View Full Version : NX80 - why no bluetooth (old news, just need to vent !)

My NR70V is starting to play up (after being in use every day for about 14 months now) and I was looking around for a replacement that scores high on all the points I'm after....
- robust
- hires/large format screen
- reaonsonable onboard RAM
- memorystick (would like Pro, but there ya go)
- 1.3mp camera (or better)
- PalmOS5
- Optional WiFi coz it might be nice (have a WiFi setup at home)
- Bluetooth a must (to sync with my Powerbook and connect to my T610)

until I got the the last bullet on the list, the NX80 was rocking. Sure I could put in a BT MS but... as most of the data I want to share is on the other stick I'm stuffed !

Given the NZ90 has BT and it's only going to cost a few bucks... why isn't it there ! Okay, so the fact they have to use that awfaul expanding stylus indicates that the machine is pretty cramped inside, but I'd happily sacrafic the folding cargo-bay contraption for internal BT (or if I could run a BT device in the CF slot when it was shut I'd be happy)

Oh well.... guess I'll have to wait and look at the UX40/50 or pray for an NX81 !

releasing the NX80 without Bluetooth is the dumbest act Sony have ever done...

Those specs are very similar to my NX73v ! Of course you have to be in Europe to get the built-in BT !! Wow this is the very first time I have ever seen that European customers has any sort of advantage over US customers for the same product ! :-)

I am a 802.11b WiFi man myself, I have no interest in Bluetooth. BT is much more popular over in Europe than in the US ;)

Agreed with n2ifp. I personally think that WiFi and Bluetooth should both be used for totally different things. WiFi is great for wireless hi-speed internet access, whereas Bluetooth is only good for an IR replacement, or some other short range frequency. It will eventually catch on in the US. I'd like to see it implemented in garage door openers myself :)

They are 2 completely different things and having built-in BT sure beats the price of a $200+ MS BT card which also hogs the slot. Having built-in wifi would be great -up to the last minute before taking out my credit card I was still plaing with a Tungsten-C - but the current config of the European NX73v seemes to be the best option right now. Anyway, if I want to use wifi I use my PowerBook :-)

WiFi is great.... but I'd not use it anywhere near as much as BT. BT allows me to connect to my PowerBook or PC to hotsync etc, but WiFi isn't much use for anything but surfing the web and syncing email... on (what's for me) the least sensible platform for doing it.
BT in a Clie that talks to my TV, DVD Player, garage door and cellphone.... <homer>drool !</homer>

"but WiFi isn't much use for anything but surfing the web and syncing email... "

exactly... maybe WiFi is more appealing to those who are more net addicted ;).

This is indeed unique... but then again we don't have the NX80 and there is still no word about the UX series. The UX will probably come eventually, but I still wonder why there is so much time between releases of the same models in US and Europe. I don't think this has to do with the multilingual ROM.

What do you guys think?

both have their place, and I'd like both, but... BT for me is required and WiFi is a nice to have. Of course, if they could get both internally....

that's what the UX got me. :)

i will prefer the NX though if it got both BT and Wifi built-in also. :D

Hey Cykalan.... you got a UX... very cool... hence the pic.
The NX would, I suspect, be better for me, though I like the idea of the landscape mode not sure how some of the apps I know and love would work (heck, don't know if they'll work on PalmOS5 anyway !)

zzarg, nono, i don't got one yet. i am planning to get one though. waiting for my first salary...! :D

many of the popular apps actually support widescreen already...! so probably you don't need to worry about it...! :)

sony wont give us all the packgage that easy, thats a shame but is how business work. u r problem might be solve only in the nx has a bigger rom. anyway i liked the fact that i can USe CF and did not have to sacrify the wifi.

Hey JwY - it looks like there is a new PcitureBook style model (C1xx) coming out (Centrino spec with a small screen)... might be best of both worlds (but again, no bl@@dy BlueTooth, just WiFi - b not g)
I use a C1MT PictureBook with WinXP Pro and it's great... small enough to literally stick in a (big) jacket pocket and witha bluetooth dongle and GPRS phone I can still provide coverage when on call.
Of course, if the NX80 had BlueTooth I could use the cellphone and a VNC connection to do the same thing in an even smaller package, but I suspect the landscape screen of the UXs will be better for that
