My wife loves her new clie, but she never uses her 128mb memory stick, which I purchased along with the SJ30 for her christmas present.
We're pretty new at this, so could someone help us a bit?
First, is it a good idea to go ahead and have it in there, sort of like having extra ram in your computer?
Second, is it as simple as just sticking it in, or are there certain steps to follow?
If so, what are they?
Puzzled in Pennsylvania,

Don't worry. If you've never used it you probably don't need it.
Just drop it in the post for me. I'll take care of it!

I also have an SJ30.
In my opionion the most important reason to have a memory stick is the ability to backup all your files and settings on your Clie. SEE MS Backup
I have 2-64 MB memory sticks and I use one to backup my system and the other to hold my favorite photos.
If your memory gets low on the Clie you can also transfer files or programs that are not frequntly used to the memory stick. SEE MS Gate
I leave my memory stick in Clie most of the time although I am not sure that this is correct.
Good Luck!:)

Follow the arrows to insert. Simple!

Is it good, then, to just leave it in all the time?
Is it useful, though, to do so, as in extra RAM?

I would say Yes to both. I have a 128MB MS, now it has half of the free space left.

I don't believe it functions like Ram memory. In other word it will not make your Clie operated faster. It will enable you to carry around more data. You can just leave it in all the time and access things like your favorite photos and by all means back up your info.

It won't hurt to leave it in all the time. It doesn't, however, function as extra RAM would on your desktop machine. It works more like a larger hard drive would. You can use it to store larger files and those you use less often. For the most part, stuff won't just 'end up' on the Memory Stick......you have to PUT it there.

At least for now, I've found that I have enough memory on my Clie that I don't need to run any applications off of my MS. It's great for my pictures and maps, though.

This sounds interesting, but compatability may be a factor.
I have an Apple computer, a G4 powermac to be precise.

They also have a product called BackupBuddy (http://www.bluenomad.com/bb/prod_backupbuddy_download.html) that backs up to your desktop, and it is available in both Windows and Mac versions.
There are a lot of usefull stuff that can be put in MS, like dictionaries, books, MP3s, maps, games, apps, movies, photos, data, and most importantly RAM backup, as already mentioned. For example, some of memory hogging stuff in my MSs are MP3 (256 MB), dictionaries (26MB), maps (20MB), movies (12MB), books (7MB), RAM backup (5MB).
I think having MP3 in Clie is really made my day, especially being able to listen to MP3 in the background while entering data or playing games. If you are into music, that's something to consider adding to your Clie, then you'll fill up your MS with MP3s in a hurry.
RAM is important for speed. So if you're running low in RAM, just move apps that don't need speed (or rarely use apps, but want to keep in Clie) to MS in Palm/Launcher directory.
MSImport is my best buddy when it comes down to moving data between MS and PC. I can see all of the MS folder in PC and I can manipulate them just like I do on the files in PC (drag, drop, delete, etc.). Unfortunately I don't know how the MSImport works with Mac.

Would it be better to have 2 64's or 1 128?
Here's a question that I just got from reading this thread. If I format my MS with the clie, can I add mp3's to the card using a card reader, directly from the PC? I had assumed you could. But does anyone have experience with doing it?

i prefer 2 64's. If one of them went bad, still left with another one. But it'll be a little bit expensive compared to buying 1 128.

I personally like using msimport, when I use a MS card reader I have to insert/eject the MS a few times before my palm pilot "likes" it again.
Personally I find a MS reader cool to take with you to places so that you can share files with other computers that don't have a hotsync cradle.
