6 just over the horizon...

Why OS-6 let me count the ways.....
1) If all rumors hold true. OS-6 will be the first Palm OS to allow Native ARM code. Now for current Palm apps this would mean nothing. But future apps could be mind blowing considering the Speed and abilities of the ARM processor.
2) Again if rumors are true. OS-6 will Allow True Multi-tasking of applications.
3) No 16 MB ram limit. (Yes I know 5.2 found a way) Can you imagine Clies with 128, 256 or more of RAM.
4) Allow for native networking connectivity. (Wi-fi, GSM and Bluetooth api's built into the OS)
5) A new and even more intuitive Launcher.
If I'm dishing out another $500+ bucks. I want THE BEST!!!! :D

I don't quite get all the concern about OS6 because it has not had very much info out yet thats solid, lot of speculation and it will be awhile still until it's released on handhelds.

i see the battery dying in 2 yrs to be bigger problem, with Sony selling no replacements and model not being as popular as iPod to find third party solutions.
OS 6 will add features but things like multi-tasking aren't need with Palm. It anyway switches apps instantly and resumes where you left them. I won't enjoy closing each app manually (PPC style) or running out memory (Symbian).

I think your all on drugs !!!!
Of course Sony will supply a upgrade for our beloved Clie's. They have before havent they?
I mean they hold the consumer in very high regard and bend over backwards to help us. Look at the amount of times people have approached them with their Clie related issues. How many times have they responded in a fair and honest manner.
You dont get that from many other major manufacturers apart from Microsoft, another well reputable manufactuer of fine software.
Stop calling Sony, the bad guys. They provide us with everything we want. Just wait and see. We will get that upgrade to O.S. 6.
On one condition...........

I don't believe that Clii with 128, 256, or more RAM will be in the market in the foreseeable future. Who would buy MemorySticks then? :-)

Some just have to have the latest toys. Well, if that's the case, then just wait till an OS6 device comes out. It's not as though Palms/Clies and the like are essential for life. It's not as though you'll die without them. It's all very simple.
If you want all the features in OS6, then wait and buy a device equipped with it.
If the features and supposed added "benefits" don't really mean that much, then don't worry about it.
And mostly, if you don't like Sony, then here's a HUGE clue---don't buy their products and you won't need to ***** about it.
So then here's a question. What are the big things that will make the UX better with OS 6 over 5.2? I never owned a Palm OS device, so I have no basis at all.
