View Full Version : NR 70 vs NX equivalent model

Before I buy a NR 70 (there are some still around new) I thought I should ask if there are advantages that I don't know about in the equivalent NX model (would that be the Nx60?). I know about:
OS 4 VS OS 5
(I'd rather have OS 4 since I depend on hacks).
NR70 is slightly lighter (7 vs 8 oz)
NR70 is cheaper (about $400 new)
So what am I missing? any of the problems/idiosyncrasies of the NR70 better/fixed on the NX model?
Thanks for your time.

I'm a heavy user of the back button from my N-series days, so the back button on the NR was a major disappointment since it was too stiff to use very effectively. This has been fixed on the NX.
Other improvements:
Apps - all default PIM apps can now use high-res+, plus AudioPlayer, ClieMail, ClieFiles (replacement for MSGate, now based on McFile), and PhotoEditor (replacement for CliePaint) are all high-res+.
Voice Recorder - This is very handy if you have a need for something like this. You don't even have to turn the device on or flip the screen. Just hit the Capture button, start talking into the microphone, and hit the Capture button again when you're done recording.
Speed - Everything is much faster, from running apps to Hotsyncing to pic viewing.
Feel - This is hard to describe, but when you lay the screen half down into the keyboard half in either configuration, it feels almost as if it snaps in on the NX. The NR was not like this, and sometimes the screen would rest a mm or two above the bottom. Maybe this will change with use, but I don't remember the NR ever feeling like that. I also think the rough feel of the outside is easier to hold on to than the smooth NR.
As for hacks, I really was dreading OS5 for the same reason, but I haven't missed any of them. Tealmaster works with some hacks on OS5, but I don't even use that. There are stand-alone apps that handle some of these functions. For example, McPhling is a stand-alone app on OS5, and OKey is similar to PageDownHack for the NR, though it has more features. Also, there's no need for a volume hack, as you can just click on the Sound icon on the status bar, and up pops a window where you can change any of the volume settings or do a system-wide mute. Very handy!!
To be honest, I don't notice a weight difference between the two, nor do I notice a size difference until I slip it in my pocket, where the CF tumor is noticeable.
I don't want to rip too hard on the NR, as it is a great device; #2 in my book and much closer to #1 than to #3. But I do feel the NX is better; whether it's worth the price difference is up to you.

I noticed that NR70 has some problem on its MS slot, after using for a long time, it cannot read the MS anymore, it is a hardware problem

Very similar to a thread yesterday, though you seem to definitely be leaning on way on this. Both are excellent PDAs, you can't go wrong with either. As for the memory stick issue, yes it does/did exist, I'm not sure if it was fixed in the later models but it can be fixed by Sony under warranty or DIY. Do a quick search on "the paper trick" for detailed info on the problem and the DIY fix. Below is the thread with a pretty good analysis between the two units.

If you search online, you could probably get an NR close to $300....

Thanks, but I'm trying to avoid refurbished ones. Not sure I trust them, and the one in the ad you mention is not even returnable if it is DOA.

It's not refurb, just on clearance, it's still covered under warranty or you could pick up the replacement.
